The Rams haven t played since Dec. 12, when they had a three-game winning streak snapped by UNC Greensboro, 69-63. After tonight s game, Manhattan has 12 days off before opening MAAC play against Rider on Jan. 3. ABOUT MANHATTAN Manhattan continues its five-game homestand looking to snap a twogame skid. The Lady Jaspers are coming off a 71-67 loss to Cornell on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Michelle Pacheco had 23 points on Saturday, her second straight 20-point game and third of the season. Junior guard Abby Wentworth averages 10.4 points per game, while sophomore forward Nadia Peters ranks second in the MAAC in both field goal percentage (.582, 32-of-55) and blocks (1.9 bpg). ABOUT At 6-4, Fordham is off to its best start since the 2003-04 season. The Rams had a four-game winning streak snapped with a 69-63 loss to UNC Greensboro in their last game on Dec. 12. Fordham defeated three MAAC teams (Saint Peter s, Rider, Iona) during that stretch. Senior forward Randall Hurst leads the Rams with 16.2 points per game while also ranking second on the team with 6.0 rebounds per contest. Sophomore forward Becky Peters averages 12.1 points per game and junior forward Katie Vican adds 11.1 points per contest. Vican is a.500 (10-of-20) three-point shooter. Junior forward Tiffany Stokes grabs a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game to go along with her 10.5 points per contest. Stokes also leads the Rams with 1.1 blocks per game. Freshman guard Kristina Bell paces the team in both assists (2.6 apg) and steals (1.9 spg). Fordham was picked to finish 14th in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches Poll. MANHATTAN VS ALL-TIME Tonight s game is the 41st Battle of the Bronx. Manhattan holds a 22-18 edge in the series, but the Rams have won two of the last three meetings, including a 62-49 victory last season at Rose Hill Gym. The Lady Jaspers won the last meeting at Draddy Gymnasium, 65-53, on Nov. 11, 2007. Manhattan and Fordham have played at least once a season every year since the 1979-80 campaign. CORNELL 71, MANHATTAN 67 The Lady Jaspers scored the first eight points of the game and led 29-25 at halftime, but Cornell erupted for 46 second-half points, and Manhattan s comeback effort came up just short in the Big Red s 71-67 victory on Saturday afternoon. After the Lady Jaspers used a 5-0 run late in the first half to take a 29-25 halftime lead, Michelle Pacheco extended the advantage to six points with a layup to open the second half. However, the Big Red responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. Manhattan had a chance to tie it late, but Abby Wentworth s three-pointer was off the mark. Pacheco finished with 23 points, her second straight 20-point game, to lead the Lady Jaspers. Wentworth tallied 14 points, while Alyssa Herrington drained her 100th career three-pointer as part of a 12-point effort. JASPERVISION All 15 Manhattan home games will be webcast live on www.gojaspers.com as a part of the JasperVision package. NEW COACH, IMPRESSIVE RESUME John Olenowski was named the seventh head coach in program history on April 15, 2009. A 1978 graduate of Saint Leo College, Olenowski guided Morris Catholic High School in Denville, N.J., to a 330-39 record and three state championships in 14 seasons as head coach. From 1982-85, he was the head coach at Pace University for three seasons. Olenowski compiled a 70-28 record at Pace, including a 28-3 mark and the NCAA Division II East Regional title in 1984-85. With his season opening victory over St. Francis (NY), Olenowski became the third coach in program history to win his Manhattan debut. ANOTHER NEW FACE Manhattan has another new face on the sidelines in assistant coach Kristen Piscadlo. Piscadlo joined the Manhattan staff after two seasons as an assistant at Brown. A 2006 graduate of Muhlenberg College, she is the Mules all-time leader in assists and was named First Team All-Centennial Conference in 2004-05. PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY New Manhattan Head Coach John Olenowski has brought a new philosophy with him to Riverdale. In his office, Olenowski keeps a copy of the Notre Dame football team s famous Play Like a Champion sign that is autographed by former Fighting Irish Head Coach Charlie Weis. He had the slogan printed on a Jasper green sign that now hangs in the Manhattan locker room. Olenowski also takes inspiration from famed North Carolina Head Coach Dean Smith, and has also adopted Smith s philosophy, Play Hard, Play Smart, Play Together. This motto, too, is now on a sign in the Manhattan locker room, as well as the team s warmup t-shirts, with one minor change. To emphasize the team first, Olenowski switched the order to Play Hard, Play Together, Play Smart. A third new sign in the Lady Jaspers locker room stresses the team goals for the 2009-10 season, Have Passion, Strive for Excellence, Play with Poise. THREE FOR ALYSSA With two three-pointers on Saturday afternoon, sophomore guard Alyssa Herrington became the seventh player in program history with 100 career treys. She reached the mark in her 39th career game, making her the quickest Lady Jasper to achieve the feat in program history (all-time leader Tiffany Schettig needed 46 games to reach 100 three-pointers). Herrington averaged a MAAC-leading 2.9 threepointers per game last season, and she currently leads the MAAC with 2.8 treys per game in 2009-10. LOUTS AND LOUTS OF PRODUCTION Sophomore forward Lindsey Loutsenhizer leads the Lady Jaspers in rebounding and ranks second on the squad in scoring. Loutsenhizer has led Manhattan in rebounding seven times this season, including two nine-rebound efforts. For the season, Loutsenhizer averages 6.4 boards per contest. She tied a career-high with 19 points in the loss to Vermont and averages 13.0 points per game.

Pacheco leads the Lady Jaspers and ranks third in the MAAC in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game. She has recorded three 20-point games this season, including a career-high 25 point effort against Hofstra on Dec. 12. Pacheco also averages a MAAC-leading 6.2 assists per game. She has led the Lady Jaspers in assists in every game, and has dished out at least eight assists four times this season. Pacheco also ranks third in the MAAC in steals, averaging 3.1 per game. THE BIG FIVE Manhattan has used the same starting lineup in all but one game this season, and the five starters are all averaging at least 28 minutes per game. Not surprisingly, the starting five has provided a majority of the team s offensive production. The quintet has accounted for 85.9 percent of Manhattan s scoring, led by Michelle Pacheco s 15.6 points per game. As a unit, the starters are shooting.429 (204-of- 475) from the field, while the rest of the team is shooting.350 (35- of-100). The starting lineup also accounts for 64.3 percent of the Lady Jaspers rebounds, led by Lindsey Loutsenhizer s 6.4 per game. BATTLE OF THE BRONX Tonight s game is the sixth meeting between the local rivals during the 2009-10 athletic season. Fordham currently leads the all-sports series 3-2. The Rams won the first three contests, posting a 3-1 triumph in volleyball, a 3-0 win in women s soccer, and a 1-0 victory in men s soccer. Manhattan, however, claimed a 4-3 victory in women s tennis and recorded a 68-44 win over the Rams in the men s basketball game on Nov. 28. The baseball squads will meet on March 3, while the softball teams wrap-up the all-sports season series with a doubleheader on April 6. THE TALL AND SHORT OF IT Standing at 6-3, center Alicia Marculitis is the tallest player on the Manhattan roster. Forwards Nadia Peters (6-1) and Lindsey Loutsenhizer (6-0) are also listed at 6-0 or taller. Guards Ondya Morgan and Laura Rivera are the shortest members of the team, both standing 5-6. YOUTH MOVEMENT Manhattan is one of the youngest teams in the nation this season. Of the 13 players on the roster, four are true freshmen (Maggie Blair, Karita Brown, Toni-Ann Lawrence, Ondya Morgan), five are sophomores (Schyanne Halfkenny, Alyssa Herrington, Lindsey Loutsenhizer, Laura Rivera and Kerri White) and one is a redshirt sophomore (Nadia Peters). The Lady Jaspers have just one senior (Michelle Pacheco) and only two juniors (Alicia Marculitis and Abby Wentworth) on the squad. MEET THE NEWBIES The four freshmen on the Manhattan roster each bring impressive credentials with them to Riverdale. TWO MORE GOING GREEN Manhattan signed a pair of players to National Letters of Intent during the NCAA s early signing period. Brandone Roberts, a 6-3 center from Jessup, Md., and Monica Roeder, a 6-0 guard/forward from Marlton, N.J., will join the Lady Jaspers for the 2010-11 season. Roberts averaged 9.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game last season at Hammond High School, and she was named Hammond s Offensive Player of the Year. Roeder led Cherokee High School to the 2007-08 conference championship and was a Second Team All- South Jersey selection. I LOVE NEW YORK Seven of the 13 players on the Manhattan roster are natives of New York State and an eighth, Ondya Morgan, is from nearby New Brunswick, N.J. A pair of Lady Jaspers (Michelle Pacheco, Nadia Peters) are Bronx products, while Maggie Blair (Briarcliff) and Alyssa Herrington (Cambridge) hail from Upstate New York. Kerri White is from Flushing, Queens, while Toni-Ann Lawrence and Laura Rivera were high school teammates at Elmont High School in Elmont, Long Island. SCHEDULE CHANGE Thanks to a change in the MAAC s scheduling format, the Lady Jaspers don t play a conference game until January. This marks the first time since 1998-99 that Manhattan doesn t open its MAAC schedule until the New Year. The 1998-99 campaign was also the last time the Lady Jaspers played all of their non-conference games without interruption to start the season, then finished the regular season by playing 18 straight MAAC games. MAAC PRESEASON POLL The Lady Jaspers were chosen to finish ninth in the MAAC s annual preseason coaches poll. Four-time defending conference Marist was the unanimous pick to repeat, followed by Iona and Canisius. Rider was fourth in the poll, then came Fairfield, Loyola and Siena. After the Lady Jaspers, Niagara was tabbed to finish 10th. HEADING BACK TO ALBANY The 2010 Citizens Bank MAAC Basketball Championships will be held at the Times Union Center in Albany from March 4-7. This marks the third consecutive season, and the 13th time since 1992, that the postseason conference tournament will be held at the Times Union Center. EARLY BIRDS Tonight s contest is just the fourth night game for the Lady Jaspers this season, and one of only 11 on the regular season schedule. The Lady Jaspers play 18 of their 29 games during the day (tip-off before

6 p.m.), including a six-game span in January where they don t start any later than 4:30 p.m. Manhattan s earliest start time is an 11 a.m. game on Jan. 11. 2009-10 MAAC Standings MAAC Overall Fairfield 0-0 6-2 Marist 0-0 6-4 Canisius 0-0 5-4 Loyola 0-0 4-5 Manhattan 0-0 4-6 Iona 0-0 3-7 Niagara 0-0 3-8 Saint Peter s 0-0 2-6 Rider 0-0 2-8 Siena 0-0 1-7 Results/Schedule Saturday, December 19 Bowling Green 67, Canisius 42 Cornell 71, Manhattan 67 Seton Hall 54, Saint Peter s 52 Marist 68, Hartford 47 Sunday, December 20 Fairfield 58, IPFW 57 Loyola 81, UMBC 74 Niagara 71, Akron 60 La Salle 55, Rider 54 No. 1 Connecticut 90, Iona 35 Monday, December 21 Wagner, 7 p.m. Canisius at Marquette, 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 22 Fordham at Manhattan, 7 p.m. Northeastern, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 23 Fairfield at Albany, 5 p.m. Monday, December 28 Loyola vs. Drexel, 5:30 p.m. New Hampshire, 7 p.m. Rider at Syracuse, 7 p.m. St. Francis (NY), 7:30 p.m. POSTSEASON PARTY Five teams that reached the postseason in 2009 highlight the 2009-10 Manhattan schedule. The Lady Jaspers are 0-3 this season against 2009 postseason participants, falling to Virginia, Sacred Heart and Vermont. Virginia defeated MAAC Champion Marist in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing in the second round. Sacred Heart and Vermont also reached the NCAA Tournament in 2009. In addition, Canisius played in the 2009 Women s NIT. CONFERENCE CALL Manhattan takes on teams from nine different conferences in its 11 non-conference games. The Lady Jaspers face two teams from the Ivy League (Columbia, Cornell) and Northeast Conference (Sacred Heart, St. Francis), as well as one opponent each from the America East (Vermont), Atlantic Coast Conference (Virginia), Atlantic 10 (Fordham), Colonial Athletic Association (Hofstra), Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (Maryland Eastern Shore), Patriot League (Army) and Southern Conference (Elon). PRESEASON PROJECTIONS Manhattan s 11-game non-conference slate features teams from a mix of conferences, and those squads were picked all over the map in their respective leagues preseason polls. Two teams were picked to win their conference title (Sacred Heart and Vermont), while another was predicted to finish in second place (Maryland Eastern Shore). Below is a list of where all of the Lady Jaspers 2008-09 non-conference opponents ranked in their conference s preseason poll: Opponent (2008-09 record) Preseason Pick (conference) St. Francis (4-25) 12th of 12 (Northeast) Virginia (24-10) 4th of 12 (ACC) Md. Eastern Shore (15-14) 2nd of 11 (MEAC) Columbia (13-15) 4th of 8 (Ivy) Sacred Heart (25-8) 1st of 12 (Northeast) Elon (5-26) 10th of 11 (Southern) Vermont (21-12) 1st of 9 (America East) Army (19-12) 6th of 8 (Patriot) Hofstra (16-14) 7th of 12 (Colonial) Cornell (10-16) 5th of 8 (Ivy) Fordham (8-21) 14th of 14 (Atlantic 10) PINK ZONE For the third straight season, the Lady Jaspers will participate in the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s Pink Zone initiative for breast cancer awareness. Over 900 schools participated last season, including all 10 MAAC institutions. Manhattan s Pink Zone game will be the home contest against Niagara on Feb. 13. The Lady Jaspers have gotten involved in other ways, as well. The entire team and coaching staff ran in the 2009 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which drew more than 25,000 runners to Central Park West on Sept. 13.

In an effort to increase student involvement at basketball games and give the Jaspers more of a homecourt advantage, the Manhattan Athletic Department and student government worked closely together to develop the Jasper Jungle. Students were given Jasper Jungle t-shirts and are encouraged to sit in the designated Jasper Jungle section of the stands across from the visitors bench. The t-shirts were handed out at the Manhattan Madness pep rally held the night before the first game. WHAT S A JASPER? Manhattan has the only athletic program in Division I with the nickname Jaspers. The unique nickname came from one of Manhattan s most memorable figures, Brother Jasper of Mary, F.S.C. Brother Jasper served the College in the late 1800s and served as the first coach of Manhattan s baseball team. He is credited as the creator of the seventh-inning stretch, which has become a time-honored tradition at ballparks across the country. During a game in the 1880s, Brother Jasper noticed students getting restless in the middle of the seventh inning of a close game, so he called timeout and told the students to stand up a stretch for a few minutes before resuming the game. Since Manhattan regularly played the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds in the 1880s and into the 1890s, the tradition spread into the major leagues. introducing your manhattan college lady jaspers...
