Director s Corner Jason Harrold April Fools Addition: Our first quarter is in the books and of course we had a lot of great rides and events. Thank you everyone for contributing to the ride meetings, showing up to and supporting the rides. You are what make LA#1 the World s Greatest Harley Owners Group, so THANK YOU. It takes all of us to contribute with new and fun ideas, keeping our calendar diverse and balanced and also to support those events and making them fun. We have a pretty packed calendar the next few months. Make sure that you are checking the calendar on our website and are in the know. Some of these events include Yuma and Laughlin in April and Run for the Wall in May. In June we have a few events that you need to keep on your radar as well, which are: The Costa Mesa Speedway Harley Night and Sidecar racing, the Bartels Chili Cook-off, and the Family Picnic/30th Anniversary. If you are a lady, make sure you check in with Kary who coordinates the Ladies of Harley activities. If you are going to Costa Mesa Speedway please RSVP. We need to preorder the tickets as we are getting reserved seating in a block of seats. This event will probably sell out. Harley Night and Side Car Racing at the Costa Mesa Speedway is a really fun event. So come out. It will be a blast! I also wanted to mention that we have a Group Riding page on our website on the Member Tab, which has a lot of information about group riding in general. That s it for me, have a fantastic April and I look forward to seeing you at our next event! Vrrrroooooooooooommm! - Jason Not Getting Chapter E-Mail Updates? Breaking in the Newbies at Newcomb s Jason Harrold Alli over at the Bartels Riding Academy hit me up the other day and asked if I would like to go on a ride with some of the newly graduated riders of the Bartels Riding Academy. I checked with the Mrs. first, then I checked the LA1 calendar. We didn't have anything going on that day so it was a done deal. We have had some of our members go through the Riding Academy and they are solid riders so I was interested to get a chance to ride with them. Mike O., one of the Bartels' Riding Academy Alumni was already planning on going so we rolled in together. The weather was great and as we pulled into the parking lot, Bartels' was bustling with activity so at first it was hard to tell who was there for the ride. The newly graduated riders planned on going to Newcomb s Ranch. Alli asked if we were familiar with the route, and we were so she gave us the honor of the Lead and Sweep positions. We briefed the group on the route, gave some tips about riding in a group, and described what to expect. Without delay, Mike exited Bartels' with 26 bikes following behind. After a few freeway transitions we made it to the bottom of the mountains of Angeles National Forest. I was already pretty impressed by the confidence of the riders thus far. For new riders, riding the freeways can be frightening. But for some, the 405 is more like 4 oh forget it. And for riders new to group riding, riding in a group can be intimidating. These riders were riding in the group flawlessly. They kept proper distance, transitioned safely and stayed together, which was no easy task, given the state of the traffic that day. As we got up into the canyons the riders seemed pretty relaxed. We moved into the single file formation. They were all using their fundamentals: preparing for the turn, looking into the turn and not fixating, counter steering, throttle control, etc. Though the speed was a tad slower than what more experienced riders would ride, we kept a nice pace and it was pretty impressive that these Academy graduates were conquering the canyons not long after graduating. The day wasn't the best for everyone that Saturday. The fire department had shut down the road temporarily and were preparing a rider (not in our group) to be helicoptered out. We approached one of the first responders to see what happened and how long the road would be closed. He mentioned that it was a new rider Page 11 going too fast around a corner and the road would be opened in about ten minutes. Unfortunately this is not an isolated occurrence on that stretch of Angeles. It was terrible to see a rider down but I think it highlighted some points in the minds of our group Training is invaluable. Great gear is paramount. Ride within your ability. We got to Newcomb s Ranch and had a great feast. It was great to hear about why people decided to learn to ride and see their eyes light up when they talked about their bikes. One young guy I talked to is a Marine stationed out of Camp Pendleton. He was set to be medically discharged in September. I asked him what bike he had but he hadn't purchased his bike just yet. We talked for a while about different bikes, some of the differences and what made them unique. By the end of the ride I think he had his heart set on a 1200 Sportster. After we finished eating we headed back to Bartels' where we said our goodbyes. I headed inside and over to the parts department. About ten minutes later I saw the young Marine walking with Funkhouser to pick out his new bike. I yelled to Funkhouser, "make sure he gets the active duty Marine discount". I've seen that look before in the eyes of a rider. That Marine was hooked for life. I was glad to be a part of that. Merchandise Todmo Wow! We are only into the month of April, and a whole lot of exciting things have already happened in our chapter. I would like to take this time to reach out to all our members, especially the new! As you know, besides being Treasurer, and one of our Road Captains, I also moonlight as our Merchandise Dude. There s nothing like supporting your chapter by sporting a vest or jacket which has our LA1 rocker and H.O.G. emblem on the front and rear. Or maybe it s time to add them to that denim vest you just earned. As a reminder, I carry multiple patch styles with me most of the time. I also have established patches, as well as extra past event patches (limited quantity). If you are unable to make it to certain chapter functions, you can reach me by e-mail at treasurer@la1hog.com, and we can make arrangements to get patches to you. Speaking of the LA1 H.O.G. denim vest, to our veteran members; I ve noticed that a few of your vests have seen better days. I bet you are asking yourself, I wonder if I can get another one? The answer is to that is YES. The next time you see me, ask me for details, or just send me an email. We also have the chapter s 30 Year Anniversary coming up on June 24 th. That is just a short time away. In celebration of that, our Director, Jason has designed a spectacular Anniversary Patch. At our last General Meeting, we had a signup sheet that went around that Page 15 kind of got mistaken for the regular signup sheet. If you missed the opportunity to sign up for this once-in-a-30-year opportunity, please contact me A.S.A.P. to add you to the list. These special patches are currently under construction, and will go fast. On another note, I made an announcement about a long sleeve LA1 H.O.G. chapter shirt with the new skull H.O.G. logo on it. The response at the General Meeting was very positive, but nobody signed up for one. In order to make this a go, we need to have a minimum order of 24. There will be another chance to sign-up for one (or more) in the near future. Let s be proud of who we are, show off our LA1 enthusiasm, and sport some chapter threads when we Saddle Up and Ride.
