River City News March, 2018 MISSOURI DISTRICT MEETING TIME & PLACE 2ND Monday 7:00 PM* Golden Corral Zumbehl Rd St. Charles, MO 2018 W2 Dinner at Chili s

2018 Spring Fling Mardi Gras and Beyond Spring Fling is the one event everyone looks forward to, we are all in one hotel and the events abound. Ken, Jan and TEAM Missouri went out of their way to make this another awesome opportunity. See http://mogwrra.org/gwrramow2/photos.htm and mogwrra.mogwrra.org for photos. Chapter W2 had quite a few folks home sick, we hope they are doing well. Seminars were well attended; there were multiple games and other thought provoking entertainment. No one was bored and then the festivities began. Just a few notes, the costumes and skits were fantastic, everyone really thought it was funny when the mourners and Region E coffin came through the door. Sonny was the Master of Music, Ken kept fun going. Carla Heidebur s Mardi Gras costume won First Prize. Marty Hall was presented the Glenn and Carol White District Participation Award. Couple of the Year Basket, we want to thank Sue Beaird and Sue Albee for preparing the baskets and all that contributed. Chapter W2 took home 4 of the baskets, so it was a good evening. The after party went well into the evening and everyone enjoyed the music and a chance to just chill with friends. Next year the theme is going to be Wild Wild West, who knows what that might bring. Moving on to more events, Spring seems to come and go, but it will be here soon. We continue to work together to be able to get some rides prepared, if you have ideas and destinations please tell Don Beaird or one of TEAM W2 so we can review.

We are trying to become a little more capable to put routes together for sharing on our GPS s, hopefully soon. NOTE: Chapter W2 Maintenance Day is April 7th at Jerry Rothermich s house. Come to share your experience, work on your bike or trailer. We have some new trailer owners that need to check and pack their bearings, there will be folks on site to assist. You will need to provide your own supplies, oil, filters and antifreeze also please bring some clean-up supplies to share. (i.e. rags, paper towels, shop towels, etc) Also for those that would like to be a GWRRA Trainer, there will be Instructor Training and Certification Program(ITCP) Training; Wesley United Methodist; 2727 Wesley St. Jefferson City, Mo; 8:00 AM 5:00 PM; Missouri District will be providing lunch. Two great dinner rides coming up: March 22: Cannoli's Restaurant; 463 N. Hwy 67, Florissant, MO; N. Hwy 67 & W. Washington St. April 19: Granite City Food & Brewery; 11411 Olive Blvd, Creve Coeur Chapter W2, our first Spring Ride if the weather cooperates April 29; Spring Shake Out "Back Roads" Ride ; Meet 12:30PM, Mid-Rivers Burger King ; KSU 12:45PM So as we prepare to travel this year, keep watching your emails and the Chapter Website event page (is updated frequently) as always, you just never know what TEAM W2 is up to. See ya on the road. Thank you all for Making a Difference. Ride Safe and Enjoy Life Bob and Diane Phelps

10 Spring Motorcycle Hazards and How to Address Them Posted on March 23, 2012 by lizjansen by Liz Jansen Spring weather is bringing motorcycles out of hibernation. That doesn t mean people will notice you. Be alert to these unique hazards, especially during those first rides of the season. 1. Automobile drivers. They haven t had to share the road with you for 4 months. Add to that general inattentiveness and distractions and it s a recipe for trouble. Give yourself plenty of space, watch other drivers closely and make yourself as visible as possible. Assume you re invisible. 2. Spring fever. There s nothing like those first few rides. Remember, you have the whole season ahead of you take your time, take it easy and get used to riding again. 3. Sand, salt, grit on the road. Road crews clean up as quickly as possible but be prepared for sand especially on corners and intersections. You don t want to discover it when you re leaned over in a curve or trying to stop at an intersection or behind a bus! 4. Rusty skills. You likely haven t done much riding in the past 4 months. Muscle memory fades with inactivity and you may not have the same instinctual reactions even if you ve been riding for many years. Practice in a parking lot before heading out into traffic. 5. Motorcycle one that s not ready to go. If you ve done the proper winter maintenance, it should be in good shape. Before you take it out though, check cables, fluid levels, tires, tire pressure, loose parts

6. Weather. Early spring can mean unpredictable weather that can suddenly cool off significantly. Wear correct gear and be cognizant of the effects of cold. It can bring on fatigue insidiously, reduce your reaction time and ability to physically respond. 7. Frost heaves, potholes. Winter in northern climes can be brutal on roads. Watch for heaves, holes and broken edges in the pavement. 8. Your physical fitness. As wonderful as it feels to be out in the wind, riding is taxing physically. Being rested and fit offers a more enjoyable and safer ride. 9. Animals the four-legged variety. They start moving around in spring too and seem to appear out of nowhere often with young in tow. 10.Other motorcycle riders. Whether they re experienced or not and there are more inexperienced riders out there than ever they too have spring fever, rusty skills and have to be prepared for all the same hazards as you do. This takes on even greater importance when you re riding with a group i.e. any more than one person. Bonus: Plan and book a skills refresher course under the guidance of experienced instructors. It s wise to refresh annually, whether it s an off -road course, at the track or at another recognized course it can save your life. And it s fun! Ride safe and enjoy life. Jerry Rothermich Chapter W2 Rider Educator
