Upton Heath Church of England Primary School Friday 25th January 2019 Upton Heath Primary School Astronomy Club Some things to observe in the evening (and morning!) skies Jan 2019 Feb 2019 (by Mr. Chris Brankin.) The Moon: To view craters (with small telescope or binoculars) best time is around first quarter Moon which will be around 12 Jan and 12 Feb.. about 5-6.00pm looking South. Total Lunar Eclipse: Thanks to Lee, the assistant caretaker, for pointing out that in the EARLY MORNING of Monday 21 Jan there is a Total Lunar Eclipse when the Moon passes into the Earth s shadow. The whole thing lasts about 5 hours centred around totality, ~4.40-5.40 am, when the Moon will appear a weird RED colour away to the West. So if you can t sleep AND it is clear go for it!!! The Planets: MARS is on view throughout this period high in the sky.. look South from dusk for a tiny orange blob (clearly drifting West like everything else during the night). Around the 13th Feb there is a chance to view URANUS which will be very close to Mars being just South of Mars on the 13th.. look for a Blue-Green blob.. will probably need a small telescope or binoculars. VENUS is a brilliant sight in the early MORNING sky throughout January.. look South from about 7.00 till it gets too bright. On 31 Jan Venus is next to a waning crescent MOON and from mid January JUPITER, not quite so bright, passes just below it! Indeed on the 31st Venus is to the left of the waning crescent Moon and Jupiter to the right. (Health and Safety.. SINCE THE SUN RISES ABOUT 8.00AM TAKE GREAT CARE NOT TO LOOK DIRECTLY AT IT ESPECIALLY WITH BINOCULARS OR TELESCOPES.) New Behaviour Policy We will be holding a parents meeting on Thursday 31st January at 5pm in the large hall for anyone who would like to attend. MBNA Grant Funding MBNA Grant Funding On behalf of everyone at Upton Heath we would like to thank our friends at MBNA General Foundation who have very generously given us 33,300 to purchase new touch screens in every classroom in the school which will be installed as part of the new build scheme. And thank you to IDNS, the technical team working on the build, who agreed to install them all for us for free. It s going to make a huge difference to the interactive experience for the children. A special thank you goes to James Thompson one of our parents who supported our application to help make the whole thing possible. We really can t thank you enough. This will allow us to divert what precious little funding we have to another key area.

Can you help? Does the employer you work for offer similar schemes where they support local projects? Would you be happy to support an application from us? We re always looking for funding to refresh or improve our IT provision, new furniture the list goes on as I m sure you can imagine. With funding for schools so tight at the moment we appreciate any help you can give us. It might not necessarily be funding you have access to, but perhaps you have skills and experience we could use; We have a parent who is helping us to secure funding for building works across the Trust, another who has taken the time to put together some initial concepts for how we might look to develop the look and feel of the new build once it s handed over, some Dad s decorated the main hall for us over the Christmas holiday last year. Can you see something we can improve, and can you help us to make that happen? If you can help please call the office on 01244 972970 and ask to speak to Mr Oakes or email to fm@thesamaratrust.cheshire.sch.uk Upton Village Pre-School If you would like your younger child to attend pre-school please contact them as soon as possible using the link https://uptonvillagepreschool.co.uk/application-form/. They do have a very long waiting list and the earlier parents apply, the more chance they stand of being offered a place and being able to choose the days/sessions that suit them. Remember also No Parking in the Staff Car Park. Parking at School We all know that parking at school, at all schools can be challenging these days. If we drive and park with consideration for others and follow a few simple guidelines we can help to make it run as safely and smoothly as possible. With this in mind, please take the time to read the following. If you drop off at S4YC before 8 am and pick up after 5.30 pm (sign on the main gates) you may drive onto school grounds to drop off and pick up. Do not park in the staff car park which is clearly marked. Within the times above, Blue Badge holders and Upton Heath Permit holders may park on the school grounds if there are spaces available. Do not park in the staff car park which is clearly marked. In the surrounding streets please do;

Be polite and courteous to our neighbours and other road users, Allow additional time to park at peak times as spaces will be limited, Be mindful that there are small children around who may not be accompanied by an adult and could be difficult to spot, Aim to walk or cycle to school whenever possible. Please do not; Park on the paths or grass verges, Park across a dropped curb, Park across a neighbour s driveway, Park on a neighbour s driveway, Park on a bend, Park opposite or within 10m of a junction (whether the junction is lined or not), Park, load or unload on the yellow lines or zig zag lines, Park in the bus stop opposite the school gates. We have arranged to use the Wheatsheaf Inn car park, however we only have permission to park in the bays located on the left hand side of their car park (looking from Heath Road), not in any of the other bays, or in any of the circulation spaces around the car park. If all of the marked bays on the left are full you will need to find an alternative place to park. We only have permission to use their car park at drop off and pick up time, not at any other point in the day. The car park is for their patrons and cannot be used if we hold a school event such as sports day. We have arranged to use the United Reform Church s car park and again we only have permission to use their car park at drop off and pick up time, not at any other point in the day. The car park is for their congregation and clubs to use and cannot be used if we hold a school event such as sports day.
