4-H Re-enrollment Begins 4-H Re-enrollment began on September 1st. Please remember to re-enroll for the new 4-H year. The deadline to re-enroll will be December 1st. After that time you will not receive the 4-H newsletter if you have not re-enrolled. Clover Kids Section New to our newsletter this month and the following months will be a Clover Kids section. This will highlight information specific for Clover Kids going on that month or upcoming months. If we have nothing upcoming we will feature ideas/ crafts to do either at your upcoming meeting or at home with your Clover Kid!! Check it out!! Babysitting Clinic Baby Sitting Clinic to be held Saturday, November 10th at the Keokuk Public Library. Cost is free due to Keokuk Library paying fees. You will bring home a babysitting bag. Spots are limited. Call the Extension Office to get signed up today. Deadline to sign up is November 2nd. Get your hands on babysitting information, make a babysitting bag, learn about preventing and handling emergencies, as well as marketing your business to start earning jobs babysitting 4-H Awards Banquet Our Annual 4-H Awards Banquet will be held on Sunday, November 4th from 4-7PM at the Denmark United Church of Christ in Denmark, Iowa! A meal will be served from 4-5PM, with the banquet from 5-7!! The County Council would like everyone to bring a donation for a child s birthday bag whether it be cake mix, cupcake wrappers, party hats, streamers, etc. We are going to put together bags that less fortunate parents can pick up at the food pantry and have a birthday party for their child. If you need more ideas contact the Extension Office. Time to celebrate the past years achievements and accomplishments. From the Desk of the CYC: It s November!! That is hard to believe. The temperatures are dropping. The Holidays will be here before we know it. This is the month to celebrate last years achievements. Hope to see you at the Awards Banquet on November 4th. Before long weigh-ins will be starting and we will soon be looking at our projects for the 2019 fair. We have added a Clover Kids Section to this newsletter highlighting Clover Kids activities or ideas/ crafts to do either at a meeting or at home with Clover Kids. Check it out. National 4-H Week Thank you to everyone who participated in our 4-H Walk and Open House. We had around 50 people for our walk even though it was chilly. We also had some clubs join in the fun during National 4-H Week with a parade float and a hayrack ride! Thank you to all the people who put up locker posters during the week!! Congratulations!! Paula Ellis received the America s Farmers Grow Communities Award. She donated the proceeds to the Lee County 4-H fund!! Congratulations Paula and thank you for your generous donation. You are a great example of what 4-H is about!! 3
4-H Awards Banquet 4-H Awards Banquet is Sunday, November 4th from 4-7 PM at the Denmark United Church of Christ. Meal will be served from 4-5PM. Banquet will start at 5PM. Clover Kids are encouraged to come. We hope to see you there. Fun Activity Turkey Hand Prints (You will need an adult to help you and wear old clothes or an apron!) You will need: -Paper -Paint -Paintbrushes and Marker/Crayon How to: Take your paint brush and paint your palm and thumb one color and each of your fingers different colors. Place your hand on your piece of paper. Wash hands and then wait until dry to add beak, feet, eye and beard! 4
2019 Lee County Fair Dates: July 10-15 Lee County Multi-Species Fitting and Showmanship Clinic New this year will be a Livestock Fitting and Showmanship Clinic! The Clinic will be on Sunday, June 9th at 5:30 PM. This is open to all Lee County 4-H Members!! Species to be covered: Beef, Swine, Sheep, Meat Goats, Poultry & Rabbits. It will be held at the Lee County Fairgrounds! More details to come!!! Keep an eye out for our NEW MEMBER PACKETS!! Beef Weigh-in Market Beef Weigh-in will take place on Saturday, December 1st at the Lee County Fairgrounds. Calves should arrive from 9:00 am to 10:30 am for weigh-in & retinal imaging. Tags will be $2.00 a head and retinal images will be $10.00 a head. Within this packet is be a livestock section. We have created a check-list of deadlines and expectations for each species! These check-lists are beneficial for everyone, not just new members. We encourage you to look over this. In addition to the check-lists we have made an appendix that will show examples of all the documentation needed. Click here to view the NEW MEMBER PACKET!!! 2019 Livestock Weigh-In Dates: Share-A-Calf Pick-Up will start at 10:30 am. Exhibitors will be chosen by lottery for the order they will select. Beef Weigh-In & Share-A-Calf Pick-Up: December 1 Sheep and Meat Goat Weigh-In: April 27 Swine Weigh-In & Competitive Swine Pick-Up: March 24 All County and State Fair market beef animals will need to be verified in 4-HOnline by February 1, 2019. There are no exceptions to this rule. 5
Livestock Judging Coaches Clinic: The Department of Animal Science will be offering a clinic for adults who would like to learn more about how to coach a livestock judging team. The event will be held on April 20, 2019 at Iowa State University. Participants will receive hands-on instruction from the ISU livestock judging coach and team. More information will be available soon. If you have questions please contact Amy Powell at ampowell@iastate.edu. Congratulations 4-H Livestock Exhibitors! The Lee County 4-H Program has raised enough money to cover the YQCA fees for 2019. The Extension Office will be purchasing YQCA coupons and delivering them to your 4-H leaders in January. Please make sure to check future newsletters for more information! 2019 Equine Extravaganza will be held on March 22-24.This is held at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. It isn t too soon to start gathering a team! 6
