No 3 Saturday 24 September 2016 THIS WEEK SEASON WEEK 3! PROGRAM 1 EARLY EVENTS U9-U17 WALKS U11-U17 JAVELIN 745AM sharp start Parents of participating athletes to assist SET-UP DUTY ROSTER 24 September 2016 FROM 7.30am (7:15am if possible this week!) U12 Set-up AND pack-up (NB: this is in addition to parental assistance) SPONSORS PRESIDENT S NOTE Welcome to Northern Districts Little Athletics! I hope everyone has enjoyed the first 2 weeks of the season so far. The first 2 weeks were designed to provide more of a coaching/technical aspect for the events, so athletes and parents have a better understanding of how to compete in the events on offer. This week we will start our regular program (Program 1) and we have Javelin for U11 - U17 and walks for U9 - U17 on offer as early events from 7:45am. We will provide some Javelin training this Saturday morning for first timers, at the event. Our Centre coaches, Martin & Clayton from Athletics Plus, will start our Thursday afternoon training sessions this week from 4:30pm - 5:30pm. They will train every fortnight starting September 22 with SP, Discus & HJ and then on Thursday October 6 with Running & LJ (the program will alternate each fortnight with these events). For anyone that would like more training, you can sign up with Athletics Plus for their weekly Tuesday night training sessions. You can find out more and register by going to their website http://www.athleticsplus.com.au/ Now that everyone has registered and bought their uniforms, it is a requirement at Northern Districts, and then at Zone, Region & State carnivals, that all athletes wear the correct uniform, which includes having all age patches, athlete registration numbers and Jetstar patches fixed correctly. If you have any feedabck about our club, we would be more than happy to hear about it. Good luck to all athletes with our season now in full swing. PLEASE SUPPORT OUR VALUED SPONSORS! PAGE 2 WEEK 2 TRACK & FIELD UPDATE STARTING ON-TIME From this week we transition to our standard program. Help us start as close to 8:30AM as possible by arriving and signing on from 8:15AM (or by 7:45AM for Early Events). KEY OFFICIALS SOS (OUR CENTRE NEEDS YOU!) We require Key Officials for Long Jump and Hurdles events. Training and support can be provided. Please see the assistant sign-on table team on Saturday morning if you can help. Thanks!!! CROSSING THE RUNNING TRACK We have had numerous occurrences of athletes AND PARENTS crossing the running tracks during events. This can be quite off putting to the athletes competing and can be dangerous. The sprint track is not to be crossed at any time with access around the track at both ends. When crossing the oval track, please check that it is clear to cross. AGE MANAGER REPORTS WEEK 2 SAT 17 SEPTEMBER UNDER 6B 14 very keen boys with loads of enthusiasm today - great to see so many new faces! The boys dug deep, competing in 200m, 300m and 50m run s back to back. Fantastic effort by Kaelan in the 300m, even though it was tough. Lots of first time efforts, with strong performances. Terrific start to the season Boys! UNDER 6G UNDER 7B UNDER 8B UNDER 8G Wonderful start to the season and positive first experiences for our mighty under 6 girls! They may be small, but they all have lots of enthusiasm, personality and talent. The girls are quickly making friends, and are enjoying their events. A great 300m by all last week, with everyone finishing their big race with a smile. Excellent long jump also, with Marli especially receiving a great result. Marli received the achievement award for the week well done! U7 Boys had a great day, the new comers performed well and interacted well with the regular boys and I think some new friendships were made. I hope to see them again this week. They had an outstanding day in the shot put with most boys throwing a PB and a special mention to Henry Aitken who threw a 4 metre PB, well done Henry! We would like to welcome our newcomers Sarthak and Anu, and are sure that they both will enjoy Little A's at our centre this season. It's also really pleasing to see that our U8 boys group are taking in the shot put and discus throwing lessons and are throwing really well with improved distances. The group were also keen to try their first 700m - they really ripped into it and realised that it's just a bit further than the 500m that they are used to. We are pleased that our group is really well behaved. Keep it up boys! Another busy Saturday morning with 18 of 19 Under 8 girls present for their Little A's events. A busy schedule saw the girls take part in Discus, 100m, 70m for the first time this year and the event some of the girls dreaded, the 700m. All the girls had a great day and tried their hardest in each event.

PAGE 3 A big well done to Olivia M or her massive throw in Discus, in her first ever attempt. Penny G's amazing run in the 700m and to Tabitha V for a super effort in pushing through the pain barrier in completing the 700m. Most improved award went to Olivia M. Great work girls and see you all next week. UNDER 9G UNDER 10B UNDER 10G UNDER 11G UNDER 12B UNDER 13B First time at high jump and the girls looked like naturals very quickly (just remember to land on your feet!). Great team spirit helping out one of our girls in the 400m too! I'm proud of you all. Congrats to Lana for jumping over 1metre! A big welcome to Lilian and Sasha who started this week too. The second week of the season saw a huge number of PB's in the long jump & Hurdles! The Long Jump was a great competition between the boys with each jump being eagerly awaited, Daniel had a great first day back jumping over 3 metres for the first time. Joshua, Ethan W, Ethan T, Bradley & Liam all achieved PB s in the Long jump. Liam did a terrific first up run in the 800m followed strongly by Bradley in second place & Tobias Valiantly rounding out the field. Alex, Aaron and Ethan T who have joined the centre this year, excelled in the hurdles with PB's from their first attempt in week 1. We encourage personal achievement and this was demonstrated amongst the boys. It signals to me that the boys season will be one where they strive to improve for themselves alone. Kalan had an outstanding discus throw of 27.72m setting a new PB. What a great day on Saturday, beautiful weather, & a wonderful group of girls. We had a fantastic effort by everyone, quite a few PB's. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday What a fantastic group of girls showing wonderful sportsmanship all day by cheering on their fellow competitors and encouraging one another. Congratulations to Ella Rigby on completing her first 800m and was the U11's Girls winner of the sports award. Congratulations to Callie Morris, Sarah Passafaro, Brooke Fury and Brianne Thomson for their PB's in 60 m hurdles and to Brianne Thomson and Shayla Gleeson for a PB in the 800m. Week 2 and the U12 boys were right into it. The highlight was Matt, a new comer to NDLAC, beating his PB at high jump clearing 1.44m and throwing down the gauntlet to Ethan and others to compete for the SB. I look forward to seeing how the competition drives both boys in all the jumping events. Talking of good performances, last week Ethan equalled the centre record for the 60m hurdles. Well done young man. Again this week the boys responded well to the official tuition provided and as a result we had some good throws at the shot put. Bring on the rest of the season. The U13 boys had a great competitive day during our second weekend of the season. We also got a new member to our current very small team of 6. I m very happy to see all kids ran the 800M race despite having all said they wouldn t (... it took a little bit of convincing though ;-). It shows their great sporting spirit. AGE MANAGERS, WE LOVE HEARING YOUR UPDATES EACH WEEK! PLEASE EMAIL YOUR REPORT AND ANY PHOTOS TO NEWS@NDLAC.ORG.AU

PAGE 4 Our wonderful U9G warming up (??) before shot put! REGISTRATIONS STILL OPEN & ACCEPTING FORMS ETC. Registrations and payments will be in the room next to the Canteen from 8:15am 10:00am. Also, reminder to drop off Registration paperwork WWC Declaration, Parent Assistance Declaration and Medical info/photo Consent and Proof of Age. One of the main ways you can support the Club is to help us grow our member base. Stay healthy (great for Winter sport off-season fitness), learn new skills, and make great friendships so please spread the word!

UPCOMING DATES Mark these dates in the calendar, and keep an eye out for related communication! 8 October 2016: Crazy Sock & Hair Day 29 October 2016: Pinkletics Day and State Relay Teams announced 5 November 2016: NDLAC Pentathlon and Photo Day 19 & 20 Nov 2016: State Relay Championships, Homebush Selected Athletes, U8 U11 Saturday, U12-U17 Sunday Also, Sat 19 Nov 2016 @ Foxglove meet as per usual + Bring a Friend Day DID YOU KNOW ABOUT STATE RELAYS? The State Relay Championships is the largest event on the LANSW calendar in terms of number of competitors. As the name suggests the Championships are comprised entirely of team events. This is not limited to running relays, but throws and jumps as well. Northern Districts predominantly enters teams in either throwing or jumping events: Discus / Shotput team and Long Jump / High Jump team Junior athletes (U8 to U11) compete on Saturday 19 Nov and Senior athletes (U12 to U17) on Sunday 20 Nov. The Championships are being held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre (see the pics)! More details about the events and nomination / selection process will come in October, watch this space!

PAGE 6 WHAT HAPPENS IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER?? It looks like we have another clear Saturday morning forecast for this week (woo hoo!!), but for those of you wondering what happens in the case of bad weather: - A decision on whether our meet is on or off will generally be taken by 730AM - Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page and TeamApp communication for details Meets can be held in light rain and wet conditions, albeit with some modifications to the program possible. Our athlete safety is our top priority, and this will be the key consideration in any decision taken to cancel or suspend a meet. CONGRATS TO OUR RIO PARALYMPIC ATHLETES!! A silver medal to Australian Paralympic Team Captain Kurt Fearnley in the men s T54 wheelchair marathon wrapped up a big 11 days of athletics competition at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Australia came home with a total of 26 medals overall (5 th placed by medal total), including 3 gold medal efforts to James Turner in the T36 800m for athletes with cerebral palsy, sprinter Scott Reardon in the T42 leg amputee 100M and teenager Brayden Davidson in the T36 long jump for athletes with cerebral palsy. 8 of the total medals came from athletes making their Olympic debut, and many new PBs were set!

PAGE 7 SET UP AND PARENTAL ASSISTANCE 2016/2017 SEASON Compared to other sports, Little Athletics needs a larger number of parents to help run all events. Parents find that they get a great deal of enjoyment from active participation in their children s sport and your assistance is greatly appreciated. The minimum requirement is for one parent per family to assist every second week In addition, each age group is rostered twice each season to assist with setting up the oval before competition and packing up the oval after the completion of competition. Please make sure you are at the oval at 7.30am to assist with set-up. You can sign in at the table under the orange Jetstar tent and get pointed in the right direction to help out!
