ON THE AIR All of USC s home matches are broadcast live over the internet on www.usctrojans.com. RANKINGS USC is not ranked in the current USA Today/CSTV/AVCA poll. Hawaii is third. OPPONENTS The USC-Hawaii series is knotted at 27-27, but the Trojans have lost the last 8 meetings. Troy last beat the Rainbows in 2000 (in the first round of the MPSF tourney) and last won in Hawaii in 1999. LAST MATCHES After sweeping the alumni (30-26, 30-27, 30-27) on Feb. 8 in the North Gym, Joao Grangeiro had a match-best 10 kills and 10 digs to lead the USC men s volleyball team to a 30-25, 30-22, 30-24 sweep over Rutgers-Newark at the Penn State Invitational on Feb. 11. The Trojans outdid Rutgers-Newark in every statistical category: hitting percentage (.324 to.149), team blocks (14.5 to 9.5), digs (37 to 26) and aces (4 to 1). Chris McKniff and Andrew Vernon added 5 blocks each for Troy, while Grangeiro also had 4 blocks and 2 aces. The next day, Feb. 12, host No. 4 Penn State swept USC, 32-30, 30-27, 30-24. Blake Tippett had a matchbest 17 kills (hitting.333) with 3 blocks, while Vernon added 11 kills (hitting.500), McKniff had 4 blocks and Grangeiro had 9 kills and 8 digs. VOLLEYBALL SCHOOL Besides the 4 NCAA crowns (1977-80-88-90) that USC s men have won, the Women of Troy have captured 6 national volleyball titles. USC s women won the AIAW trophy in 1976, 1977 and 1980, and the NCAA crown in 1981. Then, coach Mick Haley s 2002 and 2003 Women of Troy squads captured the NCAA titles. COACH TURHAN DOUGLAS Third-year USC head coach Turhan Douglas, a Trojan assistant the previous 3 seasons, was promoted to head coach in May of 2002. He was 6-25 in 2003 and 6-23 in 2004. Being a head coach was nothing new to the 35-year-old Douglas. In fact, he exhibited his head coaching ability at USC while an assistant. When Pat Powers his predecessor at Troy missed USC s home match against BYU in 2001 to be with his ill mother, Douglas stepped in and directed the Trojans to a 3-1 upset over the top-ranked, undefeated Cougars. Douglas was a successful junior college and club coach before he came to USC for the 2000 season. He was the men s head coach at Pierce Junior College in Woodland Hills (Calif.) for 2 seasons (1998-99) and guided his squad to the South Coast Conference title both years while going 43-9. His 1999 team was the state runner-up and he was named the conference s Coach of the Year. He also was the head coach of Pierce s women s team for 6 seasons (1993-98). He also spent 6 years (1996-2001) as the director and coach of the Santa Monica (Calif.) Beach Club. In 1998, his team won the USA Junior Olympics Boys 17-and-Under championship. He was an assistant with the Santa Monica Junior College men s team for 4 years (1992-95). Douglas was a reserve middle blocker on the 1991 Long Beach State team that won the NCAA title (defeating USC in the final). He also played 2 seasons at Pierce (1987-88). The 1987 Pierce squad won the state crown and the 1988 team was the state runner-up.

OLD AND NEW Eleven Trojan lettermen from 2004, including all six starters, return this season. But several of Troy s six new freshmen figure to break into the 2005 starting lineup, a sign that USC is a more talented and much deeper team than in recent years. GRANGEIRO Do-it-all 6-0 junior Joao Grangeiro, who coming into 2005 had started all 60 matches in his Trojan career, figured to move back to libero in 2005 (he played there the first half of 2003). But he instead stayed at outside hitter, where he started the past seasonand-a-half. He currently leads USC in digs (108) and aces (23), and is second in kills (131). Last year, he had a team-best 235 digs and 37 aces, plus 299 kills and 40 blocks. --He had 7 digs vs. Cal State Northridge (1-7). --He had 11 digs, 7 kills and 3 aces vs. Pacific (1-7). --He had 7 kills and 3 digs vs. UC Santa Barbara (1-8). --He had 12 kills (hitting.550), 8 digs, 4 blocks and 3 aces vs. Stanford (1-14). --He had a match-best 15 digs along with 7 kills vs. Pacific (1-15). --He had 14 kills (hitting.333), 6 digs, 3 blocks and 2 aces vs. UC Irvine (1-19). --He had a team-best 16 kills (hitting.303) and 11 digs vs. UCLA (1-21). --He had 8 kills, 4 digs and 3 blocks vs. UC San Diego (1-26). --He had 9 kills, 8 digs and 2 aces vs. Long Beach State (1-29). --He had 9 kills (hitting.368) and 4 digs vs. Cal Baptist (2-1). --He had a team-best 16 kills (hitting.400) and 8 digs vs. Pepperdine (2-4). --He had a match-best 10 kills and 10 digs vs. Rutgers-Newark (2-11), plus 4 blocks and 2 aces. --He had 9 kills, 8 digs and 2 aces vs. Penn State (2-12). TIPPETT Blake Tippett, a 6-4 senior, returns as a starter in 2005, but he ll battle all year through a shoulder injury. He began the 2005 season at outside hitter, but moved back to opposite hitter after 7 matches. He currently leads USC in kills (155). He played opposite hitter last spring when he posted a teambest 380 kills, 146 digs, 36 blocks and 20 aces. --He had 17 kills (hitting.343) vs. Cal State Northridge (1-7). --He had 12 kills (hitting.381), 11 digs, 5 blocks and 2 aces vs. UC Santa Barbara (1-8). --He had a match-best 14 kills (hitting.458) vs. Stanford (1-14). --He had a match-high 22 kills (hitting.633) with 8 digs and 3 blocks vs. UC Irvine (1-19). --He had 14 kills and 6 digs vs. UCLA (1-21). --He had a match-best 16 kills (hitting.333) vs. UC San Diego (1-26). --He had a match-best 23 kills (hitting.326) vs. Long Beach State (1-29). --He had 9 kills vs. Cal Baptist (2-1). --He had 7 kills vs. Pepperdine (2-4). --He had a match-best 17 kills (hitting.333) with 3 blocks vs. Penn State (2-12). 2005 USC Men s Volleyball Page 2 2005 USC MEN S VOLLEYBALL NUMERICAL ROSTER No. Name Ht. Killian, the MVP of three of the past four Junior Olympics, arguably was the nation s top recruit last year out of Loyola High in Los Angeles (Calif.). Also available at outside hitter are 6-3 sophomore Fernando Barron, who saw action in 12 matches in 2004, and 6-5 redshirt freshman Matt Anderson. Sean O Connor, a 6-5 freshman who was a 2004 All-CIF San Diego honoree at La Costa Canyon High in Carlsbad (Calif.), will redshirt the 2005 season. The Trojans could get a boost if 5-10 senior Pedro Leal recovers from off-season kneecap surgery (he could be ready in February). He also had a team-high 113 blocks. The other middle could will be 6-8 freshman Andrew Vernon, a 2004 All-State pick out of Joliet (Ill.) Township West High who was a member of the 2003 U.S. Youth National Team. Vernon currently leads USC's regulars in hitting percentage (.397) and blocks (40). Also available in the middle are 6-9 junior Danny Newman, who saw action in two matches last spring after missing the previous two seasons with a knee injury, and 6-6 freshman Chris Jones, a two-time All-State selection from Washington Park High in Racine (Wis.) who was on the 2004 U.S. Junior National Team.
