The Hoosiers won nine events, including a sweep of the backstroke events from freshman Brooklyn Snodgrass, and wins in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle from Lindsay Vrooman. The Hoosiers Oct. 26 meet vs. Texas and Michigan was shown live on the Longhorn Network. Indiana got solid performances from top to bottom in its lineup in a 175-125 win over No. 18 Notre Dame on Jan. 19. Freshman Brooklyn Snodgrass posted NCAA B cut times in winning the 100 back (54.21) and 200 back (1:56.32). events, winning the 200 free (1:48.58) and 500 free (4:53.33). The Hoosiers got a break-out performance from sophomore Sara Delay. Delay missed the 2011-12 season after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and undergoing surgery. Against the Fighting Irish, Delay won the 50 free (23.37) and finished fourth in the 100 free (51.63). She also anchored the winning 200 medley (1:41.20) and 400 free (3:24.52) relays. In the diving well, Amy Cozad finished second on the 1-meter (301.43) and third on the 3-meter (290.55). Teammate Kate Hillman was second on the 3-meter (311.03) and third on the 1-meter (295.50). This is the second-to-last dual meet of the season for IU as they wind down competition in preparation for the Big Ten Championships. IU will close the dual meet season on Friday, Feb. 1 at No. 17 Louisville. SNODGRASS B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Indiana University swimmer Brooklyn Snodgrass took home Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced Jan. 22. Snodgrass continues to make a name for herself in the backstroke events, winning the 100 backstroke (54.21-NCAA B Cut) and 200 backstroke (1:56.32-NCAA B Cut) as the Hoosiers posted a 175-125 win over No. 19 Notre Dame. Snodgrass also had a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:03.90). SWIMMER RANKINGS Freshman Brooklyn Snodgrass currently ranks 23rd in the 100 backstroke (53.20) and 11th in the 200 backstroke (1:53.97). Junior Lindsay Vrooman is 24th in the 500 free (4:43.35) and sixth in the 1,650 free (15:56.81). HOOSIER OLYMPIANS Indiana women s swimming and diving was represented at the 2012 London Games by two former and one current Hoosier. Former IU diver Christina Loukas (2005-09) represented Team USA on the 3-meter springboard, placing 8th in the final. Recent IU graduate and 2012 All-American Margaux Farrell swam for France, where she took home a bronze medal as a member of the 800-meter freestyle relay team. Current IU sophomore Dorina Szekeres represented her native Hungary in the 200-meter backstroke, placing fourth in her heat and 35th overall. Indiana was also represented in the NBC broadcast booth as former Hoosier diver Cynthia Potter handled diving commentator duties. LIPS MAKES SPLASH AT YMCA NATIONALS Indiana University freshman swimmer Haley Lips was on a record-setting tear at the YMCA National Long Course Championships in Atlanta, Ga., earning two gold medals at the meet this past July. Lips of Middle Tyger club team won the women s 400-meter free in national-record time. Lips recorded a time of 4:17.56 to lower Shelby Fortin s 4:19.65 from 2010. Lips collected her second gold medal of the evening after posting the fastest time in the women s 200-meter individual medley at 2:19.52. LIPS NAMED TO JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM Indiana University freshman swimmer Haley Lips as been named to the USA Swimming 2012-13 Junior National Team. Lips was named to the team in the 200-meter freestyle after posting a time of 2:01.63 at the Olympic Trials this past June. All members of the 2012 Junior Pan Pac team were named to the roster. In addition, athletes with the top six fastest times in Olympic events from the combined results of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, the 2012 U.S. Open and the 2012 USA Swimming Junior Nationals were selected. Lips was also a member of the 2011-12 Junior National Team in the 100 and 200 butterflies. She placed sixth in the 200 freestyle at the 2011 World Junior Championships. PAMMETT COMPETES AT JUNIOR PAN PACS Indiana University sophomore swimmer Cynthia Pammett missed out on the first week of classes last week but for a good reason; Pammett was representing her native Canada at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Honolulu, Hawaii. In the 100-meter backstroke, Pammett placed eighth with a time of 1:03.60. She placed seventh in prelims, clocking in at 1:03.14. In the 100 freestyle she finished 11th overall at 56.47. In the 200-meter backstroke competition, Pammett posted her second top-eight finish, placing eighth in a time of 2:16.47. Pammett was also eighth in the prelim round (2:15.38). In the final day of competition on Sunday, Pammett touched the wall in 2:22.03 in the 200-meter individual medley, good for 13th overall. HUBER, WINGFIELD EARN USA DIVING AWARDS Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber and assistant coach John Wingfield were honored in October 2012 at the United States Aquatic Sports awards banquet in Greensboro, N.C. For the fifth-consecutive year and the 12th time in his career, Huber was given the Mike Peppe Award, presented to the outstanding senior diving coach. Indiana Diving won the overall team title at the AT&T National Diving Championships in August. sport of diving. Until recently accepting a position as assistant diving coach at IU, Wingfield had served as director and head coach of USA Diving s National Training Center. He also spent 10 years coaching at Ball State University prior to moving to Indianapolis in 1998. Wingfield served as the coach of USA Diving s Regional Training Center until 2005, when Indianapolis became the home of the National Training Center and he became director and associate head coach. Wingfield has coached at many international diving events, most notably when he served as head coach of the 2008 Olympic Team. He will serve on the coaching staff at next month s FINA World Junior Championships. HOOSIERS PLACE SECOND AT BIG TENS Indiana fought its way to a second-place finish at the 2012 Big Ten Championships held in Iowa City, Iowa. Competing without some of its top talent, Indiana finished just 29.5 points behind winner Minnesota, tallying a score of 651 points. Senior Allysa Vavra was named the Swimmer of the Championships after a record-setting meet. Vavra defended her Big Ten title in the 200 individual medley with a school and Big Ten meet record time of 1:55.44. She then topped her own Big Ten record in the 400 IM, winning her second-straight title in 4:01.41. Vavra also took third in the 200 breaststroke, breaking her own school mark at 2:08.79. Sophomore Lindsay Vrooman won her first Big Ten title, taking the 1,650 freestyle in 16:00.44. That is the third-fastest time in school history and the first Big Ten title for IU in the event since Jennifer Hooker in 1982. Vrooman also took second in the 500 free. Indiana s 800 free relay team of Brittany Strumbel, Lindsay Vrooman, Nikki White and Margaux Farrell broke their own Big Ten record with a winning time of 7:00.82. Sophomore Brenna MacLean set a new personal best of 1:56.77 in the 200 butterfly, finishing second to earn second-team All-Big Ten honors. She also took fifth in the 100 fly. Farrell was seventh in the 100 free and fourth in the 500 free and picked up first-team All-Big Ten honors for her role on the winning 800 free relay team. Strumbel took second in the 200 free, 10th in the 100 free and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors as part of the 800 free relay team. Freshman Lauren Jordan was a medalist in the 1,650 freestyle, finishing third in a personal best of 16:07.62. She also finished ninth in the 500 free. Freshman Justine Ress finished as runner-up in the 100 back in a time of 53.02. Her season best of 52.92 was set on the 400 medley relay at Big Tens. She also took third in the 200 back (1:54.51). Freshman Allie Day was fourth in the 200 back (1:55.22) and set her season best of 1:54.95 in prelims. Taylor Wohrley posted a top-five finish in the 100 back, taking fifth (53.34). She was also fourth in the 200 back (1:55.22). Junior Ashley Specht was fifth in the 100 breaststroke with her season-best time of 1:00.38. Sophomore Bronwyn Pasloski placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.36), with a seasonbest time of 2:12.04 in prelims. Freshman Dorina Szekeres placed fifth in the 400 IM in 4:13.92 and set a career best of 4:13.26 in the prelims. She also placed 11th in the 200 back (1:57.76). The 200 freestyle relay team of Farrell, Strumbel, Stephanie Armstrong and Ress placed sixth (1:30.85), the third-fastest time in school history. The 400 free relay team of Strumbel, Farrell, Vavra and Courey Schaefer was sixth (3:19.50). Indiana s 200 medley relay team of Day, Specht, Kim Tracey and Armstrong took fifth in 1:38.74, the third-fastest time in school history. The 400 medley relay team of Ress, Specht, MacLean and Farrell finished fifth in 3:34.61, the fourth-fastest time in IU records. Gabby Agostino placed fourth in the 1-meter competition with a season-best score of 331.15. She also finished third on the 3-meter (355.70) and sixth on the platform (282.00). Kate Hillman took eight on the 1-meter (286.80) and was 13th on the 3-meter (299.45) and 21st on the platform (216.05). INDIANA AT THE NCAA MEET The Hoosiers have produced four NCAA champions, two of whom have come in the last four NCAA meets. Kimiko Hirai was the first female NCAA Champion for IU, winning the 1-meter springboard at the 1996 NCAA Championships. Cassandra Cardinell won the NCAA platform title in 2005. Christina Loukas continued IU s strong diving tradition with an NCAA Championship title in the 3-meter springboard in 2009. In 2010, Kate Fesenko became the first NCAA Champion in a swimming event for IU, winning the 200 backstroke. The Hoosiers have posted three top-10 finishes in the last five years (2008, 09, 10) and four overall. Indiana best showing at the national meet came in 2008-09 when it posted 152 points.
