Last night was the home-opener for Delmarva, beginning the 21st season in franchise history in Salisbury. The Suns are the Class A Affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Delmarva leads the season series 3-2 entering tonight s game. TODAY S OPPONENT: Right-hander Jefry Rodriguez takes the hill for the Suns. He was roughed up by the Shorebirds in his first appearance of the season last weekend when he took his first loss of the season. Rodriguez allowed five runs on five hits in just 3.1 innings. He also uncorked a team-high three wild pitches in that first outing. Rodriguez is native to the Dominican Republic and signed as an international free agent with the Washington Nationals in 2012. Last season, he threw just over 111 innings between Auburn and Hagerstown, going 4-10 on the year with a 5.42 ERA. ROSTER OVERVIEW: The 2016 Shorebirds feature an exciting group of talented pitchers, especially in the bullpen. In addition, Delmarva opens the year with each of the Orioles First Round Draft picks last summer in shortstop Ryan Mountcastle and outfielder D.J. Stewart. According to Baseball America, the Shorebirds have five of the top 30 prospects in Baltimore s farm system on their opening day roster. Aside from Mountcastle and Stewart, pitchers Ofelky Peralta (#17) and Garrett Cleavinger (#26), along with catcher Alex Murphy (#27), are among the O s most highlytouted farmhands. PLAYER TO WATCH CHRISTIAN TURNIPSEED RHP Christian Turnipseed has been flat out dominant out of the bullpen so far. In three relief appearances, Turnipseed has allowed only one baserunner. He s tied for the league lead with two saves and is one of only two SAL relievers to have an opposing batting average of.000. WHO S HOT/WHO ELSE WHO S HOT ALEX MURPHY Alex Murphy has hit the cover off the ball in the first eight games of the season. His 2-run bomb on 4/12 lifted Delmarva to a comeback win, and he also had a pair of 3-run doubles in critical at bats during the opening series against Hagerstown. WHO ELSE GERRION GRIM Gerrion Grim has made the most of his opportunities in the 5-man rotation in Ryan Minor s outfield. Grim is 4-10 on the year in four games with a double, 2 RBI and two SB.

Game #9 Delmarva Shorebirds vs. Hagerstown Suns (Nationals) Arthur W. Perdue Stadium MANAGER RYAN MINOR Minor, 42, returns for his eighth season on the Shorebirds coaching staff, and his sixth as the team s manager. In 2015, he led the Shorebirds to 71 wins, the most victories for the franchise since 2009. This is Minor s second stint in Salisbury, having previously managed the Shorebirds for three seasons (2010-12) and spent two seasons (2008-09) as the hitting coach for the Shorebirds. In between, he managed the Frederick Keys (Advanced-A) in 2013. During his tenure as manager of the Shorebirds, the team compiled 302 wins, the most of any Delmarva manager. Minor aided the development of current Orioles, Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop, who played for the Shorebirds in 2011. Minor, a longtime resident of Salisbury with his wife Allyson and two children Reagan and Finley, enjoyed a four-year run in the major leagues from 1998 through 2001. He spent his first three years with the Orioles and his final season with the Montreal Expos. Minor s playing career is best remembered for replacing Cal Ripken, Jr. at third base on September 20, 1998 when the consecutive games streak of 2,632 came to a close. The Orioles drafted Minor in the 33rd round of the 1996 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma. In 1997, he played for Shorebirds and was an SAL All-Star third baseman. He batted.307 with 24 home runs and 97 RBIs. Minor still owns the franchise single season records for doubles (42). Minor also owns a decorated college basketball career. He is seventh all-time in scoring at Oklahoma with 1,946 points. He was selected in the second round (32nd overall) of the 1996 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
