RANKINGS USC is tied for fourth in the current Bison/AVCA Division I-II poll, while Pepperdine is third. It is USC's highest national ranking since being tied for fourth in the March 13, 2001 poll. OPPONENTS USC trails in its series against Pepperdine, 53-33. But the Trojans won the last meeting, a 3-2 victory in 2008 in Malibu (it was Troy's first victory at Pepperdine since 1999, snapping a 9-match losing streak there). LAST MATCHES Tony Ciarelli, Murphy Troy and Austin Zahn all posted double figures in kills to lead No. 6 USC to a 30-22, 31-29, 30-23 sweep over No. 3 Stanford in the Trojans MPSF opener on Jan. 23 at home. Ciarelli had a match-best 16 kills while hitting.481. Troy added 14 kills with a.571 hitting pace and Zahn had 13 kills (hitting.455) with a match-leading 5 blocks. Luke Morris recorded a matchhigh 14 digs and did not have an error on 26 reception attempts. The Trojans hit.371 overall (including.400-plus in the first and third games) to Stanford s.230 and they also had more digs (35 to 22). USC started quickly in the first game, building a 3-0 lead, and then slowly pulled away while hitting.423 to Stanford s.156. The Trojans gradually crept back from a 5-1 deficit in the second game, which finished on consecutive kills by Troy. The third game saw the Trojans again fall behind early, this time down 5-2, only to pass the Cardinal at 12-11 and then eventually pull away by hitting.484 in the game that ended on a combo block by Zahn and Sean Dennis. Then on Jan. 24, Troy had a matchhigh 13 kills while hitting.455 to lead USC to a 30-13, 30-22, 30-25 sweep over Pacific in a MPSF home match. The 60 total points scored by Pacific were the fewest allowed by USC in a 3-set match since the rally score era (30-point sets) began in 2001. The previous low was the 63 points recorded by Hope International just 2 matches ago this year. Pacific s 13 points in the first set were the least given up by the Trojans in a 30-point set since UC Santa Cruz scored 12 in 2003. It was also the least ever against USC by an MPSF opponent in the rally score era. Ciarelli added 10 kills for the Trojans, Morris had a match-leading 9 digs and Zahn had 8 kills and 3 aces. USC hit.333 overall to Pacific s.043 and the Trojans had more digs (37 to 21) and aces (8 to 2). But the Tigers outblocked USC, 7.5 to 5. USC jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set and steadily extended the margin while hitting.333 and serving 5 aces (Pacific had just 4 kills in that set). The second set see-sawed until the Trojans opened up a 17-13 edge and they pulled away by hitting.516 and getting 16 digs. USC broke open a 9-9 tie in the third set by scoring 4 of the next 5 points and wasn t threatened the rest of the way. USC MEN'S VOLLEYBALL 4 NCAA Championships 11 Final Fours 12 Olympians 19 All-Americans 4 College Players of the Year HOT FALL The 2009 USC team captured a pair of pre-season tournaments, first winning the Can-Am Challenge by going 4-0 against top Canadian colleges (becoming the first NCAA team to go undefeated in the tourney since 2003) and then claiming the Hawaii Fall Tournament with wins versus Hawaii and BYU.

2009 SUPERLATIVES The Trojans are off to their best start since 2000 (when they also began 5-1) and their current 5-match winning streak is their longest since a 6-match string in 2001...The 60 total points scored by Pacific in USC's Jan. 24 victory (30-13, 30-22, 30-25) were the fewest allowed by USC in a 3-set match since the rally score era (30-point sets) began in 2001. The previous low was the 63 points recorded by Hope International just 2 matches prior to that Pacific match...pacific s 13 points in the first set of that match were the least given up by the Trojans in a 30- point set since UC Santa Cruz scored 12 in 2003. It was also the least ever against USC by an MPSF opponent in the rally score era...usc's No. 4 (tie) national ranking in this year's Jan. 26 poll is its highest since a No. 4 (tie) ranking on March 13, 200...USC's No. 6 national ranking in this year's Jan. 12 poll was its highest since a No. 5 ranking on March 20, 2001. LAST YEAR In 2008, USC posted its most overall and league wins since 2001 and its first back-toback appearances in the MPSF tournament since a 3-year streak from 1999 to 2001. USC was 13-16 overall and 10-12 for eighth place in the MPSF. The Trojans swept UCLA (ranked fifth and fourth going in), the first time USC defeated the Bruins twice in a row since 1991 and the first time since 1990 that USC recorded consecutive wins at Pauley Pavilion. And USC had a 5-game victory at No. 5 Pepperdine (USC's first victory in Malibu since 1999, snapping a 9-match losing streak there). RETURNERS Fifteen players returned from the 2008 USC squad, including 5 starters (outside hitter Murphy Troy, middle blockers Hunter Current and Austin Zahn, libero Luke Morris and opposite hitter C.J. Schellenberg). In all, 9 players on the roster have started a match in their careers entering 2009. But the Trojans are young, as 17 of the 23 players are underclassmen (including 9 freshman) and there are only 3 seniors. Several cornerstones from last year s squad outside hitter Juan Figueroa, setter Jimmy Killian and middle blocker Andrew Vernon, each a 4-year starter have graduated. Respectively, they own the USC rally scoring era career records for kills (1,627), assists (4,820) and blocks (362). Figueroa was a 2-time All-American second teamer, Killian was a 3-time USC captain and Vernon hit.399 in his career. VOLLEYBALL SCHOOL Besides the 4 NCAA crowns (1977-80-88-90) that USC s men have won, the Women of Troy have captured 6 national volleyball titles. USC s women won the AIAW trophy in 1976, 1977 and 1980, and the NCAA crown in 1981. Then, coach Mick Haley s 2002 and 2003 Women of Troy squads captured the NCAA titles. 2009 USC Men s Volleyball Page 2 2009 USC MEN S VOLLEYBALL NUMERICAL ROSTER No. Name Ht. Wt. Pos. Yr. In 2008 in his second season at Troy, he led USC to its most overall and league wins since 2001 and its first back-to-back appearances in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament since a 3-year streak from 1999 to 2001. USC was 13-16 overall and 10-12 for eighth place in the MPSF. And his squad had a 5-game victory at No. 5 Pepperdine (USC's first victory in Malibu since 1999, snapping a 9-match losing streak there). In 2007, his first season as head coach, he guided USC to its best season in 6 years. The Trojans had their most overall (12-16) and MPSF (9-13) wins, their highest MPSF finish (eighth) and their first appearance in the MPSF tournament since 2001. USC beat UCLA at Pauley Pavilion for the first time since 2000 and the 3-game sweep was its first over the Bruins since 1991, giving Ferguson a victory in his debut against

legendary UCLA coach Al Scates. Troy also snapped a 12-match losing streak to Hawaii and did so in Honolulu, its first win there since 1999.This is Ferguson s second stint at USC, as he was an assistant for 2 years (1997-98) under head coach Pat Powers. He was one of the nation s most successful junior volleyball coaches and club directors before returning to USC in the summer of 2005. In his 15 years of coaching experience at the club level (Santa Monica Beach Club, Reebok Palisades Club, Los Angeles Athletic Club and Southern California Volleyball Club), he coached teams to 19 medals (including 12 golds) at national championships and the clubs he directed won 31 medals. Among the players he has coached over the years are Olympians Misty May, Brook Billings, Donald Suxho, Gabe Gardner, Jeff Nygaard, Ryan Millar, Brett Winslow and Mark Williams, as well as Brandon Taliaferro and Jimmy Killian. He served as an assistant with the USA Youth National Team in 2000 and 2001. In the summer of 2006, he was the head coach of the 2006 USA Volleyball Men s Junior National A2 team. Ferguson played for Palisades High in Pacific Palisades (Calif.), where he was a member of the 1988 L.A. City championship team. He then took a 2-year hiatus from volleyball. While enrolled at Santa Monica (Calif.) College, he pursued a competitive surfing career. From 1987 to 1991, he was a familiar face on the Southern California collegiate volleyball scene, where he served as a linesman for men s and women s matches. ASSISTANT COACHES There are some changes on Ferguson s coaching staff in 2009. Joining third-year assistant Brad Keller, who serves as the offensive coordinator, are newcomers Chuck Moore and Rocky Ciarelli. Moore, who also was a Trojan assistant in 1999, has coaching experience on the club and AVP levels. He is USC s defensive coordinator. Ciarelli, who is a volunteer assistant, had a noted 27-year career in the high school ranks, including at Huntington Beach High where won CIF titles with the boys and girls teams and also coached his current Trojan freshman son Tony. TROY Headlining USC's returnees is 6-8 sophomore outside hitter Murphy Troy, who is also able to play opposite hitter. The 2008 All-American honorable mention pick has been a starter from the moment he stepped on campus and should contend for All- American first team notice this season. He led USC in aces (35), was second in kills (430) and third in digs (144) last year while hitting.287 and adding 65 blocks. He ranked 19 th nationally in points (4.83) and tied for 19 th in aces (0.34) in 2008. He got his sophomore campaign off to quick start, as he was named the NCAA MVP at the preseason Can-Am Challenge. He has a strong Trojan background, as his uncle and aunt played at USC (and his younger brother has signed with the school in 2010). --He had 50 assists, 4 digs and 3 kills vs. Penn State (1-8). --The Honolulu native had 53 assists, 8 digs and 2 blocks vs. Hawaii (1-9). --He had 59 assists, 5 digs and 4 blocks vs. Ohio State (1-10). --He had 33 assists and 10 digs vs. Hope International (1-16). --He had 50 assists and 6 digs vs. Stanford (1-23). --He had 38 assists, 5 digs and 4 kills vs. Pacific (1-24). CIARELLI Tony Ciarelli, a 6-6 true freshman whose parents played and coached the game, took over Figueroa's outside hitter spot and has played like a veteran. He had an impressive showing in the fall and has an edge to start on the outside. He was a prep All-American second team and All-CIF Division I first team choice at Huntington Beach (Calif.) High last season, then was named MVP of the 2008 Junior Olympics 16-and-Under division and placed second at the FIVB Youth Beach World Championships. --He had 9 kills vs. Penn State (1-8) in his Trojan debut. --He had 10 kills and 5 digs s. Hawaii (1-9). --He had match bests of 10 digs and 5 aces to go with his 12 kills vs. Ohio State (1-10). --He had a match-high 11 kills, plus 6 digs, vs. Hope International (1-16). --He had a match-high 16 kills (hitting.481) vs. Stanford (1-23). --He had 10 kills and 6 digs vs. Pacific (1-24). DENNIS As long as Troy remains on the outside, 6-5 sophomore Sean Dennis will continue to start at opposite hitter. He saw action in 8 matches in the first half of the 2008 season, notching 30 kills and 11 digs. --He had 9 kills and 7 digs vs. Penn State (1-8) in his Trojan debut. --He had 12 kills (hitting.409), 6 blocks and 6 digs vs. Hawaii (1-9). --He had 18 kills (hitting.517) and 8 digs vs. Ohio State (1-10). --He had 5 blocks vs. Hope International (1-16). --He had 6 kills and 7 digs vs. Stanford (1-23). --He had 8 digs and 5 kills vs. Pacific (1-24). OTHERS Other outside hitter possibilities each with various amounts of experience include 6-4 sophomore Tyler Stevens, 6-5 soph Tri Bourne and 6-4 senior Matt Pavlovich. Stevens, whose mother is an assistant for

the Women of Troy, appears healthy now after being bothered by a back injury the past 2 seasons (he saw brief action in 10 matches in 2008 after transferring from Ohio State). Bourne, who struggled through the fall with a sore back, started the last 8 matches of 2008 at opposite hitter, and could also work at that spot again this year. He had 59 kills, 99 digs and 24 blocks in 16 overall matches last spring. Pavlovich has 15 career starts, including 12 times in 2007 when he had 97 kills, 51 digs and 31 blocks. He has played in 49 matches at USC (he saw time mainly as a serving specialist in 2008). He also could play some at opposite hitter. Five other returning players are pushing for playing time. Jon Hackett, a 6-9 junior who is a USC captain along with McKibbin, is an opposite hitter who is also working now at middle blocker. He has appeared in 22 matches in his career. Ian Wright is a promising but untested 6-7 redshirt freshman middle blocker. C.J. Schellenberg started at opposite hitter the last 3 seasons, but the 6-7 senior was hampered throughout this past fall with shoulder and ankle injuries that could limit him this spring. In his career, he has 827 kills, 294 digs, 191 blocks and 57 aces. He was third on the Trojans in kills (198) and aces (19) in 2008, and also had 72 digs and 42 blocks. Then there are redshirt freshmen Brad Keenan, a 6-4 libero who sat out 2008 with a knee injury, and 5-11 setter Vince Altamura, whose siblings played at USC. The play of junior college transfer Matt Knutson, a 6-5 junior outside hitter from Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa (Calif.) who also played at Irvine (Calif.) Valley College, has attracted Ferguson s attention and he could battle for action this spring. --Stevens came off the bench vs. Hope International (1-16) to get 10 kills (hitting.533) and 3 blocks, Pavlovich had 4 kills and Hackett had 2 kills. OTHER FRESHMEN Beside Ciarelli, there are 5 true freshmen who are challenging to get into the playing rotation: 6-7 Steven Shandrick, who was a 2008 prep All-American second team and All-CIF Division I first team selection at Santa Margarita High in Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) in addition to being a 2- time Junior Olympics All-Tournament team member, could be the first middle off the bench. 6-3 Jeff Carlson might be the backup setter. He earned prep All-American second team and All-CIF Division II first team honors at Corona del Mar (Calif.) High last season and teamed with Ciarelli to win the silver medal at the 2008 FIVB Youth Beach World Championships. 6-5 opposite hitter Tucker Peleuses, a 2008 prep All-American first team and All- CIF Division I first team honoree at Newport Harbor High in Newport Beach (Calif.), is rounding into form after being slowed in the fall with a thumb injury. 2009 USC Men s Volleyball Page 4 6-6 Steven Mochalski, a promising outside hitter, was the Co-MVP of the All- CIF Division I first team and was a prep All- American first teamer at 2008 CIF Division I titlist Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach (Calif.). His father started on UCLA s 1982 NCAA championship team. 6-1 Clay Knapp, a 2-time All-CIF Division II second teamer at Laguna Beach (Calif.) High, is a developing libero. --Shandrick had 4 kills vs. Hope International (1-16), while Carlson added 7 assists. REDSHIRTS Two Trojans will redshirt in 2009: 6-4 sophomore middle blocker Jimmy Hirschmann, who is recuperating from shoulder surgery, and 5-10 soph libero Andrew Pizula, who transferred to USC after playing at 2008 junior college state finalist Orange Coast College.
