Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail Ralph Waldo Emerson This book is dedicated to the young men and their families that have given so much to their high school, this baseball program, and our community. We have shared your joys and your sadness. We have appreciated your efforts on the field and off. Your hard work and dedication to Blythewood Bengal Baseball did not go unnoticed and will serve as a trail for future generations of Bengals to aspire to. Thank You to all Bengals past and present! If there are any questions or comments, please direct them to: rjohnson@richland2.org

Bengal History 2006 Season Review After opening the school on August 5, 2005, the Blythewood Bengal baseball team took the field for the first time in the spring of 2006. The Bengals got off to a rocky start at the Michelin Pre-Season Classic, losing the first three games and then defeating Brookland-Cayce in the final game of the tournament to earn their first-ever varsity victory. After the pre-season tournament the Bengals caught fire, winning 14 of 16 regular season games. By defeating A.C. Flora on March 25th, the Bengals claimed a share of the Region III-AAA Championship. After serving as one of the hosts for the 2006 Sandlapper Spring Break Tournament where they went 2-1, Blythewood competed in the playoffs for the first time. After losing to Greer at home in the opening game, the Bengals defeated South Pointe and Greer to earn a District III Championship match-up with Riverside. The Warriors proved to be too much for the Bengals, defeating them in the first game. Riverside would go on to win the 2006 State Championship. Senior Alex Lee was selected to play in the 2006 North Carolina-South Carolina Select All-Star Game where he won MVP honors for the South Carolina squad. Lee became the first Blythewood student-athlete to sign a college scholarship when he accepted an offer to play baseball for Clemson University in the Fall of 2005. 2007 Season Review The Bengals started their second varsity season at the Michelin Pre-Season Classic, winning two of their four games. Like 2006, Blythewood had a very successful regular season, winning 13 of 16 games. Unfortunately for the Bengals, they were not able to defeat eventual state champion A.C. Flora. After falling to the Falcons twice in the regular season, the Bengals earned second-place in the region with a 12-2 Region III-AAA record. For the first time, Blythewood participated in A.C. Flora s spring break tournament, the Forest Acres Classic. After dropping the first two games of the tournament, Blythewood rebounded to defeat North Augusta, the AAAA runner-up in 2007, and White Knoll to finish 2-2 for the week. For the second-consecutive year, the Bengals were paired with the Greer Yellow Jackets in the District Round of the AAA State Playoffs. The Bengals opened the playoffs by defeating Seneca in the opening game. After losing to Greer in the second game, the Bengals returned home to eliminate Camden. The Yellow Jackets would defeat Blythewood in the first game of the District II Championship to finish the Bengals season. Senior Legare Jones was selected as a North-South All-Star and represented Blythewood in the All-Star weekend in Myrtle Beach. Jones signed a scholarship to continue his baseball career at The Citadel.

Bengal History 2008 Season Review Depending on the veteran leadership of four seniors, the 2008 Bengals compiled the best season in the school s short history. Blythewood compiled a 20-4 regular record, starting with three wins at the 2008 Michelin Pre-Season Classic. The Bengals continued to roll into their region schedule, winning 12 of 14 region games to clinch second place in Region III-AAA. Spring Break took Blythewood to Hartsville, SC where they competed in the 2008 Southeastern Baseball Classic. After dropping the first game to nationally-ranked Paul VI (Va.), the Bengals scored 43 runs in their next three games to clinch third-place in the tournament. The Bengals continued their outstanding play in the District Round of the 2008 State Playoffs. Blythewood clinched the District II Championship by defeating J.L. Mann and Berea in the opening round. The first round of the Upperstate Championship Bracket saw the Bengals defeat Riverside, the 14th ranked team in the country. Blythewood dropped a heart-breaking game to A.C. Flora in the next game, forcing a rematch with Riverside. After defeating Riverside for the second time in five days, Blythewood traveled to A.C. Flora needing to win two games to claim the Upperstate Championship. After defeating the Falcons in the first game, the Bengals fell to Flora in the second contest. Senior Richard Mounce was selected to the 2008 North Carolina-South Carolina Select All-Star Game. Mounce signed a scholarship to play baseball at Clemson University. Dwayne Addy signed a scholarship to play at Limestone College and Caleb Brazell signed a scholarship to play at Presbyterian College. 2009 Season Review The Bengals started their 2009 campaign with a bang, finishing in second place in the 2009 Red Bank Invitational Pre- Season Tournament, losing to White Knoll in the championship game. 2009 marked the first season Blythewood competed in the AAAA classification. The change in classification and region allowed for the school s first-ever match-up against rival Ridge View, with each team winning their home contest. Blythewood was once again invited to the Forest Acres Classic, A.C. Flora s spring break tournament. The Bengals found themselves in a familiar situation, once again facing White Knoll for the tournament championship. Unfortuately for Blythewood fans, the result was similar to the pre-season tournament. The Bengals finished the region schedule with a 6-4 record, good enough for their first-ever berth in the AAAA State Championship Playoffs. The Bengals dropped their first game at Northwestern in the playoffs before eliminating Easley on the road. Northwestern was able to hold on for a 2-1 victory in the re-match, ending Blythewood s season at 16-11. Blythewood seniors Daniel Andreu (USC-Sumter), Michael Hanzlik (Gardner-Webb), and Will Smith (Francis Marion) graduated to continue their careers on the collegiate level. Blythewood All-Star Players South Carolina Select Team Alex Lee (2006) Richard Mounce (2008) Grayson Greiner (2011) North-South All-Star Legare Jones (2007)

Bengal History 2010 Season Review With only two seniors on the squad, the 2010 Bengals took the field at the Red Bank Invitational Pre-Season Tournament with a lot of questions to answer. After a 2-2 finish in the tournament, many of the questions carried over to the regular season. The Bengals dropped a lot of close games early in the season, particularly region games to Spring Valley and Rock Hill. Eleven games into the season, Blythewood was 4-7, but had lost four one-run games. The Bengals played in the 2010 Sandlapper Spring Break Tournament. After defeating Fairfield Central easily, the Bengals were unable to find a way to defeat Airport or Brookland-Cayce on their home fields. Blythewood finished the regular season with a 6-4 record in region play, good enough for third place. The experience of playing close games with playoff-caliber teams would pay off as the Bengals defeated Gaffney and Wren on the road to claim the District I Championship. Blythewood made it all the way to the Upperstate Championship Game before falling to Byrnes. The Bengals used the heroic playoff run to avoid becoming the first Blythewood team to finish with a record below.500. Entering the playoffs with a 11-12 record, Blythewood finshed the season with a 16-15 record and played for a chance to represent the Upperstate in the State Championship Series. 2011 Season Review The momentum and expectations from the playoff run of the 2010 Blythewood team carried the Bengals to a strong start to the 2011 campaign. After dropping a season-opening game to rival Spring Valley, Blythewood traveled to Georgetown, SC to compete in the prestigious International Paper Baseball Classic. Blythewood won the AAAA division by defeating Dorman, Byrnes, and Wando, before falling to St. James in the Championship Game. The Bengals went on to win their next seven games after the tournament to help secure the first outright region championship in school history. Blythewood finished the regular season with a 11-1 record in Region IV-AAAA play. Before the playoffs, the Bengals hosted the first spring break tournament in school history. Blythewood dropped their second game of the South Carolina Diamond Invitational to eventual champion South Aiken. The Begnals finished third in the tournament. Because of winning the region championship, Blythewood was able to have home-field advantage in the district round of the state championship playoffs. The Bengals defeated Lancaster and J.L. Mann twice to secure the District IV Championship. Blythewood defeated Northwestern in the first game of the Upperstate Championship round before falling to Byrnes and Easley. Senior Grayson Greiner was selected to the South Carolina Select team to play in the South Carolina-North Carolina All-Star Challenge in Myrtle Beach. Greiner (South Carolina) and Daniel Young (Spartanburg Methodist) each signed scholarships to continue their baseball careers at the collegiate level.
