2010 GAME SUPERLATIVES REVIEW WEEK 1: Saints 14, Minnesota Vikings 9; September 9, 2010 @ Louisiana Superdome The Saints won a club record third consecutive season opener as a consistent performance on offense, defense and special teams carried New Orleans in the NFL s kickoff performance. QB Drew Brees highlighted the Saints performance as he completed 27 of 36 attempts for 237 yards and a TD. RB Pierre Thomas had a team-best 71 yards on 19 carries with his one-yard TD run in the third quarter giving New Orleans the lead for good. Brees connected on completions with nine different Saints led by WR Marques Colston s five receptions for 62 yards. RB Reggie Bush chipped in with five catches for 33 yards. The Saints out-gained the Vikings, 308 to 253 yards, and held the ball for 33:43 in time of possession as they scored their fewest points in a winning effort since Sean Payton became coach in 2006. New Orleans got out to a early 7-0 lead, but then saw that evaporate in the second quarter until Thomas one-yard scoring run in the third stanza to put them back up for good. The Saints defense displayed their mettle, allowing only 253 yards of offense by the Vikings and held Minnesota to 5-of-13 on third downs (38%). LB Jonathan Vilma had a second quarter interception of Vikings QB Brett Favre, while DT Sedrick Ellis sacked him. Favre finished 15-of-27 passing for 171 yards and one interception for a 71.7 passer rating. Vilma recorded an interception on a play where a pressure on Favre was credited to S Roman Harper. The win improved their opening day record to 16-28. This was the first time in club history the Saints have won three consecutive season openers. The Saints are 4-1 in season openers under Payton. The 14 points scored were the fewest by the Saints in a winning effort since Payton became head coach in 2006, and the fewest in a win since defeating Dallas 13-7 on Dec. 28, 2003 in the Superdome. Brees and WR Devery Henderson connected on a 29-yard TD on a third down play on New Orleans first offensive drive for the Saints first points of the season. DT Remi Ayodele blocked an extra point in the second quarter. It was the first extra point blocked by the Saints since DT Grady Jackson at Cincinnati on Dec. 22, 2002. WEEK 2: Saints 25, San Francisco 49ers 22; September 20, 2010 @ Candlestick Park The Saints posted an impressive road victory behind timely plays by the arm of Drew Brees, the foot of Garrett Hartley, who booted a 37-yard game-winning field goal as time expired and four forced turnovers by the defense and special teams unit. The Saints scored nine early first quarter points. On the first drive, the 49ers had the ball on their 15-yard line on third and five when the ball flew over San Francisco QB Alex Smith s head and fell out the back of the end zone for a safety. New Orleans then capitalized on the ensuing possession fro the safety and drove 46 yards on seven plays to cap it off with a six-yard touchdown pass from Brees to RB Reggie Bush. Leading 9-7 at halftime, 49ers RB Anthony Dixon ran for a two-yard touchdown to give the 49ers a 14-9 edge. The Saints responded when Brees fired his second score of the game on a three-yard pass to TE David Thomas with 1:43 remaining in the quarter. Taking advantage of a 43-yard punt return by Bush to end the third quarter, Hartley kicked the first of his three fourth quarter field goals to put the Saints up 19-14. Later on, WR Courtney Roby recovered a muffed punt on coverage, setting up another field goal to give New Orleans a 22-14 edge. San Francisco RB Frank Gore ran for a TD and Smith connected with 49ers TE Vernon Davis for a two-point conversion with 1:19 left, but Brees took advantage of the time to engineer the game-winning drive. Brees completed 28 of 38 passes for 254 yards with two TDs for a 108.9 rating. RB Pierre Thomas led the Saints in rushing (46 yards) and receiving with eight catches for 57 yards. WR Marques Colston had a team-high 67 yards receiving on five grabs, including an acrobatic 30-yard catch to set up the game-winning field goal. The defense forced Smith to throw interceptions to S Roman Harper and CB Tracy Porter in Saints territory. LB Jonathan Vilma had a game-high ten tackles and his forced fumble, which was recovered by S Malcolm Jenkins to avert a potential 49ers score. The win marks the first time the Saints have started 2-0 in two consecutive seasons. It extended their win streak against their former NFC West rivals to six games. Brees had a streak snapped of an NFL record five consecutive games with 300 or more yards passing on Monday Night Football. Head Coach Sean Payton improved his record on Monday Night Football to 6-2.

2010 GAME SUPERLATIVES REVIEW WEEK 3: Atlanta Falcons 27, Saints 24 (OT); September 26, 2010 @ Louisiana Superdome Atlanta K Matt Bryant kicked a 46-yard field goal with 1:55 left in overtime to give the Falcons a 27-24 win. The Saints overcame three turnovers and a three-point fourth quarter deficit to tie the score on their final drive of regulation when K Garrett Hartley kicked a 32-yard field goal. However, in overtime, after the Saints defense stymied Atlanta s first drive, Hartley missed a 29-yard attempt and the Falcons would successfully execute their next time down the field. QB Drew Brees completed 30 of 38 passes for 365 yards with three TD passes, two to WR Lance Moore and two interceptions. Moore had a career day with six receptions for a career-high 149 yards, tying his best in TD grabs and adding a career-long 72-yard punt return to set up a first quarter scoring throw from Brees to TE Jeremy Shockey. Shockey led the Saints in receptions with eight catches for 78 yards. DE Will Smith and DT Sedrick Ellis recorded one sack apiece. LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar led New Orleans with a career-high 13 tackles. Atlanta QB Matt Ryan completed 19 of 30 passes for 228 yards with two TDs. TE Tony Gonzalez had eight receptions for 110 yards with one TD, while RB Michael Turner carried 30 times for 114 yards with a TD. The loss snapped a streak of six consecutive September wins for the Saints, dating back to 2008. For the third straight game, the Saints scored a TD on their first possession. Dating back to the 2009 opener and including the playoffs, the Saints scored on their first possession 13 times (10 TD, 3 FG) in 22 games. Brees first-quarter interception was not only the first turnover committed by the Saints in 2010, but the first in 15 quarters, dating back to the second quarter of the 2009 NFC Championship. The pick was his first in 243 attempts, counting the postseason, his first in his last 141 regular-season throws. His last interception came in Week 15 of 2009 vs. Dallas. WEEK 4: Saints 16, Carolina Panthers 14; October 3, 2010 @ Louisiana Superdome The Saints posted an impressive win behind a powerful run game, timely third down conversions, a relentless pass rush and some key plays on special teams in a contest which wasn t decided until the final seconds. On their first drive, the Saints drove to the one yard line, where WR Lance Moore fumbled on a hard hit and it was recovered by Panthers LB James Anderson in the end zone for a touchback. But the Saints got the ball back after forcing Carolina to their first of two first half three and outs on a day where they constantly harassed rookie QB Jimmy Clausen, allowing him to complete only 11 of 21 passes for 146 yards. On their next drive, QB Drew Brees directed a six-play, 76-yard scoring march, ending with Moore rambling into the end zone on a four-yard TD grab. However, the Panthers tied the score on a 55-yard pass from Clausen to RB Jonathan Stewart. New Orleans took the lead near the end of the half, when K John Carney, starting his third Saints stint, kicked a 32-yard field goal. The Panthers took the lead on their first drive of the second half, when RB DeAngelo Williams had a 39-yard run. Failing to convert a third down on their next drive, New Orleans was forced to punt, but a hard hit on coverage by LS Jason Kyle forced Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn to cough up the ball and it was recovered by WR Courtney Roby at the Carolina 29. Carney kicked a 32-yard field goal to put the Saints within one. Brees engineered an 18 play, 86-yard drive, that took up 9:25 of the fourth quarter and ended with Carney kicking a 25-yard field goal to give New Orleans the lead with 3:55 left. Carolina on their final drive, marched as close as the New Orleans 36, but their hopes ended when the Saints pushed them out of field goal range on successive plays with S Usama Young tackling Williams for a four-yard loss and S Malcolm Jenkins sacking Clausen before a final incompletion. Brees completed 33 of 48 passes for 275 yards with one TD as the Saints ran up 121 yards on the ground and outrushed Carolina s powerful attack. BUCKING THE ODDS Players whose names are not called in the NFL draft typically face challenging odds in sticking on a team. Yet, the Saints feature 11 players on their roster who have bucked convention, several becoming key contributors. Seven of the most notable undrafted alumni on the Saints roster are Moore, Ayodele, Dunbar K Garrett Hartley, RB Pierre Thomas, CB Jabari Greer and RB Chris Ivory. Thomas has provided a significant impact to the run game. Signed after the 2007 draft, leading the club in rushing in 2008 and 2009, scoring a club-best 20 TDs over that span. Signed by New Orleans at midseason in 2008, Hartley has made 32-of-38 field goal attempts, as well as nailing the game-winning kick in the NFC Championship and being the only kicker in Super Bowl history to make three attempts of 40 yards or more. A 2004 undrafted signing by Buffalo out of the University of Tennessee, Greer has developed into one of the NFL s elite pass defenders. Signed to a four-year contract in 2009, Greer has recorded three interceptions and 18 pass defenses in 16 regular season appearances, often charged with the task of covering the opposition s top wideouts. Signed as a free agent out of NCAA Division II Tiffin following the 2010 NFL Draft, Ivory has appeared in seven games for New Orleans with four starts and is their leading rusher with 78 carries for 382 yards (4.9 avg.). The Towson product has continued adding strength and working on technique in the offseason as he continues to line up against many of the NFL s elite pass rushers in 2010 in his second campaign as a starter. LG Carl Nicks - This 6-5, 343 pound mauler who was a 2008 fifth-round draft choice, needed very little time to make a smooth transition to life in the NFL trenches. Selected for All-Rookie honors by several publications, Nicks has opened every contest since the fourth of his first year and combines with Jahri Evans for one of the NFL s top young interior combinations. C Jonathan Goodwin - Goodwin took the starting reins of the club s center position in 2008 and has distinguished himself in pass protection, run blocking and making line calls, opening 40 games in the middle of the offensive line over the past four seasons. He s coming off a standout 2009 campaign where he was recognized with a Pro Bowl selection for the first time in his nine-year NFL career. RG Jahri Evans - The 2006 fourth round draft choice has made a rapid ascent from his small school roots at Bloomsburg into one of the NFL s top right guards. Evans was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2009 as a starter, elected a starter. His 73 straight starts with the Saints is the longest streak in team history among offensive linemen to begin a career and tied with linemate and RT Jon Stinchcomb as the most by a current Saint. Evans streak of consecutive starts to begin a career is ranked third overall among all players in Saints record books. Re-signed to a seven-year contract in the offseason, Evans is expected to be a cornerstone of the line for years to come in New Orleans.

WORTH NOTING ON DEFENSE The addition of defensive coordinator Gregg Wiliams, shrewd moves in free agency and the draft and the return to health of several starters produced an opportunistic, resurgent unit, in 2009, resulting in a improvement to a defense that moved up in the league rankings in several categories, sending two players to the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2001. The improvement has continued into the 2010 campaign as they are ranked third in the NFL in opponent yards per game, first against the pass, while ranking fourth in scoring defense, surrendering 16.8 points per game.
