BOKSBURG ATHLETIC CLUB SNIPPETS NO. 44 WEEK 49 (Thursday December 08, 2011 Wednesday December 14, 2011) NEWS, ROAD, TRACK AND FIELD, MULTI-SPORT, CROSS COUNTRY, SOCIAL, STORIES/ARTICLES ETC, ADVERTISEMENTS and GENERAL. NEWS HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL OF OUR MEMBERS WHO CELEBRATE A BIRTHDAY IN DECEMBER WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS THAT HAVE ALREADY JOINED FOR THE 2012 SEASON Dirk Jansen, Megan Laas, Herma van Rooyen and Steven Steyn, CONGRATULATIONS TO: Rita van Wyk on being the 1 st veteran lady home at the Eagles Muller Potgieter 15km race run from the Voortrekker Momument, Pretoria on Saturday, December 03, 2011. Rita completed the race in 75:32. LOOKING FOR: Walking group in Beyers Park. A potential new lady member is looking for a walking group in Beyers Park. Please let the office know if you walk or if you know of anybody that walks in that area. The lady is prepared to walk either early mornings or late afternoons. Updated information re: Mark and the 94.7 Cycle Challenge. Even though Mark Humphreys wiped out on the 94.7 he still managed to finish the event in a respectable 3Hrs22 minutes and this with concussion. Well done Mark.

END OF YEAR MILE CHALLENGE (AND CHAMPAGNE TASTING OR IS THAT TOASTING?) Guess who pitched for training on Tuesday nite? Jan van der Linde as slim and mean as ever. It was really good to see him. And in the words of a good song: And there we stood talking of days that are gone we recalled the past when 30 40 athletes regularly met on the track on a Tuesday evening. The result was 10 15 Silvers in the Comrades Marathon every year! Guaranteed! Like Jimmy Hill used to say. I close my eyes and can see Frank leading the bunch out for 10 x 400 metres. Shoulder length locks, bronzed shirtless body. Muscled torso and six pack. And then Alison Hay would pass him down the home straight. Those were the days my friend I thought they would never end. The banter, the camaraderie, the friendships but always athletics, the common goal. And, oh, the ladies! Alison, Lucinda, Caroline, Frith, Shelley, the three Townsend girls, Anne, Sarah, Adele, Tuula and many more. (I let Frank think that they were there because of him). Enough, already. See you at the Mile on Tuesday Nite. Hope to see many who have participated in the past 20 years. Even if you only come for a chat and a paper cup of champagne. There is no charge and the Club and the Chairman will provide the champagne. Semper fi (extra cup of champagne to the one who knows the origin). Regards Steve De Bod (Coach) Come on guys come out and take part in this Mile Challenge, you can start the Festive celebrations and get into holiday mode after Tuesday Nite. Editor.

MINE DUMPS ON A SATURDAY MORNING ANYONE? As the great cross-country runner, Willie Maisela, likes to remind us, the world s best road runners get their grounding running cross-country. We are also so often reminded that there are no hills in Boksburg. Well, we have fantastic hills on our doorstep at the Cinderella mine dumps which also offer us a fun cross-country running experience. The mine dumps are an institution in Boksburg and define the history of our city. But they will not be around for much longer. What one does not see from the outside is that they are being sprayed away at a rapid rate, starting from the middle and working out. Fantastic canyons have been created which are quite awesome to see. The views from the top of the dumps are as spectacular, one can almost see into the centre of Jo burg and all the surrounding towns. Every Saturday morning at 6am, a dedicated group of runners, including the great Frank da Ascencao looking after the 4 to 5 minutes per kilometre runners, and Neil Cochran, The Coach, looking after the 6 to 7min/km group, run a route of between 10 and 12kms on the mine dumps, starting at the Farrar Park café in Rondebult Road. So, if you are looking to add some variety to your runs, great hill training and to improve all-round fitness, join us on Saturdays! 1 rose amongst all the thorns, tackling the mine dumps. Well done Amanda.

Map of the mine dump route. OUR WEBSITE Log onto http://www.boksburgathleticclub.co.za/ and follow the links. ROAD Hi Everyone, THE GOLDEN RULE It is that time of year. The END and almost the BEGINNING of a new one. At the end of this year and the beginning of the next, it is normally the time to set ourselves new goals. To set new goals is the easy part. To reach our goals is an entirely different story. But is does not have to be hard. We just have to remind ourselves of the golden rule. WHAT YOU SOW, YOU SHALL REAP. Try as we might, it s impossible to break the Golden Rule. Whatever we put energy into whether it s a thought, a word, or an action eventually it returns to us like a boomerang. My wish is that every single BOKSBURG ATHLETIC CLUB member will achieve their goal in 2012, no matter what it is. Have a Blessed and very Happy Festive Season. Kind Regards Reinette

SOCIAL BRAND NEW SOUND SYSTEM IN THE PUB The Committee and especially the Social Committee would like to thank Mr Pierre Botha of Profile Cut Services (PCS) for his generous donation of a great sound system for the pub. The sound system was put to good use on the night of the Beach Party/Xmas Party when one could hear the Beach Boys music from across the road at the Time Trials. Thank you to Kallie Burger and Louis Liebenberg for setting the system up in the Pub. STORIES / ARTICLES No stories/articles this week.
