SOUTH EAST MARTS HAILSHAM MARKET Primestock report for WEDNESDAY, 5th APRIL 2017 PRIME CATTLE (15) Auctioneer: Roger Waters Miss Jones strikes double top with her pair of homebred Limousin cross heifers taking the best butchers beast and reserve best butchers beast. The best makes the best price 210p per kilo, taken by judge Jason Wareham of Tottingworth Farms. Congratulations to Mark and Jackie Cornwell in selling homebred Simmental cross steers at 190p twice and worthy of mention Leslie Brash s purebred Sussex at 188p. Good cattle and good trade, more wanted next week. CULL COWS (12) Auctioneer: Roger Waters Improving trade continues, great competition around the liveweight ring - we say again many cull cows are worth more alive that they are dead - Mark and Jackie Cornwell takes the Easter Show Best Cow award with their homebred Charolais cross across the bridge at 790 kilos and topping out at 143p ( 1,129.70). Charolais, Limousin and Simmental crosses all sold to feed on at 135p, 127p adn 124p. Excellent demand. CALVES (7) Auctioneer: Rogers Waters Northdown Partnership s consignment sell readily, reared Limousin cross steers to 310 and heifers to 267 and younger part reared Limousin cross bulls sell at 255. PIGS (12) Auctioneer: Roger Waters Q is for quality, P is for Pietrain. Littleworth Farm s Q pigs entire port weight 119p and 116p twice. Robert Jarvis pork weight gilts 118p. Excellent pigs, excellent prices. Crossbred store pigs from Mr. & Mrs J Pedder 32. SHEEP (1237) Auctioneer: Nick Young LAMBS (17) Overall average 262.5p per kilo We are grateful to Friday Street Farmers for supporting the show with their Champion pen at 100 per head (285.7p per kilo) and the reserve Champion at 78 per head (239.3p per kilo). We are told that a Chelsea butcher is selling new seasons lamb carcasses at 2.25 per kilo which makes the Hailsham trade that much sweeter. HOGGETS (545) Overall average 163p per kilo Sad to report the Hailsham trade, in line with other centres, is truly disappointing except for the very best meated handyweights. Our firm advice at present is to sell your hoggets as stores if they are not perfect. The faithful were well rewarded with David Marley from High Hurstwood topping at 88. Great to see a duo of Master Butchers, Tony Fulk and Richard Wood in attendance. Leading prices per head:- D Marley 88, 81, Miss C Bancroft 82, 79, AGL Ainslie 81, AA & M Woolgar 80.50, RJ Verity 80, 79, BD Wheeler 80, RE Jarvis 80, FW & MJ Akehurst 80, CH Morris 79. STORE HOGGETS (518) An out and out flier. Trade was white hot for all store hoggets except the weedy ones
and rams. Just ask anyone who was there, our trade was without equal. We need many more please. N Reader 72.50, 72, A Mitchell 70, BD Wheeler 70, N Dallyn 70, Dunstars Farm 69.50, K Russell 69, GWH Osbourne 68.50, 66.50, R & K Livestock Service Ltd 68, PT Pike 68, Station Farms 67.50, J Worsfold 67, JRV Wheatland 66 (twice). CULL EWES (142) A serious trade. Oh how we yearn for big runs rather than highlights, nonetheless we are not complaining (too much!) trade was wonderful. Again ask anyone in attendance. We are often imitated but never bettered!! D Van Duyne 110, Miss C Bancroft 101, 70, FW & MJ Akehurst 95, J & S Harmer 93, 78, A Barr 85, 72, RH Smith 82, 75, K Axell 76. BREEDING SHEEP (15) A very fast trade to 145 ( 48.33 per life). 10 Texel cross ewes and their Texel lambs already booked in for next week. Many more store hoggets and couples are wanted as there is likely to be a shortfall in supply between finished hoggets and the switch to new seasons lamb. Please let us know what you have.
