Take Charge of Your Digital Footprint is a free presentation for all Seekonk parents and students that will be held on Thursday, March 15 at 7 PM in the Seekonk High School Library, 261 Arcade Avenue, Seekonk. This hands-on workshop will help parents and students understand the benefits of presenting a positive online image on social networking sites such as Facebook and Tumblr - as well as the potential consequences of a negative image. Attendees will learn how to control and monitor one s online reputation, especially when looking toward college or career plans. The evening s presenters will be SHS Library Media Specialist Suzanne Larson, SHS senior Matthew Cavaco and SHS Head of Guidance Christine Whatley. This workshop is free and open to all members of the Seekonk community. Physical Education-Hoops for Heart! We Jump, We Shoot, We Save! Thank you to all those students, families, and friends that participated and donated to the American Heart Association. The students of HMS raised a total of $1053. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States among adults. Child/teen obesity is on the rise which could later contribute to heart disease as well. Consistent exercise and healthy nutrition habits are two ways we call all prevent heart disease. During Hoops for Heart, all Hurley students had a great time participating in half-court basketball games, shooting games, and free-throw contests. Congratulations to 7th grader Wesley Gallishaw for placing 1st in the free-throw contest with 7 consecutive foul shots! Sincerely, Ms. Bouchard & Mr. Smaldone Physical Education Teachers

PTO News The Hurley Middle School PTO will again hold a Snowflake Ball on Friday March 16th for girls and their father or father figures to enjoy a wonderful evening at the Venus De Milo in Swansea. The ball last year was a fun evening for all. Following a sit down dinner and a formal dance lesson the remainder of the night the dance floor stayed filled! The girls and their escorts participated in some table conversation questions and activities on the dance floor for prizes in between dances. There was also a photographer and raffles being offered. It was a nice evening to spend with that special person. Please be sure to turn in your RSVP and deposits by February 10, 2012 to the school office. Year Book Sales Preserve your child s memories of HMS by purchasing a yearbook! The yearbook will contain 60 full color pages from the 2011-2012 school year! All three grades are represented in the yearbook, as well as clubs, sports and activities. Yearbooks are distributed on the last day of school when students are given time for autographs, etc. As a reminder, we cannot accept cash. Also, checks must be made payable to Town of Seekonk. You may also purchase your yearbook online with a credit card via https://ybpay.lifetouch.com

Dates to keep in mind: 200th Anniversary Performance- April 9th Memorial Day Parade- May 26th HMS Band Festival- June 4,5 & 8 Elementary Tour- June 12 From the School Nurse Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a contagious viral illness that commonly affects infants and children in the U.S. and abroad. HFMD occurs most often in summer and early autumn. While there is no vaccine to prevent the disease, there are simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of getting sick. What are the symptoms of HFMD? Symptoms usually begin with fever, poor appetite, malaise (feeling vaguely unwell), and often a sore throat. A couple of days after the fever starts, painful sores can develop in the

mouth. A skin rash with flat or raised red spots can also develop, usually on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet and sometimes on the buttocks. This rash may blister but it will not itch. Some people with HFMD may only have a rash; others may only have mouth sore. Is HFMD contagious? Yes, HFMD is moderately contagious. The disease is spread by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, saliva, fluid from blisters, or the stool of infected persons. People with HFMD are most contagious during the first week of their illness, but they can spread the virus that causes HFMD weeks after symptoms have gone away. It is also important to remember that people who get HFMD and show no symptoms of the disease can still spread the viruses that cause it. Is HFMD serious? HFMD is usually not serious. The illness is typically mild, and nearly all patients recover in 7-10 days without medical treatment. Complications are uncommon. Rarely, an infected person can develop viral meningitis (characterized by fever, headache, stiff neck, or back pain) and may need to be hospitalized for a few days. Other rare complications can include polio-like paralysis or encephalitis (brain inflammation), which can be fatal. Who is at risk for HFMD? HFMD mostly infects children younger than 10 years of age, but older children and adults can also get the disease. Can HFMD be treated? There is no specific treatment for HFMD. Fever and pain can be managed with over-thecounter fever reducers/pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. In addition, individuals should drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration (loss of body fluids). Jill Dumont, RN, BSN School Nurse Indoor Soccer Opportunity Mr. Correia is offering the opportunity for students to participate in an after school indoor soccer club. The club will meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:45-3:45 starting on March 20th. Sign ups will take place during all lunches the week of February 27th. There are not late buses available on these days so rides must be prearranged. Physicals must be up to date, and teams/practices and games will depend on the level of participation once we complete sign-ups. Mouth-guards will be mandatory. All students must be passing all subjects to participate in be in good standing behaviorally.
