SCOUTING FORT WAYNE Fort Wayne is riding a hot streak at 7-0, posting six sweeps over the first seven matches. Pelegrin Vargas leads Fort Wayne in kills collecting 85 through seven matches. Michael Keegan leads the Mastodons in assist with 217, as well as digs with 50, while Richie Diedrich is the team leader in blocks with 24 total. BALL STATE MUNCIE, IN The No. 14 men s volleyball team fell to Ball State 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 17-25, 18-25) in the closing match of the Shondell Active Ankle Challenge at John E. Worthen Arena. Chris Nugent led the Lions in kills racking up 17 on the night hitting at a.289 clip and adding seven digs defensively. Kevin Gear hit a season high.455 recording six kills and a team high six blocks. Luke Braswell and Royce Clemens each had 11 digs with Braswell pouring in 43 assist as well. Penn State also tallied 10.0 team blocks, the second most this season. Penn State (1-2) opened the match with a 19-25 first set loss behind seven team attack errors hitting.207 as a team while Ball State (4-1) committed only two errors and hit.385 for the set behind the arm of Matt Szews. Set two saw the Nittany Lions jump out to a 6-2 lead behind kills from Chris Nugent, Calvin Mende and Kevin Gear paired with two Cardinals attack errors and a service error to open the set. Ball State crawled back to tie it up at 17-17, 18-18 and 19-19 despite committing a game high eight attack errors in the second set. Penn State capped the set and evened the game at 1-1 heading into the break on a kill from Gear. Out of the break it was all Ball State as the Cardinals led from beginning to end of the third set winning 25-17, before taking the fourth set ending the game on a 14-8 run. LAST TIME VS. FORT WAYNE FORT WAYNE, IN The No. 14 men s volleyball team took care of business against IPFW (0-6) in straight sets (25-16, 25-23, 27-25) at Arnie Ball Court. Once again, Chris Nugent led the Lions in kills collecting 13 on the night while hitting.391 and adding two digs defensively to go along with a lone assist. Penn State as a team hit.376 led by Kevin Gear's.800 hitting performance recording eight kills on 10 attempts. Calvin Mende added nine kills hitting.375 adding five digs of his own. Royce Clemens led the team with his 11 digs while Luke Braswell poured in 35 assist. Penn State (2-2) took the opening set 25-16 closing it out on a 14-6 run starting with a kill from Mende and capped with service acr from Jalen Penrose. The Nittany Lions trailed to open the second set but matched the Mastodons point for point before a 7-7 tie slipped to a 10-7 IPFW lead prompting a Penn State timeout. Penn State fought back to tie it up 20-20 and then go ahead and take the set in a close 25-23 score. IPFW made the Lions earn set three. After trailing by four most of the third set, IPFW battled back to tie things up at 20-20. a combined 10 points later the teams were still tied this time 25-25 on a kill from IPFW's Graydon Schroeder. A costly service error from IPFW gave the lead to Penn State as well as the next serve. Calvin Mende made it could as he blasted home a game ending kill to take the set 27-25 and the match 3-0.
