We started off with re-scheduling the Past Director's Ride to Jan 23rd. I know we were all looking forward to Al's ride, but don't be to hasty...it's gonna happen! A few designated officers did dress for the weather and attended the FL Inter-Chapter Officers meeting in Clermont on Jan 2nd. This is where chapters select the dates for their "Keynote Event" and Traveling HOG and some discussion on the Florida State HOG Rally in October. At the chapter meeting those that have volunteered in a staff position over the past few years were recognized with a Letter of Appreciation, in honor of their continued support for our Chapter. A special "Viagra" award was presented to Jerry Green, for keeping it up, when it looked like it was going down during the Christmas Light Ride. We have a lot of rides coming up for the Chapter, and you won't want to miss any of them. The calendar is always one month ahead in conception so if you have ideas please share it and we will try to put it together! We will always have some "hard dates" for events...i.e. Traveling HOG, State Rally. etc...we have several new places to go this year, we will include some overnighters as we did in past years and we will be out there following the Hog motto...ride OFTEN and RIDE SAFE! The mileage contest for the past year, showed some traveling members and the punishment their scoots had to endure. The top three received certificates, with additional gift cards for Space Coast Harley-Davidson in the amounts of $100 for 1st, $50 for 2nd and $25 for 3rd. The top three are, 1st - Tom Pylant, 28,058 miles; 2nd - Bob Zubaugh, 20,503 miles; 3rd- Tim Youngblood15,090. Additionally, the remaining top five members were 4th - Don Stadtler; 5th - Al Boileau (which if you recall for Al, his scoot was down for awhile). Well done to all, you exemplify the true meaning of "Ride Often and Ride Safe". Some basic reminders, always check your bike out before the ride, tire pressure, oil, lights and of course the gas tank should always be full when we start out on a ride. Check the HOG line (321-255-2803) if the weather is questionable. The officers responsible for the ride are in contact before every ride to ensure that we make the best decision based on what we see on radar. In deep sadness, we lost one of members, Barbara Glazar to her fight with cancer on Jan 10th. She will be missed by all who knew her. Feb 7th Lake Okeechobee Ride has been designated "The Barbara Glazar Memorial Ride", which will lead by her husband Road Capt Jim Glazar. Lets show our respects to one of our fallen and ride. Head Road Captain Corner If you check the newsletter early enough: 31 January 2010 Meet at HOG room Space Coast Harley shop 8:00am for structured riding, safe riding, and Road Captains training. Be prepared to listen to various speakers, watch a video or two, do some skills training in the lot, and take a ride (to eat, of course). All this should take most of the day. We plan to have breakfast at Denny s on Palm Bay road near the SCHD shop 7:00am. I m planning on a late lunch. Please have Helmet, eye protection, boot/ankle protection, and leg and arm clothing protection. You should layer for cold to warm weather. Do you know: HOG will reimburse $50.00 for completing MSF or Rider s Edge course as HOG member. The dealership will get a plaque if 12 or more local HOG members attend in one year. Most insurance companies give discounts for advanced training and having audible security alarms on your bike. As a HOG member, you are eligible for $100.00 towing reimbursement per year. I believe that to be a safer rider, you must also be a more skillful rider. Attending advanced training classes will show you what you need to practice to become a more skillful and safer rider. I will be happy to work with anyone on a 1-on-1 basis practicing some of those skills. Call my cell, 321-427-6987. The lot at SCHD isn t used most weekdays after work. Great place for this activity! I am very serious about this, call! Your Head Road Captain - Wayne Thomas From Safety Officer - Bob Parker For those first time riders and a reminder for us all. I. Rider Position and Formation The safest formation is a staggered on, i.e. using a double row, staggered, in one lane of traffic. The two second rule is also advised. This means that there should be a minimum of two seconds between you and the bike directly in front of you. Maintain your position and speed to match that of the group. Side by side riding may look cool, but it is not safe and increases your chances of going down. II. Leader Responsibilities A. The leader should ride at a speed that is comfortable for everyone, i.e. something akin to the speed limit. B. When passing on multi-lane highways (example: U.S.1), the leader should signal the change with his blinker and or hand signal. The group should maintain the staggered formation during the pass maintaining speed. C. On a two lane road with two way traffic, the leader will need to initiate a single file passing formation. The pass should be done when there is room for everyone to complete it safely. D. When possible, group stops should be agreed upon in advance. The leader will initiate the stop (for gas, drinks, etc.). The person leading should use the appropriate hand signals. III. The Stay in One Piece Philosophy A. Assume that the cagers don t see you and ride defensively. B. Be alert in the formation and at all times when riding. C. Watch out for sand, graver, road grease, and stay high in the turns. If you ride with arrogance, you will go down with arrogance. D. Be a courteous and watch out for your brothers and sisters. E. Understand perception time, reaction time, and actual stopping distance. The faster you are going when something unexpected happens, the less time you will have to deal with it. F. Wear reasonable riding gear. If you go down, what you wear will matter. G. Check your bike regularly to make sure that everything is working like it should. H. Make sure that your tires are properly inflated; most tire failures are caused by under inflation. Now let s get in the wind! Bob Parker
