The team is based in San Francisco, Calif., and includes former UH player Nemanja Komar and former Hawai i high school standouts Riley McKibbin and Maddison McKibbin (USC). STREAKS END: With a four-set loss to UCLA, the Warriors saw a pair of streaks come to an end 26 consecutive home wins dating back to 2016 and 24 straight regular season, non-conference wins dating back to 2015. One streak still remains in tact heading into Big West play - 13-match conference home win streak dating back to 2016. STRONG START: Despite suffering its first loss of the season, UH s 7-1 record marks the third consecutive year it has boasted a 7-1 mark through its first eight matches. HOME SWEET HOME: UH s current 12-match homestand marks its longest since an 12-match homestand in 1998. UH has been dominate at the Stan Sheriff Center in recent years, finishing last season with an undefeated regular season home record for the first time since 1988 with an 18-0 mark. In the SSC, Hawai i has an all-time record of 282-126 (.691) and 156-72 (.684) in conference play since 1995. SERVING BOMBS: The Warriors have served 48 aces through eight matches this season. UH s average of 1.78 per set is seventh-best nationally while outside hitter Brett Rosenmeier is fifth individually with 12 aces in 20 sets played (0.60). The junior had a career-best four aces in a win over Barton and has multiple aces in four matches. As a team, the Warriors tallied a season-best 12 aces versus Juniata. NATIONAL LEADER: UH leads the nation in both kills per set (13.37) and assists per set (12.59). Last season, the Warriors finished the year ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. In addition, Hawai i is No. 2 in hitting percentage (.356), No. 6 in opponent hitting percentage (.190) and No. 7 in aces per set (1.78) and blocks per set (2.59). ON THE ATTACK: UH boasts one of the nation s top offenses with an attack percentage of.356. The Warriors hit.400 or better in 4-of-8 matches this season with a season-best.491 against Juniata. UH also hit.479 against USC in the title match of the Texaco Rainbow Warrior Classic MANOA ROOFING COMPANY: Through eight matches, UH is one of the nation s top blocking teams, averaging 2.59 per set, good for No. 7 nationally. Middle blockers Patrick Gasman and Dalton Solbrig both average over 1.00 blocks per set. UH has totaled 10 or more blocks in three matches including a season-best 13 in a four-set win over Barton. LINEUP SHUFFLE: UH s depth has enabled head coach Charlie Wade to experiment with his lineup. In last week s four-set loss to UCLA, reserve outside hitter Colton Cowell sparked the team with five kills, two aces, and three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Austin Matautia also came off the bench and tallied nine kills, hitting.438 in mainly two sets of action. Although the starting lineup has primarily stayed the same, a total of 15 players have seen action this season, including true freshman Gage Worsley (LIB) and redshirt frosh Matt Larson (MB) and Jackson Van Eekeren (S). Junior Mamane Namahoe has started three matches at libero. NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE: In two tournaments this season, setter Joe Worsley has been selected to the all-tournament team in each, including being named the Most Outstanding Player of the Texaco Classic. The junior is also averaging a team-best 2.16 digs per set and had his best offensive performance of his career against Grand Canyon, with five kills in 10 attempts in a straight-set win. NEW POSITION, SAME TERMINATOR: All-American Stijn van Tilburg has not had any difficulty adjusting to his new outside hitter position this season. Last year s Off The Block s Bryan Ivie Award recipient as the nation s best opposite, van Tilburg is averaging a team-best 4.00 kills per set, which would rank No. 2 nationally if he qualified. Van Tilburg was named to the all-tournament team in the Texaco Classic (4.00 kps,.513 hit%) and the Grow the Game Challenge (4.40 kps,.462 hit%). He had a match-high 14 kills (.684) in the Texaco championship match versus USC and had 14 kills (.407) against No. 13 Grand Canyon in the GTG Challenge. HEAD COACH CHARLIE WADE 9th season Alma Mater: CS Fullerton, 1991 In eight years as head coach, Charlie Wade has resurrected the University of Hawai i men s volleyball program and into a national contender. The Rainbow Warriors have made two NCAA Tournament trips in the last three years while the 2017 squad advanced to the national semifinals and tied the program record with 27 wins. Wade has guided UH to postseason play six times, including a trip to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship match in 2017. His teams also reached the semifinal round two other times, including in 2015 when the Warriors earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. That team finished with a 24-7 mark their best since 2003 and finished second in the MPSF standings (18-4) while ascending to the No. 1 national ranking for five weeks for the first time since 2004. During the 2016 season, Wade became the program s third head coach to reach 100 career victories with a thrilling four-set victory over No. 1 UCLA, February 5. Under Wade, UH has regained its title as national attendance leader, with averages of 3,671 in 2015 and 3,794 in 2017. After rebounding from a disappointing 7-20 season in 2012, Wade guided the Warriors back to the postseason in 2013 and not for a controversial call at match point in the fifth set against the Cougars in that quarterfinal match, UH may have pulled off the most improbable upset in tournament history. In 2011, Wade guided the Warriors to their second straight MPSF Tournament appearance and finished fifth in the final league standings. In his inaugural year, Wade led the Warriors to a 19-10 mark and a trip to the MPSF Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003. Prior to Wade s arrival, UH had missed postseason play the previous two seasons and suffered through three straight losing seasons. YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD (AT HAWAI I) OVERALL CONFERENCE Season W L Pct. UH finished last season fourth in the final AVCA poll and third in its final season of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UH s No. 5 ranking was its highest preseason rank since 2007 (4th). A NEW ERA: The 2018 season marks the inaugural year of the Big West Conference, the first Division I conference to sponsor the sport of men s volleyball. UH completed a long history in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation dating back to the conference s inaugural year in 1992-93. Although without an MPSF title, Hawai i played in the championship match four times and represented the league at the NCAA Tournament five times. UH finished with an alltime MPSF record of 321-203 (.613) with two players of the year certificates, three freshmen of the year, and one coach of the year. A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING: UH s 2018 schedule includes six first-time opponents - Juniata (Texaco Classic), Lincoln Memorial and Barton (Grow the Game Challenge), Lees McRae (Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger Classic), and Concordia. UH and Thompson Rivers met in a two-match exhibition series at the SSC in 2014, which each team winning one match. OUTRIGGER MOVES TO MARCH: As one of the nation s premiere men s volleyball tournaments, the 24th Outrigger Invitational moves from its traditional early January time slot to March 8-10. This year field features a star-studded lineup including NCAA Championship participants BYU of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and Penn State of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. UH s match-up with the Nittany Lions on day two of the tournament will mark a rematch of last year s NCAA Opening Round match, won the Warriors in five sets. UH and BYU met three times last season with the Warriors defeating the Cougars in the MPSF Tournament semifinals. Also making the trip to Honolulu is Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association runner-up Lewis. RARE TRIP: UH s appearance in the Grow the Game Challenge marked the program s first regular season tournament outside the state of Hawai i since the 1994 Asics Grand Prix in San Diego, Calif. Last season, UH travelled to the Midwest for matches against McKendree and Lindenwood, its first non-conference road matches since 1996. WELCOME ABOARD: Chad Giesseman has joined the Warrior program as the new volunteer assistant coach. At the prep level, Giesseman has served as boys varsity head coach at McKinley High School since 2001 and held a dual role as girls varsity head coach from 2008-2015. He is also an established coach at the club level, serving as director, founder, and head coach of the Kailua Volleyball Club since 1990. In addition, Giesseman is head coach of the Sport- ConX squad of the Premier Volleyball League. LONE SENIOR: UH s 2018 roster features only one senior - libero/outside hitter Larry Tuileta, a transfer from USC, whose appeal to the NCAA for another year was denied. The Punahou graduate played one full season at USC and participated in the team s fall exhibition matches during his sophomore season. After sitting out the 2016 season, his first full year with UH in 2017 was considered his junior season. REPRESENTING THE USA: Outside hitters Brett Rosenmeier and Austin Matautia, middle blocker Patrick Gasman, and libero Gage Worsley were part of the 12-member U.S. Men s Junior National Team which competed and placed 14th at the FIVB Under-21 World Championship in the Czech Republic. UH had the most players represented on the squad. Libero Larry Tui Tuileta also competed for Team USA at the Pan American Cup in Canada, which took fifth place. ACADEMIC WARRIORS: UH was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as one of just 19 men s collegiate teams to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award for 2017. It is the first time that the Rainbow Warriors earned the prestigious national honor. In addition, five Rainbow Warriors earned MPSF All-Academic honors last season. UH INKS THREE FOR 2019: Three players signed their National Letter of Intent to join the Warriors in 2019 - Cole Hogland, Devon Johnson, and Filip Humler. Hogland of Iolani School is regarded as one of the best players in the state of Hawai i, Johnson, of the Westlake Village High School, he was a member of the gold medalwinning team representing the region of Southern California at the USAV High Performance Championship. This summer, Humler helped the Czech Republic to a seventh place finish at the 2017 Youth World Championship and a European Championship. In addition UH has secured verbal commitments from two additional local players for the 2018 season, continuing in Wade s priority to recruit the state of Hawai i. REGULAR PARTICIPANT: Hawai i has appeared in the NCAA Tournament in two of the past three seasons (2015 & 17) under head coach Charlie Wade. Last season, UH reached the semifinals for the first time in 15 years after defeating Penn State in an opening round match. The Warriors posted 27 wins a year ago, tying the most in program history with the 1996 squad that advanced to the NCAA title match. BEACH BOWS: Brett Rosenmeier and Colton Cowell represented UH at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships, May 11-13 in Hermosa Beach, Calif. The tandem finished in fourth place among a dozen pairs. The tournament was the first stop of the Team USA Summer Champions Series.
