INTRODUCTION 2012 is a very exciting year for Scottish football. The new Scottish FA Strategic Plan, Scotland United - A 2020 Vision, sets out a series of specific goals and objectives to grow and improve the game at all levels. From doubling the number of registered recreational players to getting Scotland to a major final once again, the re-structured Football Development and newly created Performance departments will be extremely busy throughout the year. A series of new programmes for our talented players will be rolled out, and these will be supported by talented coaches. We want Scotland to be known as the home of great coaches and to achieve that, we need to build on the hard work already going on. Speaking of talented coaches, it would be remiss of me not to mention the milestone recently reached by the most successful Scottish coach of all time, Sir Alex Ferguson. He was kind enough to address our Pro Licence course last year, and shared some of the secrets of his success in a very informative Q&A session with the candidates. A wonderful experience for everyone involved. There is a more focussed approach to keep our coaches updated and informed through the now established CPD Programme. We have been fortunate to attract coaches from all over the globe to address out groups at events across the country, we have had guest presenters from The FA and FAI, English Premier League and Champions League clubs, while former Scotland rugby star Gregor Townsend gave coaches a different viewpoint. Our Head of Coach Education Donald Park, will continue to work hard to develop the content in the programmes and seek to attract quality presenters, and build a real coaching community. Jim Fleeting DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT 5

CONTINUOUS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CPD UEFA has issued a recent directive aimed at all member associations regarding the introduction of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for all Scottish FA Licence holders. As a consequence, this coming year will see the implementation of a new Professional Development programme for coaches. UEFA and the Scottish FA requires all new and existing Pro, A, B, Youth Licence and Youth Directors Award coaches to attain a minimum of 15 hours of CPD credit over a three year period to ensure their licence or award remains active. (Note: It is the intention of the Scottish FA to role out CPD for Goalkeeping and Advanced Children s Licence holders in August 2013). The key principle behind this initiative is to ensure that all new and existing licensed coaches, who are actively coaching, have access to the most advanced and cutting edge techniques and information within their area of coaching expertise in the Adult, Youth, Children or Specialist Course Pathways. Whilst the Scottish FA will make every attempt to support coaches to carry out CPD, it is ultimately the sole responsibility of the individual to keep his/her licence/award qualification current and therefore recognised by the Scottish FA and UEFA. Licence holders of existing Adult, Youth and Youth Directors Award qualifications must register their commitment to CPD with the Scottish FA (see Appendix A CPD Registration form). Coaches in this position will have three years from the point of registration to attain the 15 hours CPD. Candidates with both an Adult and a Youth orientated licence must carry out 15 hours of CPD for each licence to ensure they both remain current (i.e a total of at least 30 hours). The Scottish FA will publish details as to how coaches may attain the 15 hours credit. Coaches who have registered will also be contacted with dates, venues and any additional costs of courses. Candidates who register for CPD must pay an initial registration fee of 50 (inc VAT). An additional 20 (inc VAT) subscription fee must be paid thereafter for each year the coach is a member of the Scottish FA Professional Development for Coaches Programme. In the event the three-year period has elapsed and the minimum requirements of CPD have not been met, the licence/award will cease to be recognised and the individual will be required to re-sit the full course. Application for above courses is available on page 20. 19 Please note that places on these courses are issued on a first come, first served basis. Apply to the Scottish FA Football Development Department, Hampden Park, Glasgow, G42 9AY, making cheques payable to The Scottish Football Association, Ltd. Intimation of cancellation on a course member s part for courses must be given in writing and must be received by the Association/Course Co-ordinator at least seven (7) days prior to course commencement. Only in this event will a full refund be issued.
