Hickory is the Class A Affiliate of the Texas Rangers. The Shorebirds ripped off four wins in a row last week, but have dropped their last four straight games since then. Hickory is having a decent second half, currently at.500 since the break. The Shorebirds have lost six of their last eight home games and have fallen to four games under.500 in the second half. Since Delmarva opened the season with a 4-6 mark and lost two of the first three series, they have a series record of 14-7-3 over their last 24 sets, going 49-36 over that stretch. TONIGHT S OPPONENTS: Right-hander Dillon Tate gets the ball for Hickory in the middle game of the three game series. Tate is a highly touted prospect in the Rangers farm system after he was selected fourth overall in the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft out of UC-Santa Barbara. He threw 103 innings for the Gauchos last year, so the Rangers only threw him 9 innings between Spokane and Hickory. This is his first full year of pro ball and he s had moderate success, but his ceiling remains very high. LAST GAME QUICK HITS: The Shorebirds were shut out for the third time in four games on Wednesday night. Reid Love, Mike Burke and Lex Rutledge combined to allow just two runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts, but the offense never got anything going. The Shorebirds had leadoff hits in the eighth and ninth innings which brought the tying run to the plate, but the heart of the order had a rough night. All three pitchers for Hickory - Wes Benjamin, Christian Torres and Joe Palumbo - were left-handers. PLAYER TO WATCH YERMIN MERCEDES C Yermin Mercedes is one of the hottest hitters in Minor League Baseball right now. In 34 games (dating back to June 11), Mercedes has raised his batting average from.321 to.346 by going 48-125 (.384) with 7 HR, 1 3B, 10 doubles and 23 RBI. He has 12 multi-hit games in his last 22 contests. WHO S HOT/WHO ELSE WHO S HOT STEVE LAURINO Laurino was the fortunate Shorebird who had the night off when Delmarva was no-hit earlier this week. That kept his hitting streak and on-base streak in tact, but both were snapped last night. Laurino had hit in 8 straight and reached in 17 in a row. WHO ELSE CRISTIAN ALVARADO Alvarado leads the league with 107 strikeouts. He was recently honored as the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week and the Orioles Minor League Pitcher of the Month.

Costello was the third-to-last selection in the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft when the Orioles took him out of Post University. Costello had also pitched at Radford in his collegiate career, but he became the first ever drafted player out of Post (located in Waterbury, Connecticut). Costello pitched nine games in the GCL last year before joining Delmarva in early June. Tonight will be his 15th professional appearance and his 13th career start. ARSENAL: 2-Seam Fastball, 4-Seam Fastball, Curve, Circle Change LAST OUTING: Costello is coming off of his first win of the season. He allowed a solo home run and a pair of additional run-producing hits all in the third inning of his start against Columbia. Aside from the one inning that got away from him, Costello surrendered just one base hit - an infield single in the first inning. CAREER AGAINST THE CRAWDADS: Costello Makes his second appearance against Hickory. His first start as a Shorebird came on Saturday, June 18th in Hickory and he pitched well. It was the second game of a double-header - with the game one loss (1-0 final score), the Shorebirds had been eliminated from the first half division crown. But that didn t distract Costello from putting together a nice effort, giving up just two runs in 4.1 innings en route to a Shorebird win. 2016 SINGLE GAME STATS PRO CAREER GAME HIGHS Low Runs: 1, twice Innings: 6.0, 6/2616 vs. KAN High Runs: 13, 7/7 vs. HAG Runs: 13, 7/7 vs. HAG Low Hit: 4, twice Hits: 11, 7/7 vs. HAG High Hits: 11, 7/7 vs. HAG Walks: 2, twice Innings: 6.0, 6/26 vs. KAN Strikeouts: 4, five times Most Walks: 2, twice Pitches: 75-47, 7/7/16 vs. HAG Strikeouts: 4, three times Hit Batters: 1, three times 2016 MISCELLANEOUS NUMBERS W L ERA GS IP ER Home 0 1 12.96 1 8.1 12 Road 1 0 3.26 4 19.1 7 Day 0 0 0.00 0 0.0 0 Night 1 1 6.18 5 27.2 19 AVG AB H HR BB SO vs. Left:.327 49 16 1 3 7 vs. Right:.281 64 18 2 3 11 TOTALS:.301 113 34 3 6 18 2016 INNING-BY-INNING Inning ERA IP H R ER HR BB SO AVG GIDP 1 3.60 5.0 7 2 2 0 2 4.350 0 2 10.80 5.0 6 6 6 1 2 2.300 0 3 5.40 5.0 8 5 3 1 1 0.348 0 4 7.20 5.0 6 4 4 1 1 5.316 1 5 13.50 2.2 3 5 4 0 0 3.273 0 6 0.00 2.0 1 0 0 0 0 2.143 0 7 0.00 1.0 2 0 0 0 0 2.400 0 8 0.00 1.0 1 1 0 0 0 0.200 0 9+ 0.00 1.0 0 0 0 0 0 0.000 0 2016 MONTH-BY-MONTH Month Record ERA IP H R ER HR BB SO AVG June 0-0 1.88 14.1 13 4 3 1 2 12.232 July 1-1 7.91 13.1 21 19 16 2 4 6.368 CAREER STATISTICS Season Team W-L ERA IP H R ER HR BB SO 2015 GCL Orioles 1-2 3.19 31.0 33 11 11 0 5 20 2016 Delmarva 1-1 6.18 27.2 34 23 19 3 6 18 Totals 2-3 4.60 58.2 67 34 30 3 11 38 TOMORROW S PROBABLE: Cristian Alvarado is scheduled to throw in the series finale.

Game #97 Delmarva Shorebirds vs. Hickory Crawdads (Rangers) Arthur W. Perdue Stadium MANAGER RYAN MINOR Minor, 42, returns for his eighth season on the Shorebirds coaching staff, and his sixth as the team s manager. In 2015, he led the Shorebirds to 71 wins, the most victories for the franchise since 2009. This is Minor s second stint in Salisbury, having previously managed the Shorebirds for three seasons (2010-12) and spent two seasons (2008-09) as the hitting coach for the Shorebirds. In between, he managed the Frederick Keys (Advanced-A) in 2013. During his tenure as manager of the Shorebirds, the team compiled 302 wins, the most of any Delmarva manager. Minor aided the development of current Orioles, Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop, who played for the Shorebirds in 2011. Minor, a longtime resident of Salisbury with his wife Allyson and two children Reagan and Finley, enjoyed a four-year run in the major leagues from 1998 through 2001. He spent his first three years with the Orioles and his final season with the Montreal Expos. Minor s playing career is best remembered for replacing Cal Ripken, Jr. at third base on September 20, 1998 when the consecutive games streak of 2,632 came to a close. The Orioles drafted Minor in the 33rd round of the 1996 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma. In 1997, he played for Shorebirds and was an SAL All-Star third baseman. He batted.307 with 24 home runs and 97 RBIs. Minor still owns the franchise single season records for doubles (42). Minor also owns a decorated college basketball career. He is seventh all-time in scoring at Oklahoma with 1,946 points. He was selected in the second round (32nd overall) of the 1996 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. SAL TOP DEFENSE: Delmarva s defense has either been superb or costly as the season nears the halfway point. Of the 77 errors the Birds have committed, seven came in the first two games of the year and 57 have come in the last 68 contests. In the other 24 games, Delmarva has tallied just nine errors and 46 total errorless games. RUNS PER GAME: Here is a look at what the Shorebirds have done over the last twelve years.
