The purpse f the United States (U.S.) Numbered Highway System is t facilitate travel n the main interstate highways, ver the shrtest rutes and the best available rads. A rute shuld frm cntinuity f available facilities thrugh tw r mre states that accmmdate the mst imprtant and heaviest mtr traffic flw in the area. The rutes cmprising the Natinal System f Interstate and Defense Highways will be marked with its wn distinctive rute marker shield and will have a numbering system that is separate and apart frm the U.S. Numbered Highway System. Fr the cnvenience f the mtrist, there must be cntinuity and a unifrm pattern f marking and numbering these Interstate rutes withut regard t state lines. The U.S. Numbered System was established in 1926 and the Interstate Numbered System was established in 1956. Bth have reached the perid f review, revisin, and cnslidatin. They nw need perfecting rather than expansin. Therefre, any prpsed alteratin in the established systems shuld be extremely meritrius and thrughly, thugh cncisely, explained in rder that the Special Cmmittee n U.S. Rute Numbering and the Standing Cmmittee n Highways f the Assciatin may give prmpt and prper cnsideratin t each and every request made by a member department.
