Page 2 of 9 The HLYC Burgee flies proudly with the flag Commodore's Comments It is hard to believe, but we are already half way through our sailing season. Our club is off to a strong start in 2013, with several new projects, lots of help and camaraderie among the membership, and many shared sailing experiences to talk about on the deck. During July over twenty members, almost all of us, have shared the burden of several work projects and the joys of sailing together. I want to thank everyone who has worked so hard to make HLYC a better place. So thank you Lee, Andrew, Harry, Alan, JJ, Dick, Gary M., Gary D., Yvonne, Ian, Brad, Chris, Twila, Dave M., Natasza, Dave B., Amy, John, and Jane. The projects completed include cleaning and restaining the deck, repairing the gang plank to our docks, completing the roof on the dinghy storage shed, cleaning and mowing the grounds, reshaping the shore line, spreading gravel to prepare a Hobie Cat beach access, installing steel poles to support our sun shade, repairing both Lasers and the Hobie Cat, plus dock adjustments and maintenance. We have received donations of a sun shade, two grills and two picnic tables, one with an umbrella. Our club will certainly finish the year much improved, with twice as much dinghy dock space, beach access, better shade on our decks, better grills, improved
Page 3 of 9 fire ring area, better signage, burgees flying, and more. We had several occasions in July during which many of our members got out sailing together and gathered around the club to socialize. Our most recent event, the Kirk Seitz Memorial Sail, was a big success. I have more to add about that later in this letter. On the calendar for August we have an upcoming Dinghy Regatta on August 10; the Hebgen Cup Regatta, our signature annual event, on August 17; Lee s Poker Run on August 24; and our first ever Children s Sail Camp on August 30 through September 1. Also on Saturday evening, August 31, we are planning our annual Raft-Up out on the lake. So there are plenty of events left to take advantage of this year. I hope to see you all there in the weeks to come! For 2013, welcome to all renewing members and the following brand new members: Scott and Martha Johnson, Dave McCune and Natasza Wisniewska, Alex and Amy Moldenhauer, Chris and Twila Moon, and Carl Thelander and Kara Duckworth! We now have 23 member families for 2013! We are sorry that the following families have not yet renewed their memberships: Darin Caine, Lindsay Douglas, Gary and Ginna Hermann, Mark and Ody Loomis, Patrick McVey, Capt. Dennis Slaughter, and Walt and Nikki Van Houten. We hope we will hear from you very soon. Your Commodore, Brock D. Short

The Kirk Seitz Memorial Sail On Saturday, August 3, many of us in the Club came together to sail in honor of our lost member, Kirk Seitz, who passed away in March of this year, after a long battle with cancer. Kirk was an original member of our club, sailing in the first two Hebgen Cup Regattas. His participation in the first Hebgen Cup Regatta in 2011, and the conversation that followed, helped Gary McRae and I to believe we had the nucleus to start a yacht club on Hebgen Lake. Kirk was the winter of last year s Hebgen Cup Regatta, and many of us, including his crew and mine, stayed late into the evening celebrating his victory, reliving great moments we had spent upon the water, that day and long before. Kirk never told us he was sick, just that winning the Hebgen Cup was one of the happiest days he had spent in years. I am sorry he is gone. We have lost a good man, and a strong and loyal part of our club. This past Saturday, a total of five boats and fifteen sailors sailed a race course that
Page 6 of 9 began and ended in front of HLYC. Gary Douglas skippered Silvergirl with Lee Griffiths crewing. Ian MacConnachie skippered the Beverly Anne, with crew Odie Mae (his dog) and his friend, Paul Sanden. Dave Broederdorf and Amy Bosich crewed for Gary McRae on Pearl. Brad Lartigue and his guest, Geoff Ader, sailed the length of the course in a club Laser. Jane and I were assisted on Sea-J by Laurita Green, Marie Gary (Kirk s widow), LaRue Seitz (Kirk s daughter), and Erik Dettori (Kirk s grandson, 2). Despite fluky winds, we managed a successful start towards a short weather mark set towards the dam. Ian sailed well and was the first to round the mark, with us second, and Gary McRae a close third. We developed a lead on the long leg to the second mark, though Ian, Gary McRae, and Brad closed the gap as we neared the mark. We caught a strong puff at the mark to break away, and we got back to the club first, but it proved a good boat race for the rest of the fleet, including the Laser. We did not keep exact times or apply proper handicaps, but everyone finished the course, sailed well, and was properly counted as a winner at the gathering that followed back at the club. Everyone who participated received a shot glass trophy, which we filled with bourbon or beer and raised in honor of Kirk. Jane also presented special gifts to Marie and LaRue. Thanks to all who participated and made this such a fun event!
