DETROIT LIONS VS KANSAS CITY CHIEFS GAMENOTES TOM KOWALSKI MOMENT OF SILENCE Following team introductions and prior to today s National Anthem, the Detroit Lions will conduct a moment of silence in the stadium for Tom Kowalski, a Lions beat writer for 30 years. Kowalski passed away Monday, August 29 at the age of 51. A tribute to Kowalski is also included in today s game program. Following his passing, the team named the press area at the team s practice facility in Allen Park the Tom Kowalski Press Room. A portion of today s concessions will be donated to two of his favorite charities, Team Joseph and Our Children s Fund. The team will also start a journalism scholarship of a Lions intern in his honor. HANSON TO SET NFL RECORD Lions K Jason Hanson will set an all-time NFL Record today by playing in his 297th career game, setting the mark for the most games played by a player with one team. ¾Hanson will surpass Houston/Tennessee C Bruce Matthews, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, for the most career games (296) with one team in NFL history. ¾ Among active players, Hanson ranks first with 296 career ¾ With 297 career games, he will move into a tie for seventh with K Matt Stover for the most games played in NFL history. ¾ Last week at Tampa Bay, he tied the NFL mark for the most seasons played by one player with the team that originally drafted them. Turning back the clock ¾ Hanson is one of two players (Saints K John Kasay) in the League that was active the last time the kickoffs were placed at the 35-yard line (1993). During his first two years (1992-93) in the NFL, Hanson registered 60 touchbacks, including 46 in 1993, kicking off at the 35-yard line. Since entering the NFL in 1992, Hanson has registered the most touchbacks (253) in the NFL. LIONS GO STREAKING The Detroit Lions were one of only four teams (only NFC) to end the 2010 season on a four-game winning streak. ¾ With the 20-13 win over Minnesota in the finale, Detroit finished with four-straight wins. The last time the Lions won four consecutive games was October-November 1999 (25-23 vs. Min 10/17/99; 24-9 at Car October 10/10/99; 20-3 vs. TB 10/31/99 and 31-27 vs. StL 11/7/99). ¾ The win over the Vikings marked the first four-game winning streak in December since the team won all four games in December 1995 (27-7 vs. Chi 12/4/95; 24-17 at Hou 12/10/95; 44-0 vs. Jax 12/17/10 and 37-10 at TB 12/23/95). ¾ Years ending 4-game winning streak: 1944 (5), 1953 (6), 1960 (4), 1970 (5), 1989 (5), 1991 (6), 1995 (7) and 2010 (4). ROAD WORK ¾ The win over Miami (12/26), combined with the team s 23-20 overtime win at Tampa Bay (12/29) the prior week gave the Lions their first consecutive road wins since they opened the 2004 season with three straight road victories (20-16 at Chi 9/12/04; 17-10 at Atl 10/10/04 and 28-13 at the NYG 10/24/04). ¾ The road wins in those two weeks are the first road wins in consecutive weeks since October 1993 when the Lions won 16-13 at the Los Angeles Rams (10/24/93) and at Minnesota (10/31/93). ¾ With a win at Miami, the Lions won back-to-back road games in December for the first time since 1991 (21-17 at Green Bay 12/15/91 and 17-14 in OT at Buffalo 12/22/91). ¾ The victory at Tampa Bay (12/19) not only ended the club s 26-game skid on the road, but the overtime win was the club s first road overtime win since the Lions defeated the New York Giants 28-25 October 30, 1994 in sudden death. EXTENDING THE STREAK ¾ With the Lions 27-20 win last week at Tampa Bay, they moved their current win streak to five games, the most since the team ended the 1995 season with seven-straight victories.
