DETROIT LIONS VS KANSAS CITY CHIEFS GAMENOTES TOM KOWALSKI MOMENT OF SILENCE Following team introductions and prior to today s National Anthem, the Detroit Lions will conduct a moment of silence in the stadium for Tom Kowalski, a Lions beat writer for 30 years. Kowalski passed away Monday, August 29 at the age of 51. A tribute to Kowalski is also included in today s game program. Following his passing, the team named the press area at the team s practice facility in Allen Park the Tom Kowalski Press Room. A portion of today s concessions will be donated to two of his favorite charities, Team Joseph and Our Children s Fund. The team will also start a journalism scholarship of a Lions intern in his honor. HANSON TO SET NFL RECORD Lions K Jason Hanson will set an all-time NFL Record today by playing in his 297th career game, setting the mark for the most games played by a player with one team. ¾Hanson will surpass Houston/Tennessee C Bruce Matthews, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, for the most career games (296) with one team in NFL history. ¾ Among active players, Hanson ranks first with 296 career ¾ With 297 career games, he will move into a tie for seventh with K Matt Stover for the most games played in NFL history. ¾ Last week at Tampa Bay, he tied the NFL mark for the most seasons played by one player with the team that originally drafted them. Hanson has now played 20 seasons for the Lions, and he is tied with Hall of Famers T Jackie Slater (Los Angeles Rams) and CB Darrell Green (Washington) for that record. LIONS-CHIEFS SERIES The Lions-Chiefs series dates back to Thanksgiving Day 1971 when the two teams met for the first time with a 32-21 Lions victory in Kansas City. It was the first of four meetings the two teams have had on Thanksgiving Day. In total, the Lions and Chiefs have played 11 times with the Chiefs holding a 7-4 series edge. They last meeting was on Dec. 23, 2007 when the Lions beat the Chiefs, 25-20, in Kansas City s lone trip to Ford Field. HANSON KEEPS KICKING K Jason Hanson is the second longest-tenured active player in the NFL (Saints K John Kasay). 2011 marks his 20th NFL season and he has previously played 295 career With 1 point in today s game ¾ Hanson, the Lions franchise leader in career points scored, will reach 1,900 career points and become the seventh player in NFL history to reach 1,900 career points. He enters the game today with 1,899 career points. With a 50-yard field goal today ¾ Hanson s career tally of 50-yarders will increase to 46. Home Production ¾ Since 2002, the Lions first year at Ford Field, Hanson has connected on 120 field goals, the third-most in the League over the past 10 season. Turning back the clock ¾ Hanson is one of two players (Saints K John Kasay) in the League that was active the last time the kickoffs were placed at the 35-yard line (1993). During his first two years (1992-93) in the NFL, Hanson registered 60 touchbacks, including 46 in 1993, kicking off at the 35-yard line. Since entering the NFL in 1992, Hanson has registered the most touchbacks (253) in the NFL. From 1994-2010, when kickoffs were moved to the 30-yard line (tee was also lowered to 1 inch in 1994), Hanson has recorded the second-most touchbacks (188) during that span. ¾ In the opener last week at Tampa Bay, Hanson kicked off the season by recording 5 touchbacks. It was the fourthmost he has kicked in a single game during his career and the most since the 1993 season. LIONS GO STREAKING The Detroit Lions were one of only four teams (only NFC) to end the 2010 season on a four-game winning streak. ¾ With the 20-13 win over Minnesota in the finale, Detroit finished with four-straight wins. A LOOK BACK TO 2010 In the Lions 2010 home opener, then-rookie Jahvid Best dazzled the Ford Field crowd with three touchdowns (2 rushing; 1 receiving) and 154 receiving yards. ¾ Against Philadelphia (9/19), he rushed for 78 yards and 2 touchdowns and caught 9 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown. Best was the first rookie in NFL history with at least 75 yards, 150 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in a single game. He was also the first player to accomplish the feat since Buffalo RB Joe Cribbs vs. Cleveland 11/1/81 (85 rushing, 163 receiving). SPECIAL SPECIAL TEAMERS Two Lions players to watch on special teams today are WR Stefan Logan on kick returns and S John Wendling on the team s cover units.
