New at the State Fair Exemplary Home Environment Exhibits New at the State Fair this year, judges in the Home Environment area will select 15-20 exemplary exhibits from Sketchbook Crossroads and Portfolio Pathways to display in the East Campus Art Gallery on the third floor of the East Campus Union. With the help of Reshell Ray, Associate Director, East Campus Programs, the exhibits will be on display from November through December. Students and visitors are encouraged to view the exhibits during campus visits. The Home Environment superintendents, will keep the exhibits after State Fair and return them to the appropriate Educators and Assistants in January.
Science is a process of discovering the world around you through experiments and observations. By definition, this makes even YOU a scientist. In fact, you probably use the scientific method while creating your fair exhibit without even knowing it! How to apply for the 2016 Premier 4-H Science Award: 1. Identify ONE county fair project which was selected for State Fair. Applications can be found at http://go.unl.edu/premierscience 2. Complete the Premier 4-H Science Award Application (including a photograph of the exhibit) to the Extension Office by August 19. 3. Save Saturday, October 8, for a fun-filled day at Raising Nebraska in Grand Island as part of National 4-H Week. The morning will be filled with Science Saturday: Drone Discovery, the National 4-H Science Experiment, from 10:00 am to noon. This program is free and open to the public and families to enjoy the experiment and Raising Nebraska. The Nebraska Mystery Foods Event will begin with an orientation at 12:30 p.m. for pre-registered teams. Youth in teams of two or four may compete, making a main dish on location. Complete details and registration forms will be revealed soon. Reminder: Special Edition Articles Due Put the pen to the paper or your fingers to the keyboard and submit your articles for the 4-H Special Edition by Monday, August 15. The 2016 theme is 4-H Grows Here. 2016 MAKE IT WITH WOOL CONTEST Enter the Make It With Wool Contest! The object of the contest is to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabric and yarn; to encourage personal creations in sewing, knitting, crocheting, spinning and weaving of wool fabric; and to recognize creative skills. The 2016 State Make It With Wool Contest will be November 19 at the Dawson County Extension Office in Lexington NE beginning at 9:00 a.m. Public fashion show is at 1:00 p.m. Divisions are determined by age as of January 1, 2016 (national rule change): Preteen age 12 and under Junior age 13 to 16 Senior age 17 to 24 Adult age 25 and over Made For Others Entry forms, fees, wool samples, and wool testing fees are due October 15, 2016, to Entry Coordinator Andrea Nisley. The National Make It With Wool also has a Fashion Design Competition for college students who are currently enrolled in a college-level fashion or apparel design program. Norfolk Beef Expo s Scholarship Program High school juniors and seniors who exhibit at the Beef Expo are eligible for a $500 scholarship. Show information: Steer and heifer entries will be checked in Saturday, September 6 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Fitting contest will be Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The show begins Sunday, September 11 at 9:00 a.m. As an added educational component for the youths, this year s expo will also include a carcass contest evaluating both quality grade and yield grade. The grand and reserve champion steers and heifers are required to be sold and harvested.
