This includes the following projects: Breeding Beef, Feeder Calf, Bucket Calf, Cow/Calf Pairs, Market Sheep, Breeding Sheep, Goats and Swine. June 1 is also the deadline for anyone to sign up for 4-H or make any changes to 4-H projects that current 4- H ers have signed up for. June 15 all 4-H ers enrolled in livestock projects that plan to show at State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben MUST register there animals online at: June 15 is the deadline for youth in the Beef, Sheep, Goat and Swine Projects to complete their Livestock Quality Assurance. Livestock ID forms are available online at All information for Livestock Quality Assurance can be found at or in the letter you received in the mail a few weeks ago. Please DO NOT do not be late with any of the above mentioned. All late ID sheets, project changes and quality assurance qualification will be taken to the 4-H Council for final decision on acceptance if late. Reminder that Clothing Project Names Changed! Premier Animal Science Event (PASE) This two-day event held on June 28 30, 2015 in Lincoln at University of Nebraska Lincoln Campus offers a fun and educational environment, mixed with competition and a chance to excel and be recognized for your knowledge of animal science related topics. You ll have a chance to participate in educational workshops, competitive events and to learn about the NU Animal Science Department and College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. More specifically, some of the opportunities available include: Livestock Judging Contest Meat Judging Quiz Bowl Poultry Judging Livestock Skill-a-thon. State Life Challenge Contest Life Challenge is a two-day event designed to help youth learn about issues related to Family and Consumer Sciences, explore career opportunities that are available, compete with other teens from across the state and have FUN! This event takes place on June 28-30, 2015 in Lincoln on UNL s East Campus. Opportunities at Life Challenge include: Family and Consumer Sciences Team Problem Solving Challenges Educational and Fun Workshops All registrations for these contests are due to the Extension Office by June 8th. Open to all 4-H youth 12 years old (4-H Age) and older. For more information go to or contact the Extension Office. Nebraska Livestock Judging Classic The Nebraska Livestock Judging Classic will be held on June 13 in Kearney at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds, Ag Pavilion. This is an excellent contest to get both senior and intermediate county teams seasoned for the state livestock judging contest. It's also small enough to send younger members to compete and get some valuable judging experience. Teams and individuals can register on-line at: They are encouraging registration by June 11. The cost for each participant is $ Volunteers for the event are needed as group leaders, tabulators, and folks to move livestock during the classes. 3 Presentations Contest The Southwest Four 4-H Presentation Contest will be held on July 2 at 10:00 a.m. CT. Place to be determined depending on registrations. Please pre-register by calling the Extension Office with your type of presentation and name of your presentation by June 26. Presentations should be related to 4-H, the 4-H member s 4-H experiences, or 4-H project related. Youth may give an individual presentation by him/herself or a team presentation in any class except multimedia. Presentation may be given using posters, props, LCD projector, slide, video or overhead projector. For complete guidelines on preparing your presentation please refer to your county fairbook. Report Your Community Service 4-H Clubs and 4-H ers are encouraged to report their community service/service learning projects on the 4-H community service app at We would really love to be able to report out the tremendous things that our 4-H ers are doing in the state and to get an idea of the value of their work. It only takes about 5 minutes to report activities. 4-H Dress Code Shooting Sports blue jeans and a approved 4-H T-Shirt/polo purchased from the Extension Office or white sleeved shirt with a 4-H chevron. (no shorts) Livestock beef, dairy, swine, goat, sheep, llama, rabbits, cats, dog and small animals. Approved 4-H T -shirt/polo purchased from the Extension Office or white sleeved shirt with a 4-H chevron, blue jeans, hard sole shoes Horse white long sleeved shirt with a 4-H armband (except Hayes), western hat, dark blue jeans, hard-soled shoes or cowboy boots. Be sure to check the rule book on page 18 for specifics on attire. 4-H Club of the Month The Nebraska 4-H Foundation are recognizing 4-H clubs throughout the state of Nebraska. Any 4-H club may nominate themselves to be the Club of the Month. Nominations are due the second Friday of the month. The club who is chosen to be Club of the Month will receive a $50 cash card from the Nebraska 4-H Foundation and their story will be showcased on the Nebraska 4-H Foundation s Facebook, Twitter, and website along with the State 4-H website and Facebook and in their local newspaper. Application forms may be found at: Fair Volunteers Needed! Once again, fair time is fast approaching. We are making contacts for fair superintendents and helpers. If there is an area you would like to help in, please contact the Extension Office to let us know. Volunteers are one of the most important aspects of carrying out a successful fair and 4-H Program. Thanks to those who volunteer their time to help out the 4-H program.

4 Upcoming Dog Shows The Driftwood Feeders 4-H Dog Show will be held on Saturday, June 20 in McCook at the Fairgrounds in the Kiplinger Arena. For more information, plattevalley4paws@gmail.com 4-H Online Horticulture Judging Contest available June The 2015 Nebraska 4-H Online Horticulture Judging contest is just around the corner. This year the contest will be available from June 12 th at 8:00 a.m. until June 22 rd at 8:00 a.m. It is composed of three parts; general knowledge questions, plant part and seed identification, as well as a judging portion. It is open to all 4-H youth, as well as adults, and even Extension individuals. The password is Nebraska and the link listed below will take you directly to the contest. Please have the youth fill in all of their information completely. The online contest should only be taken once by each participant, if it is taken multiple times the first score entered will be the one used. No study materials are to be used while taking the test. The contest will allow an opportunity for the participant to review the answers prior to submitting. Once submitted, the participants will see their score, but they will not be able to see which questions they missed. After the contest has ended, the participants can request to see their scores and their answers. Study Materials for the Online Horticulture Judging Contest and the State 4-H Horticulture Judging Contest held during State Fair are the same and they can be found at: Nebraska Mystery Foods Event held at Raising Nebraska Raising Nebraska is seeking Nebraska youth ages 10 to 18 to participate in the first annual Nebraska Mystery Foods Event to be held on Friday, June 12, Youth in teams of 2 to 4 will identify careers related to nutrition and food science, learn where their food originates, specifically foods grown in Nebraska, and exhibit their knowledge and skill of preparing and presenting a dish focused on Nebraska foods. Teams will be divided into two divisions (Division 1: 10 to 14 years old; Division 2: years old) to compete. The challenge: upon arrival of the event, teams will learn the five mystery ingredients that are available to be included in their appetizer. Teams must use at least one ingredient but may use up to all five. Teams will be judged while making the dish, the appearance of the dish, and a short presentation. To register: youth complete the registration form & pay $15.00 registration fee by Friday, June 5 th to Raising Nebraska. 5 If you haven t start...start now! 4-H Career Portfolio (Record Books) All record books are due September 15 Record books will be available online at sw4.unl.edu. You may also stop by your local Extension Office to pick up a copy however it is preferred that you download from the website. All 4-H ers must use the Career Portfolio. Clover Kids DO NOT have to do Record Books. If you or your club needs help with your record books, please call to set up an appointment. Don t wait until the last minute : ) Items for a complete RECORD BOOK Green 4-H Cover - The Career Portfolio is to be bound with the Green 4-H Cover. New members will need to pick this up at the Extension Office if you have not received one. 4-H Award Application Chase, Dundy, Hayes & Hitchcock: You do not need this to apply for County Awards. If all items of your record book are turned in by the due date you will automatically be eligible for awards. State Awards If you are interested in applying for State Awards contact the office for more information. Through state awards you can have a chance to win a trip to 4-H Youth Congress. 4-H Career Portfolio - This includes Project Accomplishments; 4-H Leadership, Community Service, Volunteer, Citizenship & Educational Experiences; Non-4-H Experiences, 4-H Story & Support Materials (including photos & Animal Financial). These are built upon each year. Please remember to keep and add to this from year to year. SW4 Animal Financial Record - Please use the SW4 Animal and Companion Animal Record book to complete the financial part for all animals including Beef, Sheep, Swine, Horse, Cat, Dog, Rabbit, Poultry and all Small Animals. The financial record books may be found online at sw4.unl.edu. Please include the financial records as the last pages of your Career Portfolio in the Support Materials section. To find the correct record books to use go to: sw4.unl.edu Click on Southwest 4 Counties 4-H on top red bar Click on Recordbooks Don t forget to have you 4-H Leader sign your 4-H Career Portfolio and Animal Financial Records. Record Books are a requirement for many medals, camps/activity scholarships and special awards. If you have any questions, please call your local UNL Extension Office. 6 PLEASE READ -Preparing for County Fair Reminders! As you work to finish projects for exhibiting at the county fair here are a few reminders you will want to remember! All Horticulture and Floriculture exhibits MUST have the cultivar name. These entries are made on Entry Day at the County Fair. BE SURE to bring a list of all entries with cultivar name. Many projects such as wood working or welding require specific and detailed drawings, measurements and/or instructions for how the item was constructed. Home Environment projects must be labeled with name & county. NEW this is SUPPORTING IN- FORMATION: Supporting information is required for all Home Environment exhibits. Attach information to explain steps taken. Information must also include element or principle of design used. Food items must have the recipe with the exhibit as stated in the fairbook. Ingredients such as fresh fruit, meat or cream cheese may NOT be used. (with exception of frosting in the Cakes, Cakes and More Cakes Project) Photography Personal Data Tags needs to be filled out completely each question needs to be answered. Note Unit 3 has extra questions. Many classes ask for further explanation or questions that go with the exhibit...be sure to read fairbook for extra required information. All clothing entries need to be entered and judged at Clothing Day! This includes CLOVER KIDS exhibits such as Accessories, Decorate Your Duds, tied fleece items, etc.. Clothing Day projects include: Beyond the Needle, Steam 1, 2 & 3, Tailoring, Sew for Your Animals, Quilting, Shopping In Style, General Clothing items, Crocheting & Knitting. Dress Code: Be sure to follow it! Dress code is for all contests and shows. Rockets Be sure to enter in correct class. Most rockets will be entered into classes 1, 4 or 7. The only time a rocket is to be entered into class 3 or 6 is if it commercially painted by a professional such as at a car body shop. Food Preservation exhibits must include the altitude the exhibit was processed at. Be sure to follow size dimensions on boards and posters. Be sure to read all livestock rules and guidelines including grooming regulations. READ YOUR FAIRBOOK CAREFULLY! Nebraska Elite Showman Competition The Nebraska Department of Agriculture is again pleased to host the 10th annual Nebraska Elite Showman Competition at this year s fair. The Elite Showman Competition is similar to a Round Robin contest, where participants will demonstrate their beef, swine and sheep showmanship skills as well as take a written test and be interviewed in the ring about the livestock industry. Youth must be 14 to 18 years old as if January 1st. The contest is open to both 4-H and FFA competitors; however there may be only one exhibitor per county. 7 Sign up for 4-H Camps and Workshops Today Visual Arts: June 2 from 1:00 3:00 p.m. MT in Benkelman. Open to 8 to 18 year olds. Youth will explore the elements & principles of art as they create illusionary drawings and scratch art. ESI Camp: June 1-4 from 9:00 to 4:00 p.m. CT in McCook. Open to 5 th 8 th graders. Camp activities will include learning about how to start and operate a small business, visiting local businesses and talking with their owners, playing a business simulation game and writing a business plan that you can implement right away. String Extravaganza: June 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. CT in Hayes Center and June 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. MT in Benkelman. Open to 12 to 18 year olds. Youth will re-create a popular pastime from the late 60 s and 70 s in modern color and learn how typographic string art began. Sitter Sense: June 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. MT in Benkelman. Open to 10 to 13 year olds. Youth will gain skills in caring for younger children and develop skills needed to be a caring, trustworthy, responsible and competent babysitter. Amazing Ag Field Day: June 5 from 9:00 4:00 p.m. CT beginning in McCook. Open to youth ages 8 to 12. Youth will experience a local farm, a veterinary clinic, a sale barn, a trucking company to learn about the amazing agriculture in the area. Clover Kid Day Camp: A Day in the Garden: June 16 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. MT in Benkelman. Open to youth ages 5 to 7. Youth will learn about the life in a garden while making butterflies, garden pets, nature bags and more. Lego Robotics Camp: June 11 & 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT in McCook. Open to youth ages 8 to 13. Youth will work with UNL and Edgerton Explore-it Center members to learn the basic robotics and computer programming using the LEGO platform. Discover Day Camp: June 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CT in Trenton. Open to youth 8 to 11. Youth will learn about the outdoors and weather with a visit from a meteorologist from the National Weather Service. Rounding out the camp youth will build their own anemometer, plant an herb garden, discover wildlife tracks and more. Registration is required for each of the camps one week in advance. Camps are limited to a certain number so be sure to register early. Recipes for Living Camp & Life Challenge Contest This day is designed to help youth who are 8 to 18 years old learn about issues related to Family and Consumer Sciences. Here are just a few reason to participant Get a work out while riding a blender bike to make a smoothie Get SMART about setting goals Learn etiquette skills Learn to live green and be safe in the kitchen Participants will get a recipe book including information on living well Camps are being held in two locations (youth may attend at any location, rides from Trenton will be provided): June 23 from 9:30 a.m. 3:00 p.m. CT in Hayes Center at the Fairgrounds June 24 from 9:30 a.m. 3:00 p.m. MT in Benkelman at the Fairgrounds The 4-H Life Challenge Contest will be held in the afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m. Youth may attend just the Life Challenge Contest! (no fee for contest) Camp is open to 8 to 18 year olds. There is a $10.00 registration fee (includes lunch) for the Recipes for Living Camp. RSVP s & payment must be received by June 17th to your local Extension Office.

Please notify the office if you would like to add an item to the agenda. Pre Fair Entries Due June 26 All pre-fair entries are due June 26th! Forms are enclosed. These forms are very important to be turned in by the due date of June 26th. You may only enter exhibits in the 4-H Project areas you have enrolled in. Enclosed with your pre-fair entry forms is a list of projects you are enrolled in this year. Horticulture and Floriculture forms are to be turned in at County Fair. These pre fair entry forms list all the exhibits you plan to bring to the county fair and include the various contest you plan to participate in. Any late entries will be penalized as follows: Pre-Fair Entries turned in within the first week following the due date will receive ½ of their booster money and those participating in the livestock sale will receive a 5% deduction from their sale price. Pre-Fair Entries turned in following the first week after the due date through the second week will receive no booster money and those participating in the livestock sale will receive a 10% deduction from their sale price. Pre-Fair Entries turned in after two weeks following the entry due date will not be allowed to enter into the 4-H judging however may enter their projects into Open Class if a class is available. Clothing & Fashion Show Entries Please note we are changing the process for the Clothing and Fashion Show Entries. The judged and public Fashion Show will be held prior to pre fair clean up and the Clothing entries will be entered with the rest of the Exhibit Hall Entries on Tuesday of fair week. Clothing entries include: Beyond the Needle, Steam 1, 2 & 3, Tailoring, Sew for Your Animals, Quilting, Shopping In Style, General Clothing items, Crocheting & Knitting. See Schedule below. Fashion Show will be held Sunday, July 19 at 3:00 p.m. Clothing Entries will be entered Tuesday, July 21 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. with judging beginning at 12:30 p.m. Pre-Fair Clean Up Sunday, July 19 Pre-Fair Clean Up is scheduled for SUNDAY, July 19. We will start at 5:00 p.m. All 4-H members, leaders, families and superintendents are asked to help to make things run smoothly in a short amount of time. Bring brooms, shovels, rakes, and rags for dusting. If we all pitch in, we should have the exhibit building and the grounds in top shape by 6:30 for the 4-H Family Hamburger Feed. We hope to see you all on July 19th! It is EVERY 4-H families responsibility to help with Pre-Fair Clean Up. See you at Clean Up!!!

9 Hayes County Announcements 4-H Council Meeting The next 4-H Council meeting will be held Thursday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m. in Hayes Center at the Courthouse. Please notify the office if you would like to add an item to the agenda. Pre-Fair Entries Due Pre-Fair Entry Forms are due to the Extension Office no later than July 8. We have moved the date back for your convenience therefore we MUST HAVE all entries by this date in order to be ready for county fair. Your pre fair entry forms were enclosed with the fairbook. Please be sure to complete each entry form completely. This includes marking the Department, Division, Class Number and Class Name for each item you plan to exhibit at fair. If you need more forms, please contact the office. Horticulture and Floriculture forms are to be turned in at County Fair. Remember you can only enter exhibits from within the projects you are enrolled in. If you have questions on what projects you are enrolled in please contact the office. Clover Kids Projects that relate to clothing (decorate your duds, accessories, tie blankets, tye dye t-shirts, etc) are also entered and judged on this day. Still Looking for 1 or 2 more to Organize & Supervise 4-H Snack Shack We are looking for gracious volunteers to step up and volunteer their service to the Hayes County 4-H Program by being the lead organizers and supervisors of the 4-H Snack Shack held at the Hayes County Fair. Patty and Marlene have shared this position for many years and wish to pass all their knowledge onto new volunteers. We need 2 to 4 parents to step up and please volunteer for this position. This is our biggest fund-raiser for 4-H. With out the proceeds from the 4-H Snack Shack, the 4-H Program would likely have to charge enrollment fees, charge for 4-H manuals, reduce achievement awards, etc. Please help out our great 4-H Program in Hayes County! If you are interested please call the office or contact Patty Gohl. Pre-Fair Clean Up Don t forget to come and help with Pre-Fair Clean up on July 25th at 8:00 a.m. Bring rakes, shovels, hammers, buckets and rags to help set up livestock pens and stalls and to set up the exhibit hall. Weed eaters are handy to get around areas where the mower did not reach. Remember to wear old clothes that you can clean. All clubs and independents are asked to attend so we can have a great fair. With everyone participating the task will be fun and fast. We will have new exhibit hall displays this year and will really need 4-H families to help with set up in the exhibit hall too! Please bring pliers and screw drivers. It is EVERY 4-H families responsibility to help with Pre-Fair Clean Up. See you at Clean Up!!!

10 Hitchcock County Announcements 4-H Council Meeting The next 4-H Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Trenton at the Courthouse Community Room. Please notify the office if you would like to add an item to the agenda. 4-H Enrollment & Fees This year s enrollment fee will be $5.00. All online enrollments were due by April 1st. The $5.00 enrollment fee must be paid at the Extension Office before the online 4-H Enrollment will be accepted and participation in 4-H is allowed. To be eligible to compete at the Hitchcock County Fair, all enrollment and entry deadlines must have been met. No exceptions will be made. Clothing & Fashion Show Entries All clothing judging including fashion show judging will be completed on Thursday, July 9 at 9:00 a.m. in Trenton at the TCDC Community Building. Clover Kids Projects that relate to clothing (decorate your duds, accessories, tie blankets, tye dye t-shirts, etc) are also entered and judged on this day. Fairgrounds Clean up Day Don t forget Sunday, July 12th at 6:30 p.m., to come and help with the clean up of the fairgrounds for fair. Bring a rakes, shovels, hammers, buckets and rags to help set up livestock/animal pens and to set up the exhibit hall. Lawn movers are always need to make the job faster and weed eaters are handy to get around areas where the mowers cannot reach. Remember to wear old clothes that you can clean in. All clubs and independent members are expected to help, so we can have a great fair. With everyone participating the task will be fun and fast. It is EVERY 4-H families responsibility to help with Pre-Fair Clean Up. See you at Clean Up!!!
