April 7 will be our 4-H Fun/Run in New Bloomfield You can help in many ways: 1)Check with your club on the times and ways you can help ( this counts as a county wide fundraiser for your member in good standing) 2) Invite someone to run or run yourself. Preregister by March 15 for a t-shirt. 3) See if a company your know would like to be a sponsor for the event.

2 March 5, 2018 County Happenings Teen Lock In-April 14 from 6pm-6am at the Callaway Christian Church sponsored by the 4-H Teen Group. See flyer for more details. Please pre-register for this event. Teens not in 4-H can also attend. Sarah at for registration forms. 4-H Fun/Run-April 7 will be our annual Fun/Run in New Bloomfield, MO. This is one of our county fundraisers for the year. If you are planning on running please register early by March 15 for a fun/run t-shirt. If you are wanting to help to meet your requirement for helping with a county wide fundraiser please let Sarah know. Registration form is attached at the end of the newsletter. Please forward on to anyone you think would like to run or walk in the event. Register by March 15 to receive a fun/run t-shirt. SMQA Training-Show Me Quality Assurance training will be held on March 15 at 6:00pm at the Extension Office. Anyone that is in an animal project, hams or bacon needs to attend this training 2 years in a row and again when they are over 14. If you have not taken the course before and would like to know more information on it go to If you can not attend the course it can be taken at by May 31. Please RSVP this week. Only 4 people are signed up and many need to come. Please let the Extension Office know you will be coming so we have enough supplies for the evening. Rabbit Workshop-A rabbit workshop will be held on April 28 at the Moniteau County Fairgrounds in California, MO. To register andersonela@missouri.edu Projects Swine/PSP Pig Class-PSP class will again be offered. This class combines average daily gain, carcass composition (as measured by ultrasound) and a traditional live score on a group of production pigs. Pigs will be selected and taken home from the CYE grounds at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday April 7 th. Participants purchase the feeder pigs at market price. In order to have enough animals available to select from please tell Tim Safranski by March 19 th the name of the 4-Her and how many pigs they would like to purchase. Participants should consider that pigs are social animals, so taking 2 or 3 is likely to make them easier to manage until the Expo. It is expected that these pigs will be pounds at selection and reach commercial market weight ( ) by the CYE. Swine State Fair DNA information and form is attached at the end of the newsletter. They are due at the Extension Office on May 15. Callaway Youth Expo Work Days-Work days have been set, activities are still being planned for these days. Keep in mind-some days may require more older youth. Sarah will let you know when she finds out. New members Dues: State $20, County $5 (until July 2018) 4-H Camp Camp Counselor Training The 1st training is next Monday night March 12 at the Cole County Office from 6pm-8pm Camp Staff-We still have an opening for a lifeguard. If you know of someone that is over 18 and interested in one of these positions for the whole month of June contact Christal Huber at huberc@missouri.edu for an application. Interviews will be held in March. Shooting Sports Camp-Certified volunteers are needed for our shooting sports camp held on June 22 & 23, Certified volunteers are needed in Air Rifle, Archery, & Hunting Skills. Please contact Christal Huber at huberc@missouri.edu for more information. Traditional Camp-The theme is Ride the Tide and the dates are June Forms will be coming out for camp by the end of the month. This camp is for ages 8 and up. Counselor Camp-is June 1-2 Mizzou Trap Academy-July 21-23, Prairie Grove Shotgun Sports. Be a part of the 2018 Mizzou Trap Academy and enhance your trap, skeet, handicapped trap, and sporting clay shooting. Enjoy this intensive three day shooting opportunity. Twenty trap shooters (high school juniors and seniors) from across the Midwest come for three days of intensive shooting. The Mizzou Trap Academy is an opportunity to learn skills in a competitive, constructive and fun environment. More information at Regional Opportunities Winter Shoot Out in Boonville-The Cooper County 4-H will be offering a winter air rifle shoot out at the Cooper County Fairgrounds on February 10th, March 10th, and April 10th. Cluster 6 4-H Horse Bowl-March 17 at the MFA Headquarters in Columbia, MO.Cost is $10 per participant (covers prizes & lunch/snacks) or $7 per parent/sibling in attendance (lunch & snacks). See attached flyer in January 22nd newsletter. Lamb Sale-Save the date for the Mid-MO Show Lamb Sale on April 7th at Trowbridge Livestock Arena in Columbia. Silent bid auction begins at 2pm. Missouri State Fair State Fair Project Guidelines-Your club leaders have the updated 2018 rules for the state fair for projects in the 4-H building. Jaden placed 5th at the 2018 State 4-H Horse Judging Contest in the junior competitor division. Kirsten placed 4th in the junior team division. Congratulations girls!!!!!!!!! Congratulations to Jodi Selby for receiving the Frank Graham Leadership Award for her 8 years of volunteer service in Callaway County. She was recognized at the state 4-H office on March 3! State 4-H Congress-Save the date for 4-H Congress on May 3-June 1. The theme is Lights, Camera, Leadership. There will be a new focus on leadership, college and careers and a dodgeball tournament. You must be 14 years or older as of January 1, The fee is $225 which includes housing, meals, activities, and a t-shirt. Registration will open on March 1st through 4-H online. Scholarships for $50 off the price are in the January 22 newsletter Missouri 4-H Equine Tour-Join up! The 2018 Equine 4-H tour, May 21-28, will be headed west to Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado exploring the equine world for teens, ages 14-18, dreaming of an equine related career or aspiring to learn more about the horse world. Applications are due by March 1st and are in the Jan. 8th newsletter. Please mail to the following . Debbie Davis, davisdd@missouri.edu 4-H Public Speaking Academy- Extension faculty, along with 4-H volunteers will provide educational workshops to help youth build their skills and comfort with public speaking. Participants will be guided through the basics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech. Youth will receive individual assistance. The camp is open to all youth years of age interested in learning more about public speaking.the Academy will be June 20-21, 2018 and registration is due May 17th. Lodging will be provided on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO. The cost is $100.
