It s really an easy read, and truly has some classic quotes. One of my favorites is by basketball coach, John Wooden, make each day your masterpiece. Or as Pete the Cat says, Look for the good in EVERY day! As we end the winter season (and I am so glad!), and move into spring, I m reminded that this is the season of newness, a time of refreshing. My oldest daughter, Kirstyn, a senior at Appleton City High School, spoke on faith in God and people at the National Honor Society induction ceremony last It s Time to Register for State Congress! Who: 4-Hers from ages week. I d like to share something she said. I place my faith in people. I believe there is good in the world and I believe that we are capable of doing amazing things. Restoring our faith in humanity is the first step towards reaching true happiness within ourselves. I share that to say this. I was honored and humbled at the service learning done throughout Bates County during our 48 Hour Initiative a few weeks ago. It was so amazing to see 4-H members, high school students, volunteers, businesses and communities working together and accomplishing so much. I appreciate your help in looking for the good in every day! Thank you for being so great to work with and for. 2 MO State Fair DNA Validation Card for Market Barrows All DNA Validation Cards must be turned in to the Extension Office no later than May 14th. 3 CLOVER KID CORNER Peanut Butter Balls Supplies Bowls, spatula, wax paper, liquid and dry measuring cups (1cup and ½ cup), and plastic bags ½ cup peanut butter 1 cup oatmeal ½ cup honey (use liquid measuring cup) 1 cup dry milk Directions 1. Have children mix ingredients together well. 2. Ask participants to use their hands and roll the mixture into balls. 3. Place balls on wax paper. This recipe makes enough for four to six children. Have plastic bags available for children to take home a snack. Note: Be sure to ask parents ahead of time if children have peanut allergies. Club leaders will be turning in a list of members to the Extension Office showing members in good standing. You still must register all livestock! This is just a trial run if it doesn t work, we ll go back to preregistrations next year. Hudson Hustlers 4-H The Hudson Hustlers met on Sunday March 4, 2018 at 6 pm at the Hudson Clubhouse. Pledges were led by Haley Hedrick and Emma McIntire. There were 36 members, 9 leaders, and 15 guests. Project meeting reports were given by Clover Kids, beef, horsemanship, and goat/swine. There were 6 demonstrations given. Colt Scotten made a wiggle bot. Jared Davis demonstrated how to burn a pasture. Wyatt Davis demonstrated how to set up electric fence. Addison Reece demonstrated how to get ready for a pig show day. Emma McIntire demonstrated how to read ear notches on a pig. Austin Nold reviewed the parts of a shotgun. Refreshments were provided by the McIntire,Brownsberger, and Reece families. Open to all 4-Hers, 8-18 (as of January 1st) dogs are welcome 4-H leaders are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate! Registration is April 1 to May 1 on 4HOnline. June 9: State Poultry Day June 15: Lamb and Meat Goat Nose Prints must be postmarked by June 15 for the State Fair. June 20-21: Public Speaking Academy, CMU Campus, Fayette. Must be registered by May 17. June 29: State Fair Livestock Entry Deadline State Poultry Day June 17, 2018 Animal Science Building University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo. Check in begins at 7:15 a.m. Event times are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This will be a youth training/skills demonstration event in an educational format. Tony Perryman, Missouri Department of Agriculture; Jesse Lyons, University of Missouri; Kim Cash, Lincoln University; will be providing the subject matter content with assistance from Dr. Michael Ouart and Dr. Vandepopuliere and Prof. Geiger retirees from the MU Poultry Science Department and students from Mizzou. This will be a great opportunity for leaders to pick up information and materials they can take back home to assist with their poultry training and programs and for members to hone their skills in a voluntary just for fun quiz bowl. Open to all 4-Hers, but participants 14 and over before Jan. 1 will be placed in the senior division. It is $20 for both the youth and adult registrations until May 15, and then youth and adult registrations will be $25 until the June 1 deadline. The Cardinals will be taking on the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1:15 p.m. game. Don't miss out! We have a limited number of tickets, and they go quickly! 5 Coming to the Bates County Fair Saturday,July 14 ARCHERY SHOOT Sponsored by Bates County 4-H Competitors do not need to be enrolled in 4-H Shooting Sports. This event is open to all ages. Participants must provide his/ her own equipment. Field tips only no broadheads. Absolutely no horseplay. Contestants being unsafe or threatening will be removed from the shoot. No refunds will be given. There will be 10 stations. Each station has 2-3 targets to shoot. At registration, the shooter will choose a color of target to shoot. The shooter will shoot that color target on all 10 stations. To start the shoot, the first shooter will shoot target 1 on command & retrieve arrow on command, then proceed to target 2. The second shooter will start at target 1 and follow. Arrows will be shot & retrieved on commands (for safety reasons). Each target will have a maximum 3 minute shoot & 5 minute retrieve/move to next target time. Lost arrows will be searched for after the shoot concludes. Dropped arrows will count as a shot arrow. Targets will be a minimum of 5 yards to a maximum of 35 yards. Shooting fee will be $10 per round (10 targets). Shooters will have the option to choose a different color target on subsequent rounds. Attention Club Leaders: If you are having difficulty finding project leaders, you may join projects with another club. If you have questions, call the Extension office at for more information.
