2 H is for Health The following article is a follow up to my last article entitled H is for Hands. Most everyone knows 4-H is based on the four H s, which are Head, Heart, Hands, and Health, but do you know what those H s really stand for? Most youth are looking for something bigger than themselves and for a sense of belonging. We are going to focus on what each H means and how it can help youth fill these needs. The fourth and final H is for Health. Health to Better Living means physical, emotional, mental, and financial health to name a few. Health is essentially making sure that each and every 4-H member is healthy enough in the ways previously mentioned so that they can be the best version of themselves that they can be. 4-H members are busy learning financial health by completing record books that keep track of project related expenses and income, increasing civic health by helping others through community service projects, and getting mentally healthier by learning new things relating to projects, and finally, meeting new friends increases emotional health. Proof of this final H can be seen in Tuft s study which began in 2002 and was continually repeated in the following years. Using this model, it can be proved that using positive youth development skills such as competence, confidence, caring and character a member becomes more connected to their community, thus reducing negative risk behavior. This study shows that 4-H ers are 4 times more likely to give back to their communities, 2 times more likely to make healthier choices, and 2 time more likely to participate in STEM related activities. Comparing 4-H members to their non 4-H peers, enrollment in a local program generally made them less likely for depression symptoms, made them more civically active, more active and successful in school and to pursue a college degree, less likely to smoke, and more likely to participate in STEM related careers. The overall purpose of any Positive Youth Development Program is to create a child who will be a contributing member of the community they belong when they grow up. When a member is sure to take care of themselves with this fourth H, they are better able to focus on the other three H s to make their club, community, country and world a better place. OPPORTUNITIES AND ACTIVITIES Youth Robotics Day Camp Colorado State University Extension is offering a Youth Robotics Day Camp, aimed at introducing youth to simple programmable robotics and beginning engineering design concepts. Youth 9 to 14 years of age may attend the day camp in Akron and Yuma. Over the span of five mornings the youth will build and program the Lego Mindstorm NXT and EV3 Robots, and learn some hands-on experiences with other robotics components. They will learn to use four programmable sensors on the robots and apply them to different navigation challenges. Participants will also learn some engineering design and computer science skills for creating some smart tools, as well as fun toys. The Youth Robotics Camp is set for June 4-8 at the Washington County Event Center in Akron; and June at St. John s Lutheran Church in Yuma. The day camps will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. each day, with all camp materials and snacks provided. The camp fees have been kept very low only $30 per camper. Space is limited. All youth must be registered by May 21 for Akron and June 1 for Yuma. Youth who participated in previous years may attend again, as they will be working on more difficult building and programming challenges. 3 Be Somebody! On May 30 th, the second Be Somebody! program for 4-H members age 11-13, will be held in Burlington at the Community Center. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program will be from 10:00 to 3:30 p.m. The Be Somebody! program will help youth recognize and develop their personal character and leadership skills. Cost is $15. Contact Scott for more information. Wild Bug Fish Camp The annual Wild Bug Fish Camp will be held June 11-14, at Trapper s Lake, CO. We will be camping with an abundance of wildlife and fishing nearby. This is a great opportunity to learn about nature and the environment. This year you will get to try your hand at shooting bows, black powder rifles and.22 rifles under the supervision of the Colorado Division of Wildlife and trained shooting sports instructors. Campers will also participate in activities including outdoor survival training, fishing, wildlife management, rangeland ecology and management, and a community service project. You can meet lots of new friends and enjoy some outdoor country cooking as well. Contact the Kit Carson County Extension Office at deadline June 1 st. The number of participants is limited, so register early! State 4-H Conference June Colorado State University, Fort Collins State 4-H Conference provides great training and an opportunity for 4-H members, leaders, and Extension agents to strengthen their leadership skills. It also hosts the following state contests including: Livestock Bowl, Livestock Judging, Consumer Choices, Consumer Bowl, Horse Bowl, Horse Judging, Hippology, Horse Demonstration and Public Speaking, Prepared Speech, Impromptu Speech and Parliamentary Procedure. Don t miss this great opportunity to strengthen your leadership skills and meet new friends from all around our state. Any member (14 years or older) is eligible to attend. To register, you must complete the online registration form by May 11. Contact the office for a complete schedule and registration details. Western Heritage Camp This year s Western Heritage Camp will be held July 1-3 at Fort Robinson in Crawford, NE. Campers will be able to stay in the historic cavalry barracks and re-live the history of the fort through the museum and historical presentations. Campfire meals will be typical of the time period. Help with developing your characters for the Western Heritage project will also be provided. Registration will be $110 and due by Wednesday, June 20 th. 5 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 4-H 101 RECORD BOOKS: One of the basic requirements of 4-H is to complete a record book for each project. Whether your project is sportfishing or market swine, we hope that you will learn the importance of keeping accurate records. For some projects, you may be keeping a record of the activities and practice sessions you ve had while completing the project. You may also be asked to track all income and expenses. For livestock projects, you will be asked to record all health treatments for your animals. Remember in different counties require different books and all counties have different deadlines so check with your local Extension Office to make sure that you are meeting the requirements. COUNTY FAIR DEADLINES: Summer is nearly here and many of us are already looking ahead to county fair. All fairs will have deadlines that you will be asked to meet and rules you will have to follow so be sure to keep in touch with your local Extension Office to obtain that information. All fairs will produce an official fairbook with rules and regulations. Some books are mailed to all members while others are available to download or purchase. Also be sure to watch your mail in late June or early July for a local county fair edition of this newsletter. Some important items to watch for include: Livestock ownership dates, Livestock Weigh-In Dates, Record Book Requirements, Entry Deadlines, Stall Reservation Deadlines, Project Requirements, and Livestock Weight Limits. PROJECT COMPLETION: Have you been working on your project yet? Be sure to start early and ask for help if you need assistance. Start with ordering your project manual through your local Extension Office. Get involved this summer with project camps and workshops. Work with your local club leader, project leader or Extension Office to develop your project and ensure that it meets project guidelines. Show off your project during a club tour or as part of your club demonstration. INTERVIEW JUDGING: For all your general or family/consumer science projects (check with your local Extension Office for official guidelines), you will be required to participate in Interview Judging prior to or during your county fair. You will be notified by your local Extension Office of the time and date you will need to interview. On that date, you will bring your completed project and/or project display board along with your record book to be judged. A project judge will sit with you and ask a few questions about your project while they judge your work. NOW WHAT?: It s never too early to start on your projects! Whether it s breaking a steer to lead or learning cake decorating techniques, the earlier you start working and practicing, the more successful your project will be. The same is true for record book completion. Don t wait until the last minute! Ongoing project planning and project demonstration will minimize stressful situations down the road. A few final tidbits for a successful 4-H year are: Attend scheduled club meetings. You will benefit greatly through the leadership, public speaking, and teamwork skills learned and practiced while at meetings, plus you will be on top of all 4-H happenings! If you don t know, don t hesitate to ask questions. Project leaders, head club leaders, Extension Staff and other 4-H families are ready for the opportunity to help. Don t be afraid to try something new. You never know where you may find hidden talents. Read all information that comes from club leaders and the Extension Office. Learn from your successes and mistakes. Make new friends! And most importantly, Have Fun!

6 Display Boards and Record Covers The Extension Office has show boards available for your project displays and record book covers for record book pages. The boards and covers cost $3 each. These also make great science fair boards. Record Book and Project Requirements It s not too early to start thinking about your project s requirements and record books! Electronic record books for all projects are available online. Go to: for your livestock and general project record books. If you are enrolled in a general project, it is a very good idea to read through the State Fair Exhibit Requirements for your project; these are the requirements you will be judged on in your county. To find your project requirements, got to: ExhibitReq.pdf. LIVESTOCK MQA Certification/Recertification Workshops You Must Attend an MQA Workshop 1. First 2 years taking livestock project. 2. Once at 12 years of age. 3. Once at 15 years of age. Public confidence in our meat products is extremely important to the success of the livestock industry. Youth livestock projects play an important role in building or losing the trust of our consumers. It is important that youth livestock exhibitors exceed the standard in producing quality, defect-free livestock for our consumers. In the past, a very small number of exhibitors have given youth livestock shows a bad name by using unethical and unsafe techniques to win at all cost. As a result, we have implemented a strong Meat Quality Assurance program in Colorado. Through the MQA workshops youth learn ethics and good production practices needed to produce a high quality, desirable product for the American Consumer. If you need to attend this year, you will be notified by your county Extension office prior to the workshop. You have the option to test out of the workshop at 12 and 15 years of age but it is highly recommended to attend a workshop instead. The workshops allow for hands on learning and experience. For those of you that participated last year, it will be the same layout. There will be different stations pertaining to the 10 Good Production practices set up at each location and you will have the chance to observe and learn with real supplies and equipment. You will have the opportunity to come any time during the listed period as long as you are able to participate at each station. Allow yourself one hour. The following chart explains when and where the workshops will be.
