In every friend we lose a part of ourselves, and the best part. Alexander Pope I was struck by the pertinence of these words of Pope. They speak directly to the sense of loss which many of us have felt at various times on the death of loved ones. They also speak forcibly to something which is at the heart of what it really means to be human. Life itself is best experienced as a series of little deaths. There is the death which occurs with loss; but there is also the death to false self's; the death to unreality. While the dominant paradigm of modern life seems to be about getting and gathering, about a sense of self, founded upon possessions, the Christian faith has at its heart a Lord and teacher who urged us to consider the lilies, more than that, to take up the cross and deny ourselves. In this, the Christian faith, is profoundly counter cultural and counter intuitive but nonetheless deeply true. There is a sense of self denial and self giving abandonment which is a profound truth at the heart of many of the world s religions. The Zen Master, Kyogen Chikan, expresses this idea of ongoing death of self using poverty as a symbol: Last year s poverty was not yet perfect; this year s poverty is absolute. In last year s poverty there was room for the head of a gimlet; this year s poverty has let the gimlet disappear. This corresponds to the teaching ascribed to the Buddha: Gone to dissolution in the mind. The cravings have come to an end. It is also echoed in our Christian tradition in the teaching of Meister Eckhart: If it is the case that a man is emptied of things, creatures, himself and God, and if still God could find a place in him to act, then we say: as long as that (place) exists, this man is not poor with the most intimate poverty (eigentliche Armut). For God does not intend that man shall have a place reserved for him to work in, since the true poverty of spirit requires that man shall be emptied of God and all his works, so that if God wants to act in the soul, he himself must be the place in which he acts - and that he would like to do. For if God once found a person as poor as this, he would take the responsibility of his own action and would himself be the scene of action, for God is one who acts within himself. Gardeners Corner June 2016 By Alistair Peak PGS With so many jobs to do inside and out, take time out to enjoy and relax in the garden. In life we all have to prioritise our tasks and in the garden it s the same. 1. Water/ feed. 2. Dead Head/weed. 3. Mow. 4. Clip edges of the lawn. It can make all the difference even if you can only do the last two. 5. Enjoy and relax with a cuppa or glass. If you enjoy looking around gardens this is the prime season to get all those many inspirational ideas, keep an eye open for the NGS yellow notices, many local villages take part. When looking around take a notebook to jot any plant names down or ideas. I should like to give a warm thanks to those who open their gardens, I know it can be hard work but do enjoy the visitors who come round, it s a lovely comradeship amongst fellow gardeners. June the fourteenth was a date I was told to remember by a mentor, not because it was his birthday but the last date to pick Asparagus. Don t pick it after this date other wise you drain the crowns of their goodness and you will not have many spears (Asparagus shoots) next year. Give them a feed of growmore or a general fertiliser now, which will help them for next year. When placing plants particularly for scent the siting /placing is very important to achieve the best results, without having to clamber over the rest of the border to catch their fragrances. A great aid to siting is if placed in a windy spot the scent will be carried further. There are many scented plants including Philadelphs (mock orange) Daphnes, Viburnums both winter, spring and summer too. Dianthus (pinks), Dianthus Mrs Sinkins is a variety that has been breed with an incredible scent, these can be planted in a large pot/urn and placed near a seat. One of the most famous English sights and smells has to be Lavandula (Lavender) in flower must hail summer is here. Planted near a path you brush your legs pass it and you have that lovely aroma. Bulbs can be wonderful too and the Lillies can be a great asset. One of the best Lillium regale is heavily scented and is stunning to look at. It s to late plant the bulbs now but Garden Centres/Nurseries may have some in pots to purchase, plant into a large clay pot and keep them for years to come. Gardeners Tip: 2016 is a big year of celebrations, with William Shakespeare, and the Queens Birthday. I expect that she has planted many a tree to mark special occasions. Finally this is the three hundredth year since the birth of Capability Brown. Thinking of what he did all those years ago shaping our countryside with his great vision. I think the challenge to day is to create our own visions within our own gardens, different levels within the garden, creating vistas, planting trees, using statues and creating follies. The Rector writes: HOLY OILS I am immensely grateful to Roy Cashmore, Reader, for his gift to the Parish of oil stocks for use in our ministry here. It is a twice-timely gift, coinciding as it does with both the 150th anniversary of modern Reader ministry in the Church of England, and also with the official Birthday of the Queen. (The oil of Chrism was of course used at her Coronation and at that of all British monarchs. On Good Friday, at evensong in St Giles' Blaston, Roy Cashmore had offered oils for use in the Parish and in an excellent sermon had explained their significance to the church. What follows is part of Roy's sermon. Roy Cashmore writes: 'So, what are the 3 oils and what are they used for? There is one known as the Oil of Catechumens. Catechumens are those who are being prepared for baptism. The oil is used to make a sign of the cross on the head of the person who is to be baptised. The priest then asks the question at The Decision - 'Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?' and so on before signing the catechumen with the sign of the cross in oil, declaring that Christ claims you as his own. Receive the sign of his cross. The second oil is the Oil of Chrism. This again has olive oil as it's base but toot is added balsam. Now there are a number of balsams - one is a plant that grows by some streams and it's not that one, nor is it the Friar's Balsam you may have added to hot water to inhale when you have had a cold. No, this is the sweet balsam which is produced by a tree. My dictionary also gives a meaning for balsam, 'a healing or soothing agent'. In English, especially in that sense, it is often also referred to as balm - a healing or soothing influence or consolation. In the final verse of that lovely Passiontide hymn, We sing the praise of him who died, of him who died upon the Cross, are the words - which are referring to the Cross - The balm of life, the cure of woe. The balm of life - the healing or soothing influence. That oil with its balm is the Oil of Chrism and can (and in my view should) be used, after the actual baptism with water, with the words 'May God who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace' Because the Oil of Chrism symbolises the riches of God's grace - the riches of the Holy Spirit. The oil of Chrism is also used at confirmation and at ordinations, again to symbolise that grace which the candidate receives in these sacraments [and the same is true of its use in consecration and in enthronement]. Finally, the Oil of the Sick; this is used to anoint those who are ill, whether that illness is physical, mental or spiritual. I already mentioned that oil has for ages been used as a healing substance. Here, with prayer it is used for that purpose. The oil is applied, usually as the sign of the cross, on the head and hands of the sick person. I was privileged to attend the Festival Eucharist at All Souls, Langham Place on Ascension Day in the presence of HRH, The Duke of Edinburgh, the Patron of Central Readers Council, as a representative of this diocese. There were Readers there from all over England and Wales. Entry was by ticket which had to be supported by photographic ID and eventually we all got in and took our places as the organ played music by JS Bach, F Mendelssohn and J Langlais. Prince Philip then took his place, escorted by the Rector and the Vice Chair of the CRC. The service then proceeded with the Archbishop of York presiding and several Readers taking significant parts. The sermon was by the Bishop of Sodor and Man, the president of CRC, in which he summarised the Order of Readers from the Resolution passed by Convocation on Ascension Day 1866 to the present day. He urged us to remember our individual, special role in the ministry of the church. Then following the creed, we all were invited to renew our dedication to the service of the Lord as heralds of [the] gospel and ministers of {Christ s} grace. The Liturgy of the Sacrament followed. The music was led by the organ and All Souls Brass Ensemble and up to All Souls usual high standard. All in all, it was a very memorable service and fitting celebration of the re-establishment of Reader Ministry 150 years ago. My only regret is that, because of the limited size of All Souls (and perhaps by the time) more Readers were not able to attend. Perhaps, as in Leicester, there were diocesan events. On the Sunday after Ascension, there was a Choral Evensong in Leicester Cathedral at which Dr Christina Baster (of CRC) preached. The Assistant Bishop (The Rt. Revd Christopher Boyle) and the principle cathedral clergy were present. Each Reader was given a small gift (a pendant wooden cross) as a memento. LEICESTER CATHEDRAL VISIT SUNDAY 5 TH JUNE The Cathedral has extended an invitation to the Gartree deaneries to visit on 5 th June. The programme is scheduled to commence at 2pm with groups touring the cathedral. This will be followed by Choral Evensong at 3pm. During refreshments there will be a talk led by the Dean, the Very Reverend David Monteith, with further tours of the cathedral offered at 4.15pm before departure at 5pm. Following the Neighbourhood Plan open day s and the various community and facilities group interviews among the various parties within the village the Parish Council s intention was to fund a defibrillator for the village. Great Easton is now in a position to purchase the defibrillator, install it and to maintain it, in order for this to all happen successfully we are looking for anyone with first aid experience, knowledge of defibrillators and anyone with an interest to join a project group with the aim of discussing the most effective way to bring all of this together. HEDGE CUTTING Every year at this time we ask residents who own trees and hedges next to the foot ways and pavements to keep an eye on their hedges so that they don t intrude on to the foot way and make it difficult for people to get by. This is especially important for parents with children in push chairs etc., and for those people who have some difficulty walking. Everyone has always responded well to this request and there never seem to be any problems or complaints, or indeed accidents. We hope very much that this high standard will be kept up again this year ANNUAL MEETING The Annual May meeting returned Phil Long as chairman. Paul Brittain was elected vice chair, Alice Murdock continues as tree warden, Nora Clarke continues with police, community and heritage matters. Paul Brittain also leads on planning matters for the PC while Lucy Walsh is bringing the PC up to date with communications including a new web site which will be implemented by September 2016. This also helps to maintain the important issue of transparency of all PC business. Greta Vizma continues to look after street lighting and general matters. The village 'poors' charity is now nearing completion of it's merger with the Valentines Goodmans charity operated across our neighbouring villages and will help to manage our small charity more effectively. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The Neighbourhood Plan is now reaching the final draft stage and a copy is available for all to read on the Parish Council website under Neighbourhood Planning. This important plan, after confirmation by the Parish Council, will then go to the final six week consultation period which will include stakeholders, HDC and, following a final Village Information event and an external examiner evaluation, to all households before being formally adopted. WALKING GROUP NEWS Clear blue sky, shimmering water the sight and smell of masses of blue bells, these were the main features of our April walk around the Hambleton Peninsula. Disappointed at not seeing an Osprey but accompanied most of the way by the sound of woodpeckers drumming and the song of many other birds. Great Easton & District WI Every year members are asked to vote on Resolutions that could form a basis for NFWI campaigns and educational activity. This year two resolutions will be put to the vote at the Annual Meeting. At our meeting in May we discussed at length and voted on the following topics: i) To provide appropriate care in hospitals for people with dementia ii) To avoid food waste and address food poverty Our delegate at the meeting at Brighton In June will vote according to the collected numbers of votes from all the institutes she represents. To end the evening on a lighter note, the discussion was followed by a lively game of Beetle, a glass of wine and nibbles. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 1st June, when Brian Johnson will tell us the story behind household names with his talk entitled 'Made in Leicester' There are seats available on the bus for our visit to the Richard III centre in Leicester on 6th July, leaving Great Easton at 6pm. Deborah explained the traditional methods used by the dairy and brought along samples of the many different cheeses for members to try. Next meeting will be on Wednesday 8 th June 2016 When there will be a Falconry Demonstration at Keythorpe Hall. Great Bowden Music Fest 2016 CLASSICAL/MUSIC THEATRE/JAZZ Now in its third year, the Great Bowden Music Fest 2016 presents a varied concert series continuing its tradition of top quality music featuring local musicians, international guests, community groups and young talent. The festival which takes place from the 7th -10th July in St. Peter and St. Paul Parish Church offers something for all music lovers with classical works, choral music, music theatre and the Jazz and Big Band Extravaganza. Refreshments will be available at all concerts and throughout the Saturday Jazz evening. The Fest's commitment to showcasing young talent continues with the Vivaldi Four Seasons performed by four up and coming violinists from the Midlands, a young piano trio from the Royal Northern College of Music playing another version of the "Seasons" by Piazzolla and the Leicester Grammar School Big Band. Classical concerts will feature music by Dvorak and Vivaldi, with the Harborough Singers joining forces with the Festival Orchestra in the Gala Finale which also includes Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante with soloists, Christopher White (violinist and Artistic Director) and Swiss violist Johannes Gurth. "Music of the Night" will present favourites from many of the greatest musicals, welcoming the Harborough Choral Society and local soloists, Tracey Holderness, Louise Oakley, Beth Hodgson and Jacob Leeson. A free "Coffee and Chamber Music" concert on Saturday 9th July at 11:30 is an addition to the line up of concerts and there is once again an exhibition from the Great Bowden Visual Arts Group displaying their "People's Choice" winners, on sale at concerts.
