1 STEWARDS REPORT Australian Turf Club WARWICK FARM RACECOURSE Wednesday 14 September 2016 Weather: Fine Track: Soft (5) Rail: +3m Penetrometer: 4.98 STEWARDS: R W Livingstone (Chairman), M F Van Gestel, P C Dingwall, T P Moxon, T A McDonald and cadets C M Manley and M G Porlezza (jl) Supplementary: HAWKESBURY Thursday 8 September 2016 Race 8: EHI Australia Maiden Handicap 1800m Arabian stable representative Mr C Duckworth reported that the gelding had pulled up well and it is the intention of the stable to continue with its preparation. The only excuse he could offer for the disappointing performance was that the gelding overraced when caught wide without cover on a soft surface. RACE 1: McGrath Estate Agents Handicap 1600m Ubatuba a post-race veterinary examination of the colt, which raced keenly in the early and middle stages, did not reveal any abnormalities. RACE 2: TAB Handicap 1400m Just Victoria slow to begin. Red Heat- overraced when caught wide without cover in the early and middle stages. Cross Stitch near the 200m and then a short distance later was bumped and became unbalanced by Zenalicious, which itself was bumped and taken wider by Pirapala (B Shinn), which shifted out to improve around the heels of Sparkle when there was not sufficient room. B Shinn was advised to exercise carer. Savvan when questioned, G Schofield stated that he was under no specific instructions, however in the early stages he endeavoured to shift in and trail Sparkle, but when Zenalicious held its ground and Pirapala improved to that horse's inside, he was ultimately left racing wide without cover for the majority of the race. When questioned as to whether there was an option to go forward and race outside the leader Let's Celebrate, G Schofield advised that, whilst he was caught wide, he was satisfied with his position as Savvan was travelling comfortably and he felt it would have been to the detriment of his mount to push forward, given the position occupied by Sparkle outside the lead, a horse which in his view may not have relinquished that position. He added he could offer no explanation as to why Savvan then failed to finish its race off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr J Cummings advised in his view the filly was up in weight and did not finish its race off after
2 having to travel wide. He added Savvan had done pace work on Monday, 12 September 2016 and had galloped on Saturday, 10 September 2016. Mr Cummings indicated he would now have the filly undergo a veterinary examination, the results of which he will forward to the Stewards. He also advised the intention would be to freshen Savvan prior to its next race start and he may experiment with the filly's gear. RACE 3: Ranvet's Salkavite Handicap 1400m Eight Over slow to begin and soon after was checked when crowded between Military Machine and Tycoon Mar, which shifted out abruptly. Stable representative Mr C Duckworth was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Eight Over racing again. Hollywood Mo slow to begin. After the 700m was left racing wide without cover. Inclined to lay out under pressure in the straight. Drachenfels slow to begin. J Collett was advised to exercise more care. RACE 4: Schweppes Handicap 1600m High Mist a veterinary examination of the colt, which got its near-hind leg up on the barrier running board briefly on two occasions, passed it fit to start. Brilliant Meteor slow to begin. Silom Road throughout the race travelled wide without cover. H Bowman (High Mist) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of Adaboy Ross, which was taken out across the running of Silom Road, which was checked, blundered and lost the running to which it was entitled. H Bowman's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 18 September 2019 and to expire Sunday, 2 October 2016, on which day he may ride.
3 Caton near the 100m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Adaboy Ross (J Collett), which shifted out under pressure. Margarita Rush when questioned regarding the performance, App. M Kinny stated the mare travelled well in the early and middle stages, however did not run on when under pressure in the straight. 4 Swing Sensation, which was giving ground, was briefly tightened for room between Fragonard and Champawi (W Costin), which laid out. In the circumstances W Costin was told to exercise more care. Fragonard blundered near the 1300m. Rider B Avdulla advised that after his mount was obliged to race wide without cover throughout the race, tired in the straight and, after blundering near the 150m, became badly unbalanced. He said he was concerned with the filly's action and for this reason he did not ride his mount out to the finish. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Katswiri when questioned, T Berry explained that rounding the home turn he did not elect to try to shift wider as initially he was trailing Champawi, which was under pressure and wider was Swing Sensation, which was also under pressure and was not a favoured runner. He added consequently he elected to shift back to the inside where he was able to obtain clear running near the 250m after having to make contact with Baubo on a couple of occasions. T Berry further stated that after this his mount finished the race off fairly and in his view is looking for races over a longer journey.
