Family Zone The Cobourg YMCA Family Zone allows parents to workout or try a new class while their kids enjoy great youth programs. Monday - Thursday 4:30-7:30pm Saturday 9:00-11:00am Ages 3-12yrs Children get to choose from any of the three activities during Family Zone hours. Family Zone is only available for YMCA Northumberland members only. Get Creative Be Physical Find Your Zen There s a little artist in each child waiting for an opportunity to express themselves. Children will have tons of fun in a variety of art and drama activities. For the child who is interested in all sports and challenging team building initiatives. Emphasis will be placed on fun and fair play. Kick back at the end of the day and enjoy reading a book, playing board games or listening to music with friends. Note: A parent or guardian must be in the building while kids are participating in Family Zone. Children can be dropped off anytime during family zone hours with staff at PlayCentre.

Youth Programs Winter 2019 Youth Program Guide Volleyball House League The Volleyball House League program is a partnership between the Northumberland Breakers Volleyball Club and YMCA Northumberland. Fridays 5:30-7:00pm Members $100 Non-members $140 Ages 8-10yrs & 11-14yrs Players learn individual skills, sportsmanship and the importance of playing as a team. No previous volleyball skill is required, just a desire to participate and have fun. Location: Cobourg YMCA Gymnasium Parents Night Out Fridays Jan 25 / Feb 22 / Mar 29 5:30-9:00pm $20 per child. Winter 2019 Youth Program Guide Youth Programs Train like a Ninja Classes focus on the ABC s of being a ninja: Agility, Balance, and Coordination. Each week, we teach new obstacles and ninja skills! Ages 11+ DROP IN Monday 6:15-7:00pm (Gym) Wednesday 7:15-8:00pm (Gym) Teen Strength 101 M This program allows participants to earn their shoe tags by learning the operation of cardio machines, pin-loaded resistance training machines, and free weights. Participants must complete the four components of training before receiving their shoe tag. Ages 13+ Book an appointment with Membership Services (Personal Conditioning Centre) Leaders in Training M YMCA core values form the basis of this leadership development program. Topics include communication, teamwork, group dynamics, problem-solving, planning and organizing, philanthropy, volunteerism, and health and fitness. Ages 12+ Wednesday 6:30-8:00pm (EarlyON) Aquatic Leaders in Training Provides youth with the opportunity to get involved in the YMCA Aquatic department and their community. Youth get a chance to develop leadership skills and belong to a group of positive, like-minded peers. Participants will work towards Bronze Star and learn Bronze Medallion skills while having opportunities to earn volunteer hours. Swim in the pool, make crafts, get active in the gym, or relax with a movie. Registration required. Friday 6:30-9:00pm Every Friday youth are invited to come to the YMCA and use the pool, gym and conditioning room. We will also have some special events and workshops starting at 8 pm. No membership is required, but a photo ID must be presented. Appropriate workout attire and footwear required. Junior Lifeguard Club provides an action-packed challenge for kids who love the water. Our mission is to provide participants with the training and education so they can become one of the elite lifeguards at the YMCA. Take three steps toward leadership skills, a safer community, and a career in aquatics. Register at the Cobourg YMCA. 1 Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross 2 Standard First Aid & CPR C 3 National Lifeguard BRONZE MEDALLION WITH EMERGENCY FIRST AID March 11-15 9:00-4:00pm Members $180 Non-Members $250 Location: Cobourg YMCA This course is the first step on the path to lifeguarding. It teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education- judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates receive certification in Emergency First Aid and CPR B. Prerequisite: Candidates must be 13 years of age or have a current Bronze Star certification. 100% attendance is required. BRONZE CROSS March 11-15 9:00-4:00pm Members $140 Non-Members $225 Location: Cobourg YMCA This course is a prerequisite for the National Lifeguard Award. OUR SWIM LEVELS Splasher/Bubbler (6mo-3yrs) Caregiver assisting child program to develop comfort in the water, familiarity to environment and to promote water fun. Starfish/Duck/Sea Turtle Bobber (3-5yrs) Gaining comfort in the water, blowing bubbles with gradual facial immersion, front & back floats with assistance. Sea Otter Floater (3-5yrs) Must be comfortable entering and exiting the pool on their own, as well as putting their face in the water. To complete: child must be able to float on their front and back and swim 5m unassisted. Salamander Glider (3-5yrs) Must be able to float, swim 5m unassisted in shallow water. Must be comfortable beginning the transition from shallow to deep water with assistance. Sunfish Diver (3-5yrs) Comfort in deep water. To complete: 10m back and front swim with leg and arm action, as well as front and back float in deep water. Crocodile Surfer/Dipper (3-5yrs) Surfer Surface support for 30sec, front and back swim with arm action and flutter kick up to 15m, side breathing, face in with buoyant aid. Dipper Front and back swim 25m, intro to front and back crawl, standing dive, and surface support for 45 seconds. Whale Otter (6 yrs+) This level is for beginner swimmers. To complete: submerge, holding breath, front and back float unassisted, front and back swim 5m. Swim Kids 1 Seal (6 yrs+) Deep end activities on a more regular basis. Build endurance and stamina to proceed onto length swimming. To complete: surface support 20sec; front and back float in deep water unassisted; front and back swim 10m. Swim Kids 2 Dolphin (6 yrs+) Build endurance and stamina for length swimming and instruction. To complete: tread in deep water 45sec, front glide with kick, face in, sidebreathing 15m, front and back swim with arm and leg action 15m. Jump into deep water and swim 15m. Swim Kids 3 (6 yrs+) Introduction to length swimming. To complete: initial standard front crawl 25m; back swim 25m; tread water 60sec; jump into deep water and swim 50m. Swim Kids 4 Star 1 Star 2 Star 3 Star 4 Star 5 Star 6 Star 7 To complete: front crawl intermediate standard; back crawl initial standard; tread water 90sec; endurance swim of 75m. Swim Kids 5 To complete: front crawl advanced standard; back crawl intermediate standard; elementary backstroke initial standard; endurance swim 350m (14 lengths) throughout program; tread water 2min. Swim Kids 6 To complete: back crawl advanced standard; elementary backstroke intermediate standard; breast stroke initial standard; endurance swim 300m (12 lengths). Swim Kids 7 To complete: recognition and care for an obstructed, conscious victim; eggbeater kick 60sec; elementary backstroke 50m advanced standard, breast stroke 50m intermediate standard. Endurance swim 400m (16 lengths). Swim Kids 8 To complete: swim 200m in under 6min; eggbeater kick 2min; breast stroke 50m advanced standard; sidestroke 25m initial standard; endurance swim 500m (20 lengths). Swim Kids 9 To complete: rescue unconscious victim with obstructed airway; sidestroke 50m intermediate standard; butterfly stroke 25m initial standard; endurance swim 600m(24 lengths); help teach a swim skill. Swim Kids 10 To complete: recognition and care for bone/joint injuries; respiratory distress and asthma/anaphylaxis; create and deliver 3 fun activities for a stroke/ skill; 400m swim in under 12min.

Please review our aquatic guidlines to help YMCA Northumberland maintain the safety of all members, guests and staff. 0-5yrs Children 0-5 years must be accompanied in the water with a parent or guardian(16yrs+) at all times at a ratio of 1 guardian to 2 children regardless if they are able to pass the facility swim test or not. 6-9yrs Children 6-9 years of age who have not passed the facility swim test must be directly supervised by a parent or guardian(16yrs+) at all times at a ratio of 1 guardian to 2 children. If the children are wearing lifejackets the ratio may increase to 1 guardian to 8 children. 6-9yrs Children 6-9 years of age who can pass the facility swim test may swim on their own provided a parent or guardian(16yrs+)is supervising them from the pool deck. Adults may supervise a maximum of 4 children. 10yrs + Individuals 10+ years of age who are not able to pass the facility swimming test will be directed to swim in the pool area appropriate to their abilities. Facility Swim Test The following skills must be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the YMCA lifeguard on duty to complete the facility swim test: 1 2 3 Jump into deep water *Participants of any age may be asked to perform the swim test.
