MAROONDAH MAGIC BASKETBALL CLUB Maroondah Magic Basketball Club Newsletter July 2014 We are now half way through our Winter season, and we have seen loads of improvement in all our teams. Good luck to all our teams in the run up to the Finals series. GO MAGIC! POSITION VACANT: There is a vacancy on our committee for a new Venue Co-ordinator. Help and assistance will be available on a phase-in/phase-out basis Please contact Andrea Haig 0425 772 298 Healthy Tip Avoid dairy products high in fat. Low fat yogurt would be fine. Adequate fluid intake is important before and during the game to avoid dehydration... but again, too much is not good medicine. In addition to water, sport drinks or fruit juices are good choices. If your practices or games are late in the afternoon, right after school, make sure you eat breakfast and lunch that day. Some fruit like bananas or oranges one hour before the practice or game would be a Important Dates to Remember: Sarah Parsons 200th Game! good booster. 19th July 6:15pm, Kilsyth Basketball Stadium, Men's game commences at 8.15pm Wear your Maroondah Magic uniform and get free entry Let s make it a sea of green & gold! Maroondah Magic will be providing half time entertainment for both Women's and Men's games, with some of our junior teams playing a mini game.

LIFE MEMBERS 2014 Sue McGrath : Sue started with Maroondah Magic in 2004 when her 2 eldest boys started playing. She arrived at the first training session with Kyle to find that they had no coach, and since she had played basketball in her younger years she thought why not give it a try, so started coaching (with the help of Peter Cunningham that first season ). Sue ended up coaching teams from miniball to U16, A,B and C Grade. A few seasons with her sons Kyle and Tim and some teams without any of her own children. In recent years Sue has not coached herself but now 2 of her sons are coaches so Sue has provided support for them. Sue joined the committee in 2006 and became secretary in 2008 and has continued in that position since. Gus Tabacciera: Gus has been coaching for Maroondah Magic for at least 15 years and for the majority of that, has been coaching both a girls team on a Wednesday night and a boys team on Saturday, together with another night for training both teams. That is a fantastic commitment for a man who does not have any children at the club, but just wants to give up a chunk of his personal time to BE INVOLVED! Gus has had a variety of teams over the years, from under 14 to under 18 girls and from under 10 to under 14 boys and there would be many players who have been influenced by his "Never say die" attitude and his attempts to make all players in his teams better players than when they first came to him. Congratulations to Gus and we hope he continues in his roles and his involvement encourages other parents to put their hands up to BE INVOLVED.

Cassandra Hamilton: Cassy started at the Maroondah Magic Club 10 years ago as a mini-ball coach to her son Joshua. The following season Cassy joined the committee and took on the responsibility for presentation day and trophies for the next four years. Initially presentation day was not all that interesting, once you received your trophy you would leave whilst others received theirs. Cassy tried a variety of different approaches for presentation day, new venues to accommodate more seating, she even tried an indoor sports centre which was a hit for the children and adults. When Dorset was finally built presentation day was moved there, games were introduced, with the chance of a prize to keep the interest for the kids to remain until all trophies were handed out. We can thank Cassy for today s format for presentation day. Cassy then moved to the position of Venue co-ordinator, another job she did extraordinarily well. This position she held for the following 4 years. During that time Cassy was able to secure 3 more schools courts to help cater for the growing number of teams at Maroondah Magic. Cassy secured Kalinda, Tinternvale and broke into a school that did not want to hire out it s courts to any club. Cassy made her case to the school, persisted over many months to finally secure Ruskin Park as a training venue. Following on from Venue co-ordinator Cassy moved to take on running the Uniform shop, to which Maroondah Magic has just introduced the new reversible top. Many hours were spent on the design and quality checks to ensure our club has a great looking uniform product. 12 ENTRIES FOR THE PRICE OF 10 Did you know that Kilsyth Basketball have an offer available for advanced purchase entry to their venues? You can purchase a card from Kilsyth (only) for $20, which will give you entry to 12 games, this means 2 of the games are free entry. You can use these cards for all players and adults, and at all venues Kilsyth, Oxley and Lilydale.

Hello Magic Community, There appears to be some confusion over the new uniforms. Below are the most frequently asked questions. 1. New uniforms are REVERSIBLE (just the singlets) 2. New Shorts are identical to the current stitched style just printed. 3. Reversible singlets are NOT compulsory until Winter 2015 Season. 4. Special numbers can be ordered, however they will take 6-10 weeks to arrive (they must be paid for when ordering). 5. Uniform Shop hours 5.45-7.30pm Every Tuesday. Cassy Hamilton Magic Uniform Co-Ordinator 0412 539 953 NEW COACH S SHIRTS We also have new Coach s shirts. These are printed the same as the reversible singlet. If you are coaching this season and haven t picked yours up yet, drop into the uniform shop and see our friendly team. Thank you very much to my awesome son Joshua (u18) for modelling our stunning new uniforms & coach s shirt.

NEW MAGIC REVERSIBLE UNIFORM How exciting after months of design changes, fabric changes, colour changes, Maroondah Magic has a NEW uniform, a NEW Reversible singlet. It has been more than 10 years since the club had a new uniform and at the Uniform Shop we are extremely excited!!! New uniforms have been available since the beginning of April and they have been really well received. A new full uniform is $80, as you can see the shorts are the same as our previously, however the new shorts are now printed instead of stitched. So to save a few dollars you really only have to upgrade your singlet until you grow out of your shorts. We are still taking trade-ins on shorts that are in good condition. New uniforms are NOT compulsory until the Winter Season 2015 (April 2015)

LOOKING AFTER OUR VENUES Important points for everyone to remember when using any venue : - siblings are not to be left without a parent - No food is to be taken into the venues - please make sure children DO NOT climb on or use any equipment that is in the gym - it is most important we all abide by these simple rules so Magic can continue to use these great venues. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me:- Andrea Haig 0425772298, Andrea has advised that due to work commitments, she will be unable to continue in the position of Venue Co-ordinator. Please consider joining the committee and assisting in this important role. MAROONDAH MAGIC PRESENTATION DAY MAY 2014 We have a number of uncollected awards from the Summer 2013/14 season. Trophies/medals and awards were given to Grand finalists (for U9 and up players), Coaches awards (U9 and above), participation medals (U9-U12 players who did not play in a grand final) and trophies for all miniball players. Please contact Kaye Smith on 0425 716 138 or kayelesleysmith@bigpond.com.au if you have not received your trophy/medal. Regards

ASSISTANCE REQUIRED Our club has a number of regular events where we could really use some additional help. Uniform sale day (held twice a year just before the beginning of each season), Presentation Day (twice a year, early in the season), Grand Final day (we need volunteers who are experienced scorers and would be willing to score for other Magic teams) and Come and Try Sessions (held on Friday evenings late in each season to recruit new players for the next season). Our hard working committee devote a lot of time to make these events happen but as our club grows we would love to have some more help. If you could give up a few hours please email your details to Sue McGrath (Club Secretary) suemcg@tpg.com.au and Sue will keep a list of people we can call on to help out at these events. This list is for those people happy to help on an irregular basis. Let us know! FACEBOOK Have you liked our new Facebook page.
