PARENT/PLAYER INFORMATION BENDIGO JUNIOR BRAVES 2014/2015 The information supplied here should assist parents or players with some of the questions they have of the Junior Braves program. Further questions may be directed to the Secretary or Director of Coaching Jonathan Goodman TRYOUT INFORMATION It is highly recommend that if you wish to be selected in a Junior Squad team you attend all try-outs. Players should arrive 15 minutes before the try-out time to ensure they are warmed up. Registration forms to tryout should have been ed to anna.keogh@bendigostadium.com.au or handed in at the Sports Office by Wednesday 30 th July. Try-out times are provided on page 7 of this document. Also please remember the following: Do not wear Junior Braves, Basketball Vic County or Basketball Victoria apparel to try-outs. Domestic singlets and shorts are allowed or comfortable clothes for basketball training purposes. Bring a drink bottle. Ensure your try-out registration form has been sent to anna.keogh@bendigostadium.com.au or dropped into the Sports Office by the 30th July. This can be found on page 8 of this document. Coaches may have been selected but if try-out numbers are larger than expected and players warrant selection than more than the advertised teams may be selected e.g. there could be two Under 18 teams, 3 Under 16 teams etc. Keep a watch out on the website for try-out time changes. SEABL and Big V teams playing in home finals will influence try-out times. Please bring your own basketball to the try-outs. Ensure you are here 15 to 20 minutes before the scheduled try-out times. Numbers have to be recorded on players legs and players in attendance ticked off. The people doing these roles are volunteers and therefore patience will be appreciated. It will also allow you to stretch. Junior Braves Information 2014/ Page 1 of 8
LENGTH OF SEASON The squad season commences in October after tryouts and finishes in approximately March/April 2014, except for teams that qualify for VJBL or Nationals. Additionally some teams may wish to attend a tournament after other teams have finished. This will only be allowed if there is a full commitment from the team and approval has been given by the Director of Coaching. COSTS Costs can vary from team to team depending on the tournaments you attend and the accommodation. It is anticipated the costs would be approximately $1,500 but if you play in VJBL (refer to other area of the document regarding VJBL) this could be higher. If teams choose to stay together then the parents will be responsible for booking their own accommodation when they attend tournaments. The registration fee is: - $100 for a family with 1 child. - $190 for a family with 2 children. - $280 for a family with 3 children. There are also costs for uniforms that are provided later in this document. VICTORIAN JUNIOR BASKETBALL LEAGUE (VJBL) VJBL is an elite competition that the Bendigo Braves enter their first team in the Under 14 and Under 16 age groups for boys and girls. To play in the first team in the age group and also play in the Basketball Vic Country championships, the VJBL competition is compulsory. When playing in the VJBL, the Braves will play against mainly teams from associations in the Melbourne suburbs. However, they can also play in areas such as Geelong, Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland. The competition is played on a Friday night between November to August and then September if the teams make finals. There are breaks for school holidays. The Bendigo Junior Braves committee will contribute $1,000 to each team to assist with travel costs. When entering the competition the team will pay $400 deposit, and these funds will be returned to the team should they not withdraw. Any costs that are incurred by the team e.g. fines for a forfeit ($300), are payable by the team. Junior Braves Information 2014/ Page 2 of 8
TOURNAMENTS AND OTHER EVENTS All players are required to attend a minimum of four to five tournaments but no more than six tournaments. Events will be selected will be approved by the Director of Coaching and Junior Braves Committee. The Bendigo tournament is compulsory, and other tournaments may include but not limited to: Swan Hill, Shepparton, Maryborough, Nunawading, Wangaratta, Wodonga, Melbourne Tigers, and Southern Peninsula etc. These tournaments and the numbers will be confirmed shortly. A maximum of 4 tournaments will be subsidised by the squad committee. As most tournaments are charging an all-inclusive entry fee, the committee will subsidise an amount per tournament deemed reasonable. Most teams also have the opportunity to compete in the BBA domestic competition. This is to assist teams to learn to play together. Players are charged $6 to play in these games. You will find that there will be times when your domestic game and your squad game will clash. A player s domestic commitment must come first as without our domestic competition our squad program would not exist. Squad teams are normally entered into an age group higher than what they currently play for example an Under 12 team will be entered in the Under 14 competition; this is to assist with development. Allowing our squad teams to compete in the domestic competition is a privilege and should be treated accordingly. SPONSORS The Bendigo Bank is the major sponsor of the Bendigo Junior Braves. All our sponsors are shown on the advertising signs on Court 3 and the Junior Braves website. If possible use these businesses to show your support and certainly let them know you are part of the Junior Braves program if you do. UNIFORM Depending on the team your child is selected in, this will determine what the compulsory items are. For all teams the items of uniform will be (prices to be confirmed and are approximates below), with some compulsory and others not compulsory: - Playing Shorts $40 (compulsory for all players) - Training singlets $24 (compulsory for all players) - Polo top (compulsory for all players, team managers and coaches) - Tracksuit top with hoodie approx. $45 (compulsory for all players) - Tracksuit bottom (compulsory for VJBL players only tracksuit top and bottom to be approx. $80) - Braves Backpack (compulsory for VJBL players only) - Braves socks (not compulsory) Players that purchased gear mentioned above in previous seasons will not need to re-purchase those items. Step In Sports will provide the playing shorts and training singlets while Shooting 2 (sports shop at the Stadium) will provide all other clothing / items. Both businesses will be available on dates that you will be informed of in the future to try on gear. It is likely set times will be set initially for each age group. Junior Braves Information 2014/ Page 3 of 8
A playing jersey will be provided to you by the Junior Braves Committee, which must be returned at the completion of the player s season. WHAT COMES AFTER THE TRY-OUTS You will be informed of the selection process at the try-outs, which will differ to past years. GUIDELINES AND CODES OF CONDUCTS The Junior Braves program like all basketball program strongly enforces the Basketball Victoria Country Code of Conduct and also has its own Junior Braves Policy and Guidelines document. These documents can be found at Once at this website go to Forms & Information and then Policies to locate these documents. Once selected - all Players, Parents, Coaches and Team Managers will need to sign a declaration stating they have read these documents. TEAM MANAGER For each team a Team Manager will be chosen by the coach and approved by the Junior Braves Committee. The Team Manager is generally one of the parents from the team. The Team Manager will be responsible for the team money, and a bank account will be opened (by the association) for the Team Manager to maintain this process. Unless each team has a Team Manager they cannot participate in the program. An information night for Team Managers will be held in the near future. All teams must have a representative preferably the manager at this information session. If a team does not have a representative attend the meeting then tournament subsidies will be withheld from the team. There is a lot of information discussed at this meeting and player jerseys and bank account information is handed out. The Team Manager is a vital component in the success of the team. JUNIOR BRAVES COMMITTEE The Junior Braves Program is run by a sub-committee of volunteers known as The Junior Squad Committee along with Jonathan Goodman who is the Director of Coaching. The BBA Board are the controlling body of the Junior Squad Program. Any problems that cannot be resolved at team level should be directed to the Junior Squad Committee. If the issue cannot be resolved, the issue will be referred to the Conflict Resolution Committee (another sub-committee of the BBA which has been formed to assist with dealings with any basketball issues). All complaints to the committee must be in writing. The Junior Squad Committee meets once a month. Junior Braves Information 2014/ Page 4 of 8
Please remember when addressing any members of any committees that they are volunteers who are attempting to run the program for the benefit of all players involved and should be treated with respect. Without these valued volunteers the Junior Squad Program would cease to operate. The Junior Squad committee consists of: Ben McCauley (Chairman), Anna Keogh (Secretary), Mark Lennox (Treasurer), Dave Rennie, Wes Daly, Don Coulson, Lyn Peel and Jonathan Goodman (Director of Coaching).
