HISTORY OF THE BAGR: The Seawolves are 6-4 all-time at the Brice Alaska Goal Rush, which started in 2008-09 last season, UAA lost to North Dakota (5-0), before coming back to defeat Merrimack (6-3) the Seawolves won the tournament for the second time in 2011, defeating Nebraska Omaha (3-0) and Mercyhurst (6-2) UAA also won the inaugural tournament in 2008. The Seawolves, who also won 3-1 over 2013 NCAA Frozen Four runner-up Quinnipiac last Friday, trailed the Falcons after the first period and for most of the second before Kwas tied the game at 1-1 on a power-play at 19:06... After Air Force went up 2-1 at 13:45 of the third, Kwas struck again on the power-play at 18:08 to tie the game... He then fed line mate Matt Bailey for the game-winning goal with just 3.4 seconds left, before completing his hat trick with an empty-net goal from center ice at 19:59... The win gave UAA a 2-0-0 start to the new season. SEAWOLF BITES: The Seawolves head north following an exciting season-opening tournament at home the Seawolves won their eighth Kendall Hockey Classic title, Oct. 11-12, after defeating then- No. 10 Quinnipiac and Air Force at the Sullivan Arena the Seawolves earned a 3-1 victory over the Bobcats on Friday before coming from behind to defeat the Falcons, 4-2 on Saturday... the game vs. Quinnipiac was the first-ever meeting between the teams and extended the program s record to 10-0-3 in season openers since 2001 the Seawolves are now 5-0-3 in the last eight Kendall Classic games, and have the program s first 2-0-0 start since the 1996-97 season the victory over AFA gave the Seawolves their own tournament title for the eighth time in 23 tries and marks their first-ever Kendall threepeat UAA won the title three times in four years from 2003-06... the Seawolves were perfect on the penalty kill over the weekend, going 9-9, while going 3-13 on the man advantage... against Air Force, the Seawolves scored a season-high three goals in the third period with just four shots on goal... the senior class leads UAA after the first two games with four goals, seven points and two power-play goals... all four of the goals scored on Saturday were by seniors. PLAYER NOTES: Individually, the Kendall Hockey Classic s Most Outstanding Player award went to senior F Jordan Kwas (3-1 4), who netted his first collegiate hat trick and a career-high four points on Saturday vs. Air Force Kwas received help from line mate senior F Matt Bailey (1-2 3), who matched his career high with three points against the Falcons sophomore F Blake Tatchell contributed with two helpers on Saturday, while picking up a goal on Friday... Kwas hat trick was the first for UAA since Mitch Bruijsten on Dec. 9, 2011... joining Kwas on the all-tournament team was junior F Brett Cameron, who missed most of the 2012-13 season with an injury, and senior G Rob Gunderson, who backstopped UAA to the win against Quinnipiac on Friday with 24 saves... making his collegiate debut on Saturday was freshman G Michael Matyas with 25 saves, including a team-high 12 in the second period... scoring his first collegiate goal and first assist was freshman F Hudson Friesen on Friday, while freshmen Dylan Hubbs and Tanner Dusyk each collected their first collegiate helpers... first-year head coach Matt Thomas joins all previous UAA head coaches by winning his first game at helm for the Seawolves. UAA took home the hardware after picking up a 3-1 win over 2013 NCAA runner-up Quinnipiac on Oct. 11, before posting a 4-2 comefrom-behind win against Air Force, in which UAA netted three goals in the last two minutes of play... leading the Seawolves and taking home the tournament s Most Outstanding Player honor was senior F Jordan Kwas, who furnished a four-point night vs. Air Force... senior F Matt Bailey also delivered a multi-point night on Saturday, registering a goal and two assists, including the game winner... on Friday, the game was highlighted by senior G Rob Gunderson s (24 saves) performance in net and multi-point nights from junior F Brett Cameron and freshman F Hudson Friesen. UBC: UAA tallied a pair of power-play goals and hung on behind the goaltending of freshman Michael Matyas for a 2-1 exhibition victory over the University of British Columbia on Oct. 4 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex... the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead thanks to a first-period strike from junior defenseman Austin Coldwell and a second-period score by freshman forward Dylan Hubbs, outshooting the Thunderbirds 23-12 through the first 40 minutes... the visitors from Vancouver made a huge charge in the third period, firing off 12 unanswered shots on goal, including an even-strength tally by Greg Fraser at the 10-minute mark. But Matyas, a redshirt from Calgary, Alberta, was stellar in his Seawolf debut, stopping 24 of 25 shots... Coldwell put UAA on the board at 6:24 of the first when he converted from the left face-off circle on passes from junior Derek Docken and sophomore Bobby Murphy. After the T-birds took a 5-minute major for checking-from-behind in the second stanza, freshman Zack Rassell found Hubbs with a perfect crossing pass at the 9:18 mark to make it 2-0.
