1963 V The Veterans Squash Rackets Club of Great Britain President: Philip Ayton www.gbvetssquash.co.uk Chairman: John Woodliffe SUMMER 2010 NEWSLETTER SIR MICHAEL EDWARDES Sir Michael Edwardes was awarded the Burrell Trophy to much acclaim after the presentation of prizes on Finals Day 2010. In his address, John Woodliffe said that Sir Michael, apart from being a dedicated player and still playing has done a huge amount for our Club over very many years. He was our President for 13 years up to 1992 and he was instrumental in introducing doubles competitions into our annual Tournament, starting with the O45 in 1984, the O55 in 1986, the O65 in 1996 and the O70 in 2001. Added to this, he generously presented the Edwardes/Berman Trophy for the O45 doubles competition, the President s Cup for the O50 singles, the Burch Trophy for the O65 doubles and the Leo Melville Trophy for the O70 doubles competition. (Incidentally, he won the O55 Doubles in 1987 with Toddy Berman, the O65 Doubles in 1996 again with Toddy 2010 Awarded the Burrell Trophy 2010 Sir Michael Edwardes with the Burrell Trophy flanked by President Philip Ayton (left) and Chairman John Woodliffe. Berman and the O70 Doubles in 2001 with Frank Crowley,) Sir Michael, together with Peter Trimingham, Toddy Berman and Brian McGivern, in 1986 experimented with different widths for a doubles court and having decided that 4ft wider than a singles court seemed best, went ahead in 1988 to have the first doubles courts built to that dimension at the RAC Country Club at Epsom. Some while afterwards the World Federation agreed that this would be the standard size worldwide. Sir Michael also sponsored a doubles court in St Francis Bay Squash Club in South Africa, where he spends some time every year. That club now boasts two doubles courts and one singles court and an annual International Invitation Doubles Tournament has been held there for some years. The Tournament is now supported by over 100 competitors in different agegroups. A number of Vets Club members have been invited to take part in a very enjoyable competition. Sir Michael Edwardes has been an inspirational supporter of our Club for over 30 years and richly deserves the award of the Burrell Trophy. John Woodliffe, Lance Kinder, Sir Michael, Peter Trimmingham in St.Francis Bay, South Africa. IN THIS ISSUE 2010 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT RESULTS PHOTOGRAPHS NEW HON. CLUB CHAMP Tournament Director s Report 2009/2010 The semi finals and finals of the Club Tournament were held over the weekend of 17th 18th April, hosted this year by Broxbourne Squash Club in Hertfordshire. There were over 50 games played during the course of the weekend and as usual the squash was of the very highest standard. There were nearly 20 internationals playing and winners of British Open and National titles competing. This again shows that the club is continuing to fulfil its aims, to encourage age group players to continue playing. It is pleasing, with the number of Masters events throughout the season, the Regionals, The British Open and Closed, plus player s own club and league commitments, that we still have the entry levels that we do. To continue at this level it is imperative that we encourage our members to recruit others to join and to participate in all of the club activities, whether social matches, our tournament or tours. We will, with permission from the hosting clubs and England Squash Masters, actively try to recruit new members at the Masters events throughout the coming season. It would also be hoped that this year s participants will try and find new members from within their own club and county setups. As well as this we must aim to get existing members who no longer enter to do so again. With a lot of work from Mandy Akin we have had the best supported Ladies events ever, but must try to build on this. Again there were a considerable number of matches not played and walk-overs given, but as this was mostly through injury then there is not much we can do about it. Highlights of the weekend: The match between Darren Withey and Eamonn Price in the O 45, both England players, Eamonn being the National champion winning in 4 games. The Willmor brothers getting back into winning ways in the 55 Doubles. Karen Hume and Mandy Akin winning their respective singles and then joining together to win the Ladies doubles. The 55 and 65 categories were won by National Title holders, Mark Cowley and Adrian Wright and recently crowned English Open over 70 Champion, Brian Philips in the O 70 group beating many times champion John Woodliffe. John Woodliffe and Lance Kinder, never ones to leave empty handed, retained the O 70 doubles. If they do it again next year they will repeat their feat of five successive victories that they achieved in the O 65 Doubles. Finally it was good to see our President Philip Ayton returning to full fitness and retaining the O 60 title, although he did confess to be playing Old Man s Squash at last. The pleasurably part was that although fiercely contested all games were played in the fairest of spirit The Finals were followed on Sunday by the AGM, which passed off swiftly and without controversy, Gordon Coulthard standing down and David Garrett taking his place as Treasurer. The doubles scoring system was commented on and we may consider revising this again next year. I am also proposing that the O 45 and O 50 age groups be canvassed as to whether they would wish to play PARS After the prize giving the catering staff from Broxbourne provided us with a superb buffet attended by approximately 60 members and guests. Thanks to Wendy and the staff at Broxbourne and to Karen Lane who did a fantastic job of liasing between us and Broxbourne. I have contacted Colets and they confirm that they would be willing to host the Finals in 2011. Easter 2011 falls late, Easter Sunday is 24th April so I propose that we provisionally plan the finals for the weekend before, on 16th 17th April. Geoff Howes Eamonn Price O45 Singles winner. Mandy Akin winner Claire Baker runner up O40 Singles. Karen Hume O50 Singles winner. Alasdair Niven runner up Mark Cowley winner O55 Singles. 2

TREASURER MATCH RESULTS GB VETS vs BEACONSFIELD 14th MARCH 2010 This was the 13th annual match but only the 3rd GB Vets win! The GB Vets got off to a brilliant start with Mike Fagg at No.5 and John Nicholson at No.4 both winning comfortably 3/0. Dave Cooper struggled at No.1 losing 0/3 and Chris Goodbourn at No. 2 just managed to lose 6/9 in the fifth. Len Froggitt clinched it for the GB Vets by beating fellow GB Vets member Phil Courtenay-Luck, 3/1. Yet another excellent match and brilliant evening. Jack Harris GB VETS vs NUFFIELD HEALTH 26th MARCH 2010 Always a needle match since all of the GB Vets players are also members of Nuffield Health (nee Cannons, nee Pinnacle, nee Bromley Town) First on was Nigel Belle for the GB Vets, fresh back from a half-knee job playing Robert Smith fresh back from a fullknee job. He lost 1/3. Peter Young made the match level beating Alan Nelson 3/1. Karen Hume at No. 3 lost 1/3 but Peter Willmor at No 2 Levelled the score 2/2 by winning 3/2. The much anticipated husband vs wife match, Albert Akin versus Mandy never materialised did he have a bad back or did she have a headache? Nuffield Health clinched the match 3/2 as Dave Leach at No 1 went down 1/3. A most enjoyable match was rounded off with much banter, much liquid refreshment and an excellent meal. Nigel Belle From left: Standing: John Nicholson, Mike Fagg, 4th from left Jack Harris, Len Froggitt, end of row Phil Courtenay-Luck. Kneeling from left: Chris Goodbourn, Dave Cooper. GB VETS TAKE ON THE FRENCH! Courtesy of Derek Tullett and his son Jonathan, seven Kent GB Vets plus wives and partners flew to Nice to do battle with the might of the French over the weekend 29th May 1st June 2010. All action took place in baking temperatures at the Antibes Squash and Fitness Club which, by the way, Derek and Jonathan now own! If the almost unbearable temperatures were not bad enough, two more problems arose even before a ball was hit. Firstly, whilst the average age of the GB Vets was a respectable 60, the French average was at least half that, with a brilliant lady player just 17! Secondly the games were to be played PARS to 11 which can produce very short games. However the hot courts favoured longer rallies so the games were not that short. On the Saturday four matches were lost 0/3 Robert Smith, Gordon Freakes, Jon Miles (only 41 and not yet a GB Vet) and Nigel Belle. Only Nigel managed to get close, losing 8/11, 10/12, 10/12. Two matches were extremely well contested, both Dave Leach and Peter Willmor battled hard but lost 1/3. But the match of the day was between Karen Hume and the 17 year old French lady. Neither of course wanted to be beaten either by an over 50 year old or by a teenager! After a seesaw match which was of an extremely high standard, highly entertaining and played in the best of spirits, Karen managed to win 3/2 12/10, 11/13, 2/11, 12/10, 11/9. The weekend also saw some most enjoyable squash doubles games, Racketball, gourmet meals and a great day in Cannes! So whilst the French may have won the squash it would be fair to say that the Brits won the après squash! It is to be hoped that this will become an annual fixture and hopefully next time the teams will be more evenly matched both in age and ability. Our grateful thanks go to Derek and Jonathan and to Gloria Saunders for hosting a most fabulous weekend of squash and brilliant fun. Nigel Belle THE ENGLISH OPEN NOTTINGHAM MARCH 2010 This was the first Euro tournament with unfortunately only 9 players entered from overseas. The draw was 100. PARS was inflicted on all age groups OK for professionals and ultra fit 35 year olds but disliked by the older age groups. Gawain Briars, the instigator of PARS, was at the Nottingham Club and he never, ever envisaged the game going to PARS for Masters it wasn t set up for that. However, Club good and the vast majority enjoyed themselves. Men s O45. Mark Hildred progressed to the _ s and Darren Withey to the semis. Men s O50. Chris Harland reached the final having narrowly beaten Ian Bradburn (12/10 in the 5th) and Duleep Adhihetty on the way. Alan Thomson beat Chris in the final 3/1 having beaten Dermot Hurford 3/0 in the semis. Men s O55. Only 8 in this draw with Mark Cowley beating Stuart Hardy 3/0 in the final. Men s O60. Aubrey Waddy beat Chris Ansell 3/2 in the final. Men s O70. John Preston, Lance Kinder, Tony Seare progressed to the _ s, Malcolm Gilham to the semis. Brian Phillips won the final 3/0. Women s O50. Sue Pynegar progressed to the semis and Lynne Davies lost in the final. Women s O55. Another win for Bett Dryhurst with Averil Murphy runner up. Nigel Belle with apologies to Martin Pearse. 7 GB Vets from the left: Nigel Belle, Karen Hume, Peter Willmor, Dave Leach, Robert Smith, Gordon Freakes, Derek Tullett. AN APOLOGY In the report on the National Squash Championships February 2010 the Editor omitted to mention that Averil Murphy beat Bett Dryhurst to take the Women s O55 title. Apologies Averil! Ed. CLUB SHOP We have the following items for sale: NEW HON. TREASURER David Garrett has taken over as Hon. Treasurer from Gordon Coulthard who has worked tirelessly for our Club for the past 14 years. David qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Deloittes in 1971. He became involved with the Cannons group just after the launch of its first club, in Wandsworth, in the early eighties, and as Finance Director helped take the group through to its sale to Vardon in 1996. He retired in 1998, and now lives happily with Debbie on an island in the Thames, just upstream from Hampton Court. They will be getting married in August of this year. DG is 64 and has just celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his first game of squash. In his youth he captained Manchester University and had the occasional game for Lancashire. He now plays a more sedate game commensurate with his age, and has played for Oxshott in the Surrey Vets league for many years. He also captains the Oxshott team in the Surrey Vintage league, and plays social and doubles squash at the RAC Woodcote Park. This year he had the honour of playing in the January intercounty round, representing Surrey O-60s in the match against Kent. He looks forward to turning 65 next February and gaining the relative protection of the next age grouping.
