Head Coach Maura McHugh Maura McHugh, who has over 25 years of coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, will begin her third season as head women s basketball coach at Stony Brook in 2006-07. McHugh was named the sixth head coach in program history in April of 2005. In only her second year at Stony Brook, coach McHugh led the Seawolves to their first post-season bid in the Division I era as they finished second in America East and earned an at-large bid to the Women s N.I.T. Under McHugh s leadership the team orchestrated the third-best turnaround in all of Division I after posting a 20-10 record in 2005-06. The Seawolves defeated their first ranked opponent in 2005-06, when they bested No. 19 Temple. The 2005-06 squad also posted an RPI ranking that reached as high as 28th in the nation. McHugh s athletes continued to garner post-season honors as Dana Ferraro was named America East Defensive Player of the Year, Mykeema Ford was named to the America East First Team and Jessica Smith garnered second-team honors. In addition, Smith was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District I second team. In her first year at the helm of the Seawolves, McHugh guided sophomores Jessica Smith and Mykeema Ford to America East second team honors, while freshman Dana Ferraro earned All-Rookie Team accolades. Ford went on to capture both the America East scoring and assists titles with 17.5 ppg and 5.0 apg, while Smith was tops in the league with a.545 field goal percentage. McHugh arrived at Stony Brook in 2003-04 after spending five seasons with the Sacramento Monarchs of the Women s National Basketball Association (WNBA) as an assistant coach from 1999-01 and head coach from 2001-03. Her best season at the helm of the Monarchs came in 2001 when she took over head coaching duties after a 6-6 start, guiding the team to a 17-8 mark the rest of the way, including the franchise s first appearance in the Western Conference Finals. During her tenure with the Monarchs, she coached a pair of Olympians in Yolanda Griffith (2000 and 2004) and Ruthie Bolton (2000) and All-WNBA selections in Griffith and Ticha Penicheiro. Before her arrival at Sacramento, McHugh was the head coach for the first-year franchise Long Beach StingRays of the American Basketball League (ABL) for the 1997-98 campaign. That season, she led the team to a 32-22 overall mark and to within one game of the ABL title, becoming the first coach in professional sports history to lead an expansion team to the playoff finals in its first year of competition. After the StingRays franchise folded, McHugh moved on to the role of Director of Player Personnel for the ABL in 1998. McHugh began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at Penn State University from 1975-77 before she was promoted to assistant coach for the next two seasons, becoming the first full-time women s basketball assistant coach in school history. After her stint at Penn State, McHugh broke into the head coaching ranks at the University of Oklahoma, leading the Sooners to a 142-70 (.670) mark during her seven seasons from 1980-87. At Oklahoma, she turned a program that never posted consecutive winning seasons into one that collected four 20-plus win seasons, including in each of her final three years. McHugh, who led the Sooners to six postseason appearances, was named the Big Eight and Converse Regional Coach of the Year in 1986 after guiding her team to the Big Eight Championship and the NCAA Sweet 16. McHugh then moved on to coach at Arizona State University from 1987-93, where she transformed a 14 2006-07 Seawolves Women s Basketball

Head Coach Maura McHugh sub-.500 team into a Pac-10 contender while cracking the nation s top 20 during her final two seasons and earning an NCAA Tournament berth. While at ASU, McHugh coached Ryneldi Becenti, the first two-time All-Pac-10 selection in school history, and Fran Ciak, a two-time Academic All-America selection. A native of Worcester, Mass., McHugh was a fouryear starter at Old Dominion University. She was one of the first women s basketball players in the nation to receive a scholarship, including the first in school history. McHugh graduated magna cum laude with a degree in health and physical education, finishing at the top of her class in the College of Health and Physical Education. She then moved on to Penn State, where she earned her master s degree in physical education in 1978. McHugh is married to Gregory Olson and resides in Oldfield, N.Y. During her tenure with the Monarchs, she helped guide the team to an appearance in the Western Conference Finals and coached several Olympians and all-conference players. Before her time in Sacramento, Cherry spent two seasons as an assistant coach at California State University-Northridge and one year with Northeast Louisiana. Cherry also spent one season as an assistant under McHugh with the first-year franchise Long Beach StingRays of the American Basketball League (ABL) for the 1997-98 campaign. That season, she helped lead the team to a 32-22 record and to within one game of the ABL title. Cherry began her playing career at Oregon State University in 1987-88 before transferring to Arizona State University, where she played for two seasons under McHugh from 1990-92, graduating in 1992 with a bachelor s degree in finance. She began her coaching career at her alma mater the following year, serving as an assistant coach for the 1992-93 campaign. Olivia Dardy enters her first season with the women s basketball program at Stony Brook. Dardy has four years of coaching experience and will focus on recruiting at Stony Brook while assisting with academics, scouting, camps and community relations. Dardy will also work with the post players. Dardy arrived at Stony Brook after serving as an assistant coach at Winston-Salem State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Fairfield University. Coaching Staff/Support Staff After a solid playing career for the Seawolves, Ingram makes the move from player to coach. As a coach for the Seawolves Ingram will take over coordinating team travel, film exchange and working with guards. She will also assist with recruiting, scouting, camps, film breakdown and academics. Ingram will serve as the facilities liaison and supervises the team managers. Ingram joined the Stony Brook basketball team in 2001 after a stellar high school career at North Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Georgia. Ingram s career at Stony Brook was plagued by injury but she always made an impact when she was on the court. After missing the first five games of the 2004-05 season, Ingram provided a spark when she returned to the squad and helped the Seawolves win four of their next five games. Last year as a redshirt senior, Ingram suffered a season-ending injury and then joined coach McHugh and her staff as a student assistant and helped coach the team to the third biggest turnaround in women s basketball. Ingram earned her degree in social science interdisciplinary studies in 2005. She is currently working towards her master s in liberal studies.
