game information www.cakesbaseball.com @cakesbaseball Tuesday, June 19 Shrine on Airline Metairie, LA new orleans baby cakes (34-36) vs. sacramento river cats (33-38) RHP Pablo Lopez (1-1, 3.27) vs. RHP Casey Kelly (6-5, 4.77) THE BABY CAKES The New Orleans Baby Cakes conclude a sevengame homestand today with the finale of a four-game set against the Sacramento River Cats. New Orleans was swept in a four-game series at Raley Field last year, getting outscored 19-5, but are looking to return the favor today, having already won three in a row from the River Cats for the first time since a six-game streak spanning the 2005-06 seasons. The Baby Cakes are playing 17 of 21 games at home leading up to July 4. YESTERDAY S NEWS Austin Nola hit a go-ahead three-run double in the fourth inning, and Scott Van Slyke added a three-run homer in the fifth to power the Baby Cakes to a 7-4 win over Sacramento. Austin Slater slugged a two-run homer in the top of the first, but Cakes starter Tyler Cloyd bore down to keep the River Cats off the board over the next four innings despite allowing eight hits. Back-to-back singles by Eric Campbell and Rafael Ortega in the fourth were followed by a two-out walk to Cristhian Adames to load the bases for Nola, who ripped his second double of the night into the right field corner to score all three runners and put the Cakes in front. On the heels of singles by Magneuris Sierra and Campbell an inning later, Van Slyke swatted his sixth home run of thte season to stretch the lead to 6-2. Orlando Calixte singled home a pair of runs in the sixth off Ben Meyer, but the Cakes capitalized on an error to get a run back in the bottom half, and Jose Quijada fanned three in 2.0 perfect frames to earn his first Triple-A save and a win for Cloyd. ON THE HILL Pablo Lopez makes his third start for the Baby Cakes. Lopez gave up three runs (two earned) and four hits in 5.0 innings in a loss to Fresno last Wednesday. In his Triple-A debut on June 6 in Las Vegas, Lopez pitched 6.0 innings, yielding three runs (two earned) and six hits in a victory. Despite a 1-2 record, he owned the Southern League s best ERA at 0.62 (3 ER/43.2 IP) when he was promoted at the end of May, earning a spot on the league s All-Star squad. Acquired in a trade from Seattle last July, Lopez entered 2018 ranked 24th among the Marlins top prospects. DEAN OF HITS Austin Dean has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games, batting.333 (20x60). Dean owns a.347 average overall between NOLA and AA Jacksonville, ranking 15th in all of Minor League Baseball, after hitting.420 (34x81) in 22 games at Double-A to be named April s Southern League Player of the Month, pacing the circuit in batting average, hits, total bases (53), slugging percentage (.654) and OPS (1.120). Dean is batting.343 (35x102) in 25 games for the Cakes since moving into the leadoff spot. HOT SOUP Over his last 45 games, dating to April 26, Eric Campbell is batting.374 (61x163), second-best in the PCL in that span to Reno s Socrates Brito (.386). His.458 on-base percentage in that time also ranks second, while his 38 RBI are fourth-most. Campbell has driven in 19 runs in June, tied with Fresno s AJ Reed for the league lead this month, and last night charted his third consecutive multi-hit game and team-leading 23rd multi-hit effort of the year. In 29 career games vs. Sacramento, Campbell is hitting.369 (38x103) with seven doubles, one triple, six home runs and 23 RBI. Campbell ranks ninth in the PCL batting race with a.337 average. SEIZE THE DAY The Baby Cakes have won four straight day games to boost their season record to 9-8. New Orleans is batting.264 under the sun while the pitching staff owns a 3.18 ERA (51 ER/144.1 IP). On This Date... 2013: Kyle Skipworth hits the first walk-off grand slam in NOLA history to defeat Oklahoma City, 4-3. Trailing 3-0 entering the ninth, New Orleans loads the bases with one out against Jose Valdez, setting the stage for Skipworth s slam. TOMAS THE TANK Tomas Telis has hit safely in 12 of 14 games at home, where he is hitting.400 (22x55). On the road, Telis is batting.247 (19x77). Since joining the Cakes on May 4, Telis has picked up 41 hits - 38 of which have been singles - to rank among the top 20 in the PCL in that span. Dating back to May 23 last season, Telis owns a.330 batting average (93x281) over his last 72 games with New Orleans. STEAL AWAY Magneuris Sierra swiped his 11th bag of the campaign Sunday, two days after his 10th steal made New Orleans the first PCL club to have three players reach double-digit steals this season, joining Isaac Galloway (15) and Rafael Ortega (11). The Cakes are tied for fourth in the league with 56 stolen bases. SLYKE FATHER SLYKE SON Scott Van Slyke homered for the third time in his last seven games. Over his last eight contests, he is 9x26 (.346) with five walks, three doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI. Van Slyke had been 2x28 in his previous seven games since returning from a onemonth stint on the disabled list on June 2. HOME SWEEP HOME At 21-13, the Cakes own the third-best home record in the PCL, behind Oklahoma City (27-8) and Colorado Springs (22-11). New Orleans has not swept a home series of at least three games since taking four straight against Omaha from June 9-12, 2016. The only series sweep of Sacramento was a four-game set at the Shrine from June 2-4, 2001. MAGNIFICENT MAGGY Magneuris Sierra has hit safely in 15 of his last 17 games, hitting.314 (22x70). In his last 24 starts, Sierra has compiled a.307 average (31x101) with six doubles, two home runs, seven RBI and 16 runs scored. JUNE BOOM The Baby Cakes are sixth in the PCL in June with a.282 batting average, and have scored 85 runs in 15 games, averaging 5.5 per contest after averaging 3.5 in April and 5.4 in May. The Cakes have piled up 11 home runs, 30 doubles and six triples. NOLA S NOLA Austin Nola doubled twice in a game for the second time this season (May 14 vs. Omaha) and drove in a season-high three runs, his most at Triple-A since June 26, 2016 at Memphis. Nola is hitting.347 (31x91) in night games, compared with.167 (4x24) during the day. WHAT A RELIEF Javy Guerra has pitched 8.1 shutout frames in six appearances since being activated from the disabled list. Dating back to his final six outings with the Baby Cakes last season, owns a 17.2-inning scoreless streak. Guerra has not surrendered a hit in converting each of his three save opportunities. ROSTER MOVES Right-hander Nick Wittgren has joined the Cakes on a Major League rehab assignment. Wittgren pitched in seven games for NOLA to open the year prior to being recalled by the Marlins, where he gave up one earned run in his first 15.1 innings. He was placed on the disabled list with a finger contusion on June 2. NAWLINS NOTES The Cakes recorded their 16th come from behind victory, a mark not reached until August 12 last season...
