A Look Back The Minutewomen are fresh off of a six-day visit to Miami, Fla., in which they captured the Blue & Gold Classic championship, hosted by Florida International University. UMass went, 2-2, in pool play but swept its opponents in bracket action to earn the tournament title. The Minutewomen defeated Missouri-Kansas City, 5-1, in the semi final game and FIU, 2-1, in extra-innings to win the Blue & Gold Classic and avenge both of their earlier tournament loses. UMass also played a doubleheader against Illinois-Chicago and split the series with a, 6-2, win and an, 8-2, loss. A Weekend Of Firsts Last weekend, two Minutewomen recorded their first collegiate hits and one rookie scored the first run of her career. Freshman Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) recorded a single up the middle in the 2-1 extra-inning victory over Florida International on March 17, in the championship game of the Blue & Gold Classic. Freshman Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.) had her first collegiate hit on March 19, in the, 6-2, win over Illinois-Chicago with a single to right field. Rookie Kim Harrington (Reading, Mass.) made her collegiate debut as a pinch runner against Fordham on March 16, and scored a run in the 4-1 victory. Triple Threat Senior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) and sophomore Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) have each hit three triples this season to lead the Atlantic 10. Rooney s most recent three-bager was against Missouri-Kansas City on March 18, while Cahalan laced a triple on March 19 against Illinois-Chicago. Turning Up The Heat Defending Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.), got off to a slow start in 2001 with a.132 batting average heading into the Blue & Gold Classic, March 15-17. A stellar weekend performance, however, including a team-high.444 batting average, inflated her cumulative average to.234 overall, a more than 100-point jump in just eight games. It Must Be In The Grass UMass top three hitters in 2001 are none other than center fielder Teri Rooney (.338), right fielder Anna Perey (Chino Va l l e y, A r i z.) (.323) and left fielder Aisha Franke (Philadelphia, Pa.) (.275). The outfield trio represent 37 percent of UMass total hits (59/158), 30 percent of UMass runs scored (25/82) and 25 percent of UMass RBIs (16/63).
