In fond remembrance of our fellow Legionnaires who have answered the call of our Supreme Commander and have entered the Post Everlasting. Charles Lusciandrello Francis Boss Frank Monti John Rodrique Kenneth Leib Raymond Heffernan Fellow Legionnaires, This will be my last article as Commander (actual at this point Past Commander) as Loeky and I leave for our new home on Wednesday May 2 nd. We would like to thank everyone who came to our farewell party and thank all of those who could not make it but offered their well wishes. It was a fantastic night and one that we will cherish for many years. We can not say enough to thank the committee who put it all together as it was perfectly planned and executed, (thank you, thank you, thank you!). We will stay in touch via email and Facebook and hopefully you ll follow our Facebook pages. Again, Thank you all. Now for post business the election of officers has taken place and all officers will be installed on Saturday May 12 th at 7 PM. Unfortunately, due to lack of space in the hall, only incoming and outgoing officers and their guests can attend. I know you wish them the best of luck for the upcoming term and will support them to the hilt as you have supported me in the past. Over the past three-monthly meetings, we have made some changes that were approved by the members in attendance. First the capsule was rolled back to start at $50 with it increasing by $5 each month and will grow to a maximum of $300 until it is won. When this was proposed the capsule was worth over $700 and the potential winner the night of the meeting (John Bono, who always attends), was not present. We also as you know made new residents at the Paramus Veteran s home a member without asking if they wanted to join, well going forward they will be asked before. We will continue to pay for those who are already a member. Over the past 3 months we ve had a few successful social events run by the Ladies Auxiliary (St Patty s Day Dinner-Dance and a trip to the Sands), the Riders annual beefsteak was sold out and a great success and the SAL has run many meet and greets and socials at the lounge. If you have not attended any of these, you ve missed some great events and remember your attendance helps fund our many great programs, and our donations.

(Commander s report continued) There are a few events coming up, so please check out the events and calendar and try to come out to support them. The 1 st up is the SAL Kentucky Derby day, the Riders/SAL Music and BBQ, our Memorial Day Ceremony and the town parade which sailors and marines in for Fleet Week will attend (thanks to the efforts of Peggy Iurato of the Ladies Auxiliary, a Navy Mom and a member of the parade committee), they will be back at the post for some R&R after the parade as well so be sure to stop in and say hello and thank them for their service. June we have the Department Convention which will be NJ s 100 th convention with some great events planned, so if you haven t booked a room, start calling and see if you can because the events planned are terrific, then when we get back there is our flag retirement and Americanism program (always a great event). I could go on but you get the picture, check the calendar and come on out. I want to wish the new post officers success in their new term and want to offer my personal thanks to Commander Ed O Dowd for stepping up to take over the reigns of the post. I know you will all support him and help pitch in as needed because help is always need. And Commander Ed, thanks for allowing me to craft this last Commanders report. As usual I think I ve rambled on enough and will leave with a reminder our next meeting is May 3 rd at 7:30 and that the June meeting is canceled as most will be in Wildwood. For God and Country, we continue to serve Bob Salvini Past Post Commander President s Report Hi Ladies, Are we all on the same page? Winter needs to leave and Spring has to grace our lands. On that I think we can all agree. On Tuesday, February 13th, the Auxiliary hosted the Bergen County Auxiliary meeting at our Post. After the meeting, sandwiches, salads and dessert were served. We had a fairly decent turnout of Unit 170 Auxiliary members which was very nice. We held bingo at the Paramus Veterans Home on March 5th and April 2nd. The Veterans were at the tables way before we arrived raring to go. As always, they had a fantastic time. Our next bingos are May 7th, June 4th, July 10th and August 6th. Volunteers are needed and welcome. Bingo starts at 7:00 p.m. and volunteers are requested to be at the Home by 6:45 p.m. At our March meeting we nominated officers and they were unanimously elected at our April meeting. Our new officers are Roberta O Dowd (President), Madeline Madden (1st Vice President), Patti Diaz (2nd Vice President), Ellen Caroselli (Treasurer), Dale Behnke (Sgt-At- Arms), Peggy Iurato (Chaplain), Fran Muller (Historian) and Dale Coleman (Secretary). On Saturday, March 17th, the Auxiliary hosted their annual St. Patrick s dinner dance. It was a sold-out affair with 121+ people attending. Food was cooked by our very own Mark O Grady and his staff and Jim Morton was our DJ for the evening. He had everyone up and dancing. We had an additional surprise when the Bergen County Pipe and Bugle Corp. showed up and entertained us. Tommy Orr won the hat lottery, Mark O Grady won the 50/50 and Judy Galumbo won the 2 free tickets for next year s dinner/dance. A very special extra thanks to Mark O Grady and his staff, Bob Salvini and Ron Behnke for the beverages, Ellen Caroselli, our bartender, Karen of Kraus Candy and all who donated door prizes, to the decorating and setup committee and, of course to Dale Behnke and her crew for making it all possible. A great time was had by all.

(President s report continued) On April 18th, the Post 170 Family held a farewell/retirement party for Bob and Loeky who are moving to Florida. There were over 200 people in attendance. Tommy Walker was our emcee, dj and entertainer for the evening, the Bergen County Pipes & Bugle Corp. performed at the beginning of the evening and even had Bob up on the dance floor leading them. Speeches were given by different organizations and our Post officers and gifts were presented. All who attended had a great time and I know that Bob and Loeky were sincerely touched by the evening. We started our Poppy distribution at Shop-Rite in Rochelle Park on April 21st and envelopes are going out in the mail as we speak. Thanks to all who stood outside at Shop-Rite and also those who stuffed envelopes. Remember when you receive your envelope to please be generous the proceeds go to our Veterans. On April 22nd, we took off for the Sands Casino in Bethlehem after breakfast at the Post. As always, there were drinks and snacks on the bus. The 50/50 was won by the Fitzpatricks; the seat game was played and Dot Bartke and Skip shared the winnings and the horse race was won by our own Queen B Dale Behnke. A great time was had by all although not all of us were winners. Coming up On May 28th, the Memorial Day events start at 8:00 a.m. with Church Services at Sacred Heart Church followed by the American Legion Post 170 Memorial Day Services at the Monuments by the Midland School. If you plan to march, line up is at 11:00 a.m. at the Mack Building on Passaic Street. This is an event you will not want to miss. We will have Sailors and Marines from Fleet Week as well as Veterans from the Paramus Veterans Home, the Police Pipe & Drums of Bergen County, the Blue Chip Chorus and more joining us at the Post and in the parade. After the parade, the Committee will provide hot dogs, soda, popcorn, a DJ and a clown for the children at our Post. The Convention at Wildwood starts June 6th thru 10th. Friday afternoon is the 170 Family cocktail party at 3:00 p.m. There is no cost but it is a potluck event so everyone is expected to bring some food to share. We also need people to pitch in setting up and cleaning up. Saturday is the Parade. There is a tram car for those unable to march. More events are listed on the Events page. Our next meeting is May 10th. For God and Country, Roberta O Dowd SAL & Family We want to salute and thank our past SAL Vice Commander Bob Salvini for all his hard work and dedication to SAL SQUAD 170. Bob will be sorely missed. We want to congratulate n look forward to working with our New Post Commander Ed O'Dowd to making SAL SQUAD 170 Even better.
