(Hayward Field) @ JACK CHRISTIANSEN INVITATIONAL April 21, 2007 (All Day) Fort Collins, Colo. (Jack Christiansen Track) For the second straight weekend, the Air Force track and field team splits up for competitions in two different states. The majority of the team will head to Fort Collins, Colo., for the annual Jack Christiansen Invitational on Saturday, April 21, while 19 Falcons head to Eugene, Ore., for the Oregon Invitational on Friday-Saturday, April 20-21. SCHEDULING 101: The Oregon Invitational begins at 5:20 p.m. on Friday, April 20, with the women's 5000-meter run and continues until 9 p.m. Action resumes Saturday, April 21, at 1:55 p.m., with the men's discus. The final event - men's 4x400- meter relay - is scheduled to run at 4:55 p.m. Saturday's Jack Christiansen Invitational begins at 9 a.m., with the men's hammer throw. The first event on the track will be the women's 3000-meter steeplechase at 11:30 a.m. MEET THE COMPETITION: Air Force's competition at the Jack Christiansen Invitational will include Black Hills State, Chadron State, Colorado, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State, Mesa State, Metro State, Northern Colorado, Regis, South Dakota Tech, UC-Colorado Springs and Wyoming. JUST DUCKY: Three members of the women's team will head to Oregon, along with 16 members of the men's team. Ally Romanko, Brittany Morreale and Olivia Korte will join Kevin Hawkins, Calvin Glass, Richard Elmore, Sebastian Ortiz, Dan Castle, Jason Beck, Josh van Wyngaarden, Justin Mason, Ian McFarland, Matt Williams, Sean Houseworth, Joe Curran, Kenny Grosselin, Parker Cowles, Devin Hart and Marcus Wells. THIS SEEMS SO FAMILIAR: Just one meet after setting the Academy record in the shot put, freshman Sara Neubauer rewrote it. With a throw of 50'2¾", she set a new program standard to take second at the Mesa Classic on April 13. By improving her throw by over seven feet this season, Neubauer becomes the Mountain West Conference leader in that event. GOING UP, UP, UP: Senior Brian Walsh was the highest scoring collegiate decathlete at the Mt. SAC Decathlon on April 12. With 7334 points, Walsh not only finished third overall, but tallied the second-best decathlon total in Academy history. Those 7334 points is a Senior Class record, as well as a career improvement by over 400 points. Currently ranked fourth in the nation, Walsh is second on the Academy's all-time record books behind Marcus Nichols' 7723 points. GET OUT THE BROOMS: Freshman Dan Paladino threw a career-best 183'5" to win the hammer throw at the Mesa Classic. The NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark is the seventh-best distance in Academy history. Paladino led an Air Force sweep of the top three spots as sophomore Kirk Devine placed second (177'4") and senior Matt Pinson took third (156'8") MAKING HIS MARK: Freshman Nick Frawley posted the team's best finish at the Sun Angel Classic, clearing 16'2¾" in the pole vault. That mark was the second-best height by a collegiate athlete and tied for ninth on the Academy's all-time list. LINDEMAN NAMED TO TEAM USA STAFF: Air Force track and field head coach Ralph Lindeman has been named the Head Manager for the Team USA men's track and field squad that will compete at the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Osaka, Japan, USA Track and Field announced on April 12. WHO'S ON FIRST?: Air Force collected seven first-place finishes at the Colorado College Invitational on April 14. Kevin Hawkins won the 400-meter dash, while Scott Balcao won the 5000-meter run. Dane Jansson took first in the shot put, while the "A" squad posted the fastest time in the 4x400-meter relay. On the women's side, Ally Romanko picked up a pair of first-place finishes on the track, as she won both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. The Falcons also received a first-place finish from classmate Madison Burgess, who won the long jump. Olivia Korte named MWC Athlete of the Week (March 21) A WEEKEND OF WINNERS: Senior Ayana Floyd-James won the 100-meter dash at the Sun Angel Classic, while classmate Dierra Poland won the 100-meter hurdles. ON DECK: Once again, Air Force splits up for a pair of competitions. Selected members of the team will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays on April 26-28, while the rest of the squad heads to the Wyoming Invitational on April 28.

The men won the inaugural meet against its fellow service academies, while the women took second. The men won eight of the 11 track events, including all five sprint races and relays, while the women accounted for wins in three of the four distance races and five of the eight field events. SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION: At the Military Classic, junior Travis Picou won two individual events, while running the second leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay with senior Nick Luina, junior John Payne and sophomore Kellen Curry. Curry won the 110-meter hurdles and finished second to Picou in the 100-meter dash. Luina, who accounted for a runnerup finish to Picou in the 200-meter dash, won the 400-meter dash and was also member of the 4x400-meter relay team with Payne, junior Kevin Hawkins and senior Brian Walsh. SHAVING OFF THE SECONDS: With a winning 100-meter dash time of 10.60 at the Military Classic, junior Travis Picou set a new Junior Class record in that race. Already holding the Freshman and Sophomore Class marks in that event, Picou broke Russ Clemons' time of 10.64 that was set in 1976 - eight years before Picou was born. ONE AND TWO: Air Force took the top-two spots in four running events at VMI. The Falcons walked away with the most points allowed in the 100-meter dash (Travis Picou and Kellen Curry), 200-meter dash (Picou and Nick Luina), 800-meter run (Kevin Hawkins and Calvin Glass) and 300-meter steeplechase (Matt Williams and Jason Beck). In addition, Sebastian Ortiz finished third in the 800-meter run, giving the Falcons a complete sweep of the top spots. DOUBLE DIPPING: Sophomore Kirk Devine picked up a pair of event wins from the field at the VMI Military Classic, taking first in the hammer throw and discus throw. Devine led a one-two Air Force punch in the hammer, as freshman Dan Paladino finished second. TOPPING OUT: On the men's side at the Rob Upton Invitational, freshman Nick Frawley was the top Air Force scorer, as he placed second in the pole vault with a height of 15'11". That was the best mark by any collegiate competitor. MAKING HISTORY: Freshman Dan Paladino rounded out the Falcons' scorers at Colorado State with an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw. Recording a distance of 175'9", Paladino set a new Freshman Class record, in addition to tallying the 10th-best mark in Academy history. TAKING TWO: Junior Matt Gensic and sophomore Skylar Morgan were the top collegiate finishers at the Glenn Morris Multi-Events. Gensic's combined total of 6327 points was the best of any collegiate athlete and the 10th-best score in Academy history. Morgan accounted for 6117 points to finish the 10-event competition in third. TWO OUTTA THREE AIN'T BAD: Air Force took two of the top three spots in a pair of events at the Potts Invitational. Junior Travis Picou crossed the finish line in a regional qualifying time of 21.04 to win the 200-meter dash, while senior Nick Luina finished third behind a time of 21.53. Sophomore Harmon Gage won the javelin throw with a career-best 191'6", while senior Brandon Murphy took third with a distance of 175'11". HOW "DEVINE": Sophomore Kirk Devine claimed first-place honors in the discus throw at the Potts Invitational with a Regional Qualifying Mark. With a toss of 169'7", Devine's distance is a regional qualifying mark and the eighth-best time in Academy history. In addition, Devine finished fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 176'2". That mark is ninth on the Academy's all-time list. Her throw of 48'4" displaced the previous mark of 47'9¾" that was set by senior teammate Olivia Korte two years ago. ONE-TWO-THREE: Senior Olivia Korte claimed the collegiate equivalent of a gold, silver and bronze at the Military Classic. In addition to winning the discus throw, she finished second in the hammer throw and third in the shot put. MORE NEWS FROM THE FIELD: Freshman Sara Neubauer and senior Olivia Korte accounted for two event wins at VMI, but the women's team wasn't done picking up first-place finishes from the field. Freshman Katie Weber won the javelin throw, while fellow freshman Melissa Beerse took first in the pole vault. And in her first meet of the season, senior Dawn Higginbotham won the high jump. GOING THE DISTANCE: The Air Force women also had an impressive showing on the track, winning three of the four distance races. Junior Kelly Robinson won the 1500-meter run, while freshman Ally Romanko took first in the 800-meter run and classmate Brittany Morreale took first in the 5000-meter run. MORE ON MOREALE: As the only athlete to clear the 18-minute mark in the Military Classic's 5000-meter run, freshman Brittany Morreale accounted for the eighth-best time ever at the Academy, while topping the field by 16 seconds. THE FIRST HAS FALLEN: The season s first outdoor record fell as freshman Melissa Beerse set a new Academy standard in the pole vault on March 31. Beerse won the event with a Regional Qualifying Height of 12'5¾". That mark broke Ana Maria Ortega's 2001 record of 12'0½". The mark was also a new Freshman Class record, breaking the previous mark of 12'4¼" that Beerse set while setting the Academy's indoor record back in January. BUT, WAIT! THERE'S MORE: Melissa Beerse wasn't the only women's pole vaulter to impact the Academy's record book on March 24. With a new Sophomore Class record, Michelle Fryling cleared 11'3¾" to finish second in the event. IMPACT HOLES: Freshman Sara Neubauer finished second in the shot put at the Rob Upton Invitational with a throw of 42'5½" - a mark that is fifth on the Academy's all-time list. Fellow freshman Katie Weber threw a 136'5" in the javelin to take third. Weber's first collegiate throw was the sixth-best throw in Academy history. ONE WEEK-ONE HONOR: Senior Olivia Korte was named the MWC Athlete of the Week on March 21 for her stellar performance at the Potts Invitational. Korte was the top collegiate finisher in all three of her throwing events, including the overall winner in two. Her winning discus throw was a regional qualifying mark and the third-best throw of the short outdoor season. COURTIN' KORTE: Senior Olivia Korte picked up a pair of first-place finishes at the Potts Invitational. She took the top spot in the shot put with a distance of 45'7¾" and won the discus throw behind a throw of 167'2" - a regional qualifying mark that was over 17 feet better than the runner-up. In addition, Korte picked up a third-place mark in the hammer, behind a throw of 156'2". MOVING ON UP: At the Potts Invitational, Air Force had two incursions into the women's all-time record book. In the javelin throw, senior Casey Bayne finished third with a regional qualifying throw of 154'6", which is third-all-time. Sophomore Michelle Fryling improved her position in the all-time pole vault standings, as she cleared a career-best 11'1" to finish second. That mark, which improved her fourth-place ranking in the program's record book, is a new Sophomore Class record.
