2 P a g e 2 O w l A c h i e v e m e n t s Eyes on Owls Travis Mahoney completed his final outdoor track and field competition at the USA Olympic Team Trials. Prior to this event Mahoney finished 5th at the NCAA Championships receiving All- American status. At this race Mahoney suffered an Achilles ankle injury after stepping off a steeplechase barrier. With a maximum of 24 participants in the Olympic Trials steeplechase event and only 1 of 5 collegiate athletes, Mahoney looked forward to this moment. His Injury was obviously interfering but he pressed through the pain to finish his race. While he did not advance to the final round of competition, Mahoney embraced this rare and exciting experience. This season he returns for his final cross country and indoor track and field seasons, having earned the honor of 2012 All American and Olympic Trials participant. Indoor Atlantic 10 Margo Britton was the only first place finisher for the Owls at the women s championship in the shot put event. Following her lead were second place finishes by Iwugo in the 400 and Stephens in the 800. Third place finishers were Owens in the shot and discus, Smith in the 800, LaRoche in the pentathlon and Iwugo in the 200 meter dash. She then joined teammates Davis-Timothy, Roberts and West for 4x400 meter relay points. The 4x800 (Davis, Barletta, Hedin, Kellar) and DMR (Davis, Wilson, Barletta, Kellar) relays took 8th while the 4x400 relay of Harding, Wilson, McGee and Myers finished 5th. McGee also took a 5th place in the 400 while Damian in the same event finished 6th.Also Kellar finished 6th for the 1000 meters while Davis took 7th in the same event. Finishing up the point total for the team was the throwing group of Littlepage and Maccie. To top the teams successes Mahoney was named athlete of the year. Indoor ECAC & IC4A The women s ECAC 4x800 relay of Gocht, Smith, Wilson and Stephens had a 6th place finish to grab a few points for the team. Success requires your maximum effort. Be successful. NCAA First Round This time around, five competitors made it from the Temple team to the East Regional meet. Among the five was the lone female and freshman standout Margo Britton who competed in both shot put and discus events. Other freshman included high jumper Darryl McDuffie and triple jumper Derek Holland. Sophomore Gabe Pickett also competed in the triple jump event while senior Travis Mahoney compete in the steeplechase event. Placing 8th overall, Mahoney was able to move on to the final round of competition in Des Moines, Iowa. NCAA Championship Mahoney competed at Drake University Stadium in the final championship. After having the experience of competing last year, he learned how compete on this level. As runners pulled away from him, Mahoney maintained his focus and stayed calm as he ran into the 5th place finish. His finish makes him Temple s first First Team All American. He went on yet again to his final stop of the season at the USA Olympic team trials in Eugene Oregon. (See pg 2 Eyes on Owls)
4 P a g e 4 N a t i o n a l S p o t l i g h t Cullen Davis The freshman of the Temple Owls track and field teams made history, bringing five individual qualifiers to the Junior National Meet. Dubrow, showed great promise from the cross country season through indoor and into the outdoor season. Her 3000k and 5000k races qualified her for the meet where she finished 11th and 15th, respectively. Kaycon s steeplechase effort placed him 15th as well, while Davis (left) placed 14th Derek Holland in the 1500m run, only three seconds away from his personal best of the season. In the field events, Holland, (right) who made huge leaps and qualified for the first round of the NCAA championships, finished only 6 cm from his personal best in the triple jump placing 7th overall. A big throw for 6th, Britton who also competed in the NCAA first round, finished 14th in the young women s Shot put and Discus throw events respectively. The fresh- man did an outstanding job this year and show great promise of more to come. XC Highlights (Cont from pg. 1) USA Olympic Trials Travis Mahoney and Coach Shameka Marshall faired well at the 2012 Olympic Trials held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Out of the 24 competitors in the long jump event, Marshall s first attempt qualified her for the next round of jumps two days later. With only half the competitors remaining, and given three more jumps Marshall was at it again. She made it through this round and the field was shortened yet again to only 8 athletes. This group would determine who would make the top 3 for the American team in the London Olympics. Marshall s final three jumps did not improve as she remains top 8 in the US for 5 plus years. Marshall was grateful for the opportunity and is rooting for friends and former teammates who are in London. (Mahoney s Story see Pg. 2) was Ben Thomas, Philip Fanz, Geoff Barletta and freshman Cullen Davis who stepped up to solidify the teams 10th place finish overall. The Owls bettered their efforts by placing 5th out of 16 teams at the IC4A Regional meet. Leading the way was Kellar in 16th place followed by Thomas, Kaycon, Fanz and Barletta. The Women s Cross Country team was led by newcomer Jenna Dubrow beginning the first meet in record-setting fashion. This marked the highest place finish for an Owl in 38 years at this meet. The team commanded 32nd place overall with sophomores Taylor Goldsworthy and Erin Casey following Dubrow. The trend continued at the Atlantic 10 Championship where Dubrow took first, followed by Anna Pavone and Goldsworthy. Another record-setting run at the ECAC championship, as the Owls had their highest placement in the program s history, placing 15th. Dubrow led the pack for the 6th time of the season, while strong finishers Goldsworthy and Dorantes completed the top three.
