gxsquash September 2013 Welcome to the new season The school holidays are drawing to a close and the football season is already well under way! Time to dig out your old squash racket and renew your gxsquash membership for the coming year! October 6 is membership renewal night so why not come along to renew your membership, sample some refreshment and watch the final of the Summer Handicap Tournament? New Court Booking System The Committee will be implementing a new court booking system during October. This system will commence operation on the weekend following the membership renewal. The new system will operate in much the same way as the original system with a terminal in the club and the ability to book courts over the web. The new system will offer a number of advantages to the club and members: Instantaneous credit purchase from the club or over the web I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E 2 Get Playing! 2 Summer Handicap Tournament 2 Online Purchase of Credit 2 Squash 2020 2 Introducing Guests 3 Squash Leagues 3 Squash Ladder 3 Team News 4 Club House 4 Club Night 4 Lost and Found 5 Honours Board 6 Junior News 6 Memorial Centre News Keyfob access to the club and when logging into the booking terminal Court lighting and heating control Members will receive a short document describing the new system and demonstrations will be organised for the evening of the Summer Handicap Tournament finals. Membership Membership continues to grow and has reached our highest level for several years; a quarter of the members are new to the club this year. Once again, Membership fees for the coming season (2013/14) are to be held at the same level as the previous year, probably the lowest annual squash fees in the country. STOP PRESS: Squash misses out on Olympic status See full story on page 2. continued on page 2

Membership rates are currently: Adults: 98 U25's: 48 U-18's: 20 Families: 140 Corporates: 140 (4 players) Please Note: We can only accept cash or cheques in payment of Membership! Court fees also remain unchanged at 2 for off-peak and 3 for peak times for a 45 minute court. Renewal night is Sunday 6 th October at 7.00pm when the final of the Handicap Competition will be held. Come along, pay your subscription, pick up your key and watch the Finals. This year, the lock on the front door will not be changed on renewal night. New keys will be issued which will come into effect when the new booking system is implemented later in the month. If you cannot make it to the membership renewal evening, send your fees to: John Mayfield, 9 Valentine Way, Chalfont St. Giles. HP8 4JB. Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope. You can send in your application at any time before or after 6 October. Please check your details on the club's database and let us know if anything has changed - in particular, please let us know if your email address has changed. Get Playing! What with all of these members, you d think it would be difficult to book a court or that our tournaments and leagues were heavily over-subscribed but frankly we re a bit baffled. Does non-active sports club membership grant you some form of tax exemption? Is there a swingers club operating under the guise of membership? However it may be, we are keen to encourage greater use of the courts and are considering various options including racketball evenings and possible Ladies Nights. If you have any suggestions as to how this might be accomplished then please share it with the Committee. Summer Handicap Tournament The Rob Milliner Summer Handicap Tournament will commence over the last weekend of September with the final rounds over the first weekend in October. The final will be held on Sunday 6 th to coincide with membership renewal. The handicap tournaments are great fun for everyone so get your entry in now. Register using the list on the noticeboard or via the form on the club website (follow the link from the home page). The final of last year s tournament was contested by Robert Rickman and David Scott. In the plate competition for players ejected in the 1 st round, Paul Adams beat Andy Youngs. There will be no entry fee for this competition so why not sign up today? Add your name to the list on the noticeboard or sign up using the form on the club website. Online Purchase of Credit Once the new booking system has been implemented in October, credit purchased online will be applied instantaneously to your account without having to wait for action by a third party. Members will be able to purchase credit over the web or via the new terminal in the club. Squash 2020 Squash will not be introduced as an Olympic sport during the 2020 games in Tokyo. After a 30 month campaign in which a very strong case was made for our sport, squash lost out to wrestling in the final vote. The shortlist of wrestling, basketball/softball and squash campaigned right up to the last minute and the end poll result was wrestling (49), baseball/softball (24) and squash (22). Introducing Guests Members are reminded that they are entitled to introduce non-members to play at the club up to 6 times a year. When doing so, continued on page 3

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to join the Committee or help around the club. Speak to a Committee member about it. AGM We held an AGM on 9 th May and the minutes of the meeting can be found on the club website at the address below: http://www.gxsquash.org.uk/public/docume nts/gxsc_agm_2013.pdf Follow gxsquash on social media Tweet @gxsquash to tell us about your latest match or to share your thoughts about any aspect of the Club. Why not tweet your progress in the Handicap Tournament? Messages will be visible on the club website. You can also keep up with news on our facebook page. Are you over 55 years of age and interested in representing gxsquash? Email ian.nunn@nunn-hayward.com please make sure that you select the Visitor booking option on the court booking website to pay for your guest. We are happy that members should be able to continue this practice as this is can attract more members to the club but please do not abuse it. If you are regularly playing with a visitor, you should be encouraging them to join the fold. Squash Leagues The Winter Leagues will re-commence at the start of October. Make sure you have renewed your membership to ensure your place in the leagues. Members who withdrew from the leagues for the Summer should add their name to the list on the noticeboard, email leagues@gxsquash.org.uk or use the form on the club website before the end of September to guarantee their place in the October league. The new booking system will be aware of the leagues and members will be able to enter their league scores via the terminal in the club house. Historic league records will be maintained on the club website where members will also be able register for entry into the leagues, maintain their status in the league and view their complete league history. Squash Ladder The ladder continues to entertain a small group of members. Remember, when you join the ladder, you are able to challenge anyone else on the ladder (subsequent challenges are restricted to 4 places above your current position). You need to be registered on the club website and also separately on the ladder to take part. Team News continued from page 2 1 st team: The 1 st Team had another successful season in Division 1 of the Bucks Leagues last year and secured another season of top flight squash for the coming Make sure you wear the correct footwear on court! Help us to keep our courts safe and clean by encouraging others to wear the right footwear.

year. This will be our 5th consecutive season in Division 1 under the leadership of Stewart Hefferman. Vintage: The Vintage Team had a difficult time in the Middlesex Leagues last year after losing key players from the squad. Team captain Ian Nunn is taking responsibility for the team once more and is keen to hear from players aged 55 and over who are interested in representing the club. Are you over 55 years of age and interested in representing gxsquash in the Middlesex Vintage Leagues? If so, Ian Nunn would like to hear from you. Why not contact him now? Email: ian.nunn@nunn-hayward.com Mobile: 07711 846772 Racketball Have you considered playing racketball? It is the UK s fastest growing sport played on a squash court and with similar rules using a larger ball and a shorter racket. Racketball is generally less intense than squash and has a lesser impact on the body though the rallies tend to be longer. We are intending to invest in some equipment so you can try your hand at the sport so watch out for further announcements. Club House The Committee has continued with its plan of improving the club house with the most noticeable development being the installation of revolutionary LED lighting. They give a very clean bright light and are expected to last over 10 years so hopefully we ve seen the last of those dark corners when multiple tubes have blown. The court walls will be patched and cleaned around the end of the month which means that we will lose the use of the daytime courts for a day. Watch out for further details. An Accident Record file has been placed in the club. Please use it to record any incidents in the club. Club Night Club Night is starting up again!! This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience by playing people from different leagues and to mix socially with other members of the club. New members are especially welcomed. We play American scoring in order to keep the players moving and/or a fixed time system depending on numbers. New Day: Three SUNDAY evenings scheduled this year, 6 Oct, 3 Nov, 8 Dec. New Time: 5:00 to 6:30 pm. Please note: to avoid too many or little numbers, please put your name on the list in the notice board in club or contact Ainsley, if you wish to play. Max no 12. Any queries, ring Ainsley on 07770 611492 Did You See? The club was the beneficiary of some prominent free advertising with the posting of this billboard on Station Approach in March and April. The bilboard and artwork were provided FOC courtesy of Primesight Ltd and was organised on our behalf by a club member. Lost and found A surprising variety of kit collects around the club. This is mainly towels and clothing but there has also been a racket lying in the gents changing room for a couple of weeks. Any items remaining by the end of September will be disposed of. If you think this may include a precious item of your own, then contact a member of the Committee to see if it can be located or consider it gone forever.

Juniors The Juniors (a Junior is anyone under 19) have had a very good year and have developed their skills as well as having gained some good experience of playing a variety of opponents. 3 juniors have joined the senior leagues and have managed to hold their own amongst our older members A group of Juniors entered the Bucks junior tournament last September all performed way above their mark. In addition our club was invited to play against other Bucks juniors in a friendly tournament and came away with a large medal haul. We also have 2 juniors, Vivek Gulati & Declan Shortt who have been invited to the Bucks Team Squads in their respective age groups. They were put through various tests of fitness, squash nous and mental agility. We wish them well this season and hope they are selected for the Bucks teams This year we have joined the lowest division of the Bucks league to develop a team spirit and build up some inter-club rivalry. We will be playing these games on Sundays Sadly, as Squash is not an Olympic sport and doesn t get much television exposure, we struggle to get numbers. Rakesh Gulati (07887 744505 rakesh@gulati.uk.net) is keen to take on another 4 Juniors so that we can play against the other clubs with a full complement and allow for some team rotation. There will be the usual apres squash goodies of crisps The intention is to meet Saturday late morning where a fully qualified England Squash coach will be present. Depending upon demand a second session after school will be held on Friday s. This will enable us to capture any persons using football as an excuse. Just for the record, the England squash team fares better than the England football team and we don t pay them the many millions either. Memorial Centre News The Memorial Centre will be holding a number of events over the coming months: Jumble Sale: Quiz Night: Burns Night Supper: Quiz Night 27/28 September 5 November 24 January The Squash Club will be entering a team in the Quiz Night on Friday 15 November so if you are interested in taking part, contact David Sledge (07788 813627, dsledge123@gmail.com). There is no limit to the number of teams we can enter. Jumble Sale The Memorial Centre is holding their annual Jumble Sale over the weekend of 27 th to 28 th September. They will need volunteers to help with clearing up after the Jumble Sale so if you can help, please call the Memorial Centre Office () and let them know - don t forget to mention the Squash Club. Housekeeping Please help us to keep the club tidy by clearing away your drinking cups when you have finished with them. Also, if you are the last person to leave the club at any time of the day: Turn off all the lights Ensure that the front door is locked Please help us to keep our club secure and our costs down. Make sure you wear the correct footwear on court! Help us to keep our courts safe and clean by encouraging others to wear the right footwear.
