UNLV Dance Program - Overview PURPOSE To serve as public relations ambassadors of intercollegiate athletics and the University; to uphold, reflect and project the goals and ideals of the University; to appear at the University activities, functions and programs, at charitable and public causes to promote intercollegiate athletics and the University. The intercollegiate athletics Dance Team supports the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' primary mission of education, research and public service. UNLV's department of Intercollegiate Athletics measures success by how the program contributes to the overall development of the athlete as a student and as a good citizen. In all matters and policies concerning cheer and dance at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, it is required for each squad member to execute good citizenship and sportsmanship while representing UNLV. DANCE TEAM GOALS & OBJECTIVES Facilitate academic success through scholarship opportunities Engage in a variety of public service projects Provide leadership opportunities to diverse audiences. To perform dance routines with perfect athleticism. Maintain a unified and respected cheer and dance program, which is recognized locally and nationally by offering an effective scholarship fund, implementing a physical fitness program, competing on a national level, and providing a qualified and committed staff. To lead the cheers; to raise the level of fan support for intercollegiate athletics; to entertain in a positive manner and to give visual support for the team; to solicit that support from UNLV fans and to project that support to the University and its teams. To keep the crowd s attention/focus on the field or floor where intercollegiate activities are taking place, and for entertainment and competitive purposes. UNLV representative and team members will conduct themselves in a proper manner (no violence, alcohol, drugs, narcotics, etc), and in accordance with all NCAA, Mountain West Conference and University rules and regulations. 2
Frequently Asked Questions 2011 2012 Practice Schedule All practices are mandatory Monday 7pm 10pm Wednesday 7pm 10pm Friday 7:00am 10:00am **Practice dates and times are subject to change. Final practice times will be given at tryouts. Do you hold any open gyms before tryouts? Yes, we will hold two open gyms. See page 4 for more information. Do you offer scholarships? Scholarships are available to members who have been on the team for one full year and have maintained a 3.0 GPA and above. The total award amount received is based on your GPA. How much time do we get off for Thanksgiving and Christmas? You will only be given 5-7 days off during the winter break. This is due to the fact that 1/3 of the basketball games take place during this time and we compete at UDA Collegiate Nationals in January. In addition, we may ask (depending on schedule) for the team not to leave for the Thanksgiving break. What is required over summer? Summer events will be required for all in town members. All new members must report back before July 18th and old members on August 1st. What if I don t have all of the requirements? You are still encouraged to tryout. It is a great experience and you will know what to expect for the following year. Are we allowed to work? Yes, as long as it does not conflict with our schedule. What are the fees involved? New and returning members will be expected to pay a non- refundable general fee to be a member of the team. Payments will be due May 1st, June 1st, July 1st, and August 1st. Payment must be paid in full and on time or a late charge of $50 will be applied to EACH late payment. Additional information will be provided at tryouts. Each member of the team is responsible for collecting a minimum donation of $350 from the community by August 1st via check or money order. What sports do we cheer/dance for? Football and Men s Basketball Do you compete? Yes the UNLV Rebel Girls compete on a yearly basis at both the UDA and USA National Competition. How did you do at competition? 2007 16th at UDA D- IA Hip Hop 2008 3rd at UDA D- IA Hip Hop & 1st at USA Hip Hop 2010 4th at UDA D- IA Hip Hop & 1st at USA Hip Hop 2011 5th at UDA D- IA Hip Hop How many spots do you have? Anywhere between 12 and 20 Do you travel? We travel to the NCAA Basketball Tournament and National Competitions. 3
Open Gym Information Participants that plan on trying out are encouraged to attend at least one open gym. This is an opportunity for the Head Coach to see you in a setting other than Tryouts. High school juniors are also welcome to participate and learn about the program at open gyms. DVD Tryout Information Incoming freshman are encouraged to attend tryouts If you are an out- of- state participant or have special circumstance you may submit a DVD DVD must be submitted to Marca Decastroverde no later than April 9, 2010 DVD must include a jazz routine of 8 8 counts, a hip hop routine of 8-8 counts, and all required elements. General Tryout Information: What to bring: Tryouts are closed to the general public 2 TYPED letters of recommendation from previous coaches, teachers, etc. Must include contact information. There will be two cuts at tryouts. The first cut will take place on the morning of April 16th and the second will take place during the evening of April 16th to determine the final team.
