RMMBHA MISSION STATEMENT The Ridge Meadows Minor Ball Hockey Association (RMMBHA) is committed to the organization of a safe and positive program for players in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and surrounding areas to learn sportsmanship, player etiquette, and team play. Participants are of varying ball hockey experience and skill level and it is important that all participants are able to gain equal enjoyment from being involved. The program will also provide an opportunity for children of all ages and gender to keep fit, develop ball hockey skills, and most importantly, have fun in a safe and competitive environment. As an Association, to offer minor ball hockey as a foundation for children to grow and develop that will enable them to enjoy life-long participation and friendships through the game of ball hockey. 3

1) PASSING/RECEIVING STATION -6 to 7 minutes Explain value of game passing involves heads up ball movement and players moving to open space. This teaches sharing the ball with your team mates and moving towards your end goal of scoring. Develop passing and receiving skills on both forehand and backhand Wrist pass Sweep pass Receiving pass using stick absorb pass, use feet, show hand position on stick Make sure blade of stick is on the floor. Cup or tilt blade towards incoming pass to prevent ball from bouncing back, ahead or over the blade. Don t hold stick too tightly. Allow some give Constantly try to move into open space Lead the player (don t pass into feet) Practice Plan or Lesson 1) Giving pass one on one stationary key teach point o Point stick and follow thru to other player s stick o Receive pass cushion ball and tilt stick controlling ball o Hand position and body/feet 2) Flip Pass one on one stationary o Flip in air and other player receives with hand knocking down to stick controlling ball for pass back 3) Give and Go Passing o Lead pass in front of player 4) Transition into multiple players o Move around the floor and passing ball o Triangle pass with 3 players moving around the floor Rotate to next station! 4

2) BALL HANDLING STATION - 6 to 7 minutes Explain value to game ball handling teaches us to protect the ball, maintain possession, allows us to beat players one on one and or fakes out goalie for shot on net Stick handle while moving and work on head and body fakes. Two hands on stick when stick handling around a player One hand on stick when pushing ball forward on a rush (no players around) Hand position lower bottom hand to gain more control Keep elbows out (away from body) allow the wrist to perform the work of stick handling Keep ball close to heal of stick for maximum control Ball handling in stationary position Sprint back within one hand pushing ball forward Head fakes one way go the other Figure eight forehand/back hand drop shoulder on transition / through 8 FWD Cupping ball ball control Practice Plan or Lesson 1) Set up two lines and ball handle through cones (create race for fun part) 2) Set up two cones in front of stationary player and have the player move the ball around in a figure eight teaching them to use their wrist action for ball handling 3) Set up cones and have player go around each cone full circle cupping ball fwd and back hand 4) Set up a coach at one end of drill have player ball handle toward him and head fake right go to left Rotate to next station! 5

3) SHOOTING STATION - 6 to 7 minutes Explain value to game You want to learn how to shoot the ball quickly and accurately in the various situations that arise during games. Accuracy and the element of surprise speed of the ball is determined by the speed and weight applied to the stick at the moment of impact with the ball. Spread handle out on stick one high at top one just below middle of stick Keep ball close to body Lean over ball Correct height of stick Front foot facing target Blade must go 90 to the net in order to shoot accurately Aim through the eyes of the ball not your eyes. Practice Plan or Lesson 1) Stationary shooting against wall All at one time (make some noise on boards ) 2) One timer from coach in corner 3) Shot on fly 4) Wrist shot stationary Rotate to next station! 6

4) CHECKING STATION - 6 to 7 minutes Explain value to game You want to learn how to control and maintain a good gap control pressuring player outside. Maintain pressure on back side of player in corner or wall battles allow another player to take ball away. Back checking Head up watch players chest 1 on 1 Keep player outside at all times Shoulder to shoulder lines One hand up and one hand on stick (left hand at top of stick for right handers) Sticks in lanes Body position and gap control Running with stick on hand only. Stick in front ready to block a pass or receive a pass. Practice plan or lesson 1) 1 on 1 practice drill first no ball head up watch players chest not ball 2) 1 on 1 using a ball maintain inside pressure 3) Corner or wall battle - Dump in corner show body position pin on back side containing player with one hand on back other hand on stick trying to fish ball out. 4) 2 on 1 maintain middle position forces player to shoot bad angle, stick in lane preventing pass across to other player. Rotate to next station! 7

Session; Practice/Game Time 1 hour 30 minutes skills and drills (set up 4 stations) 30 minutes game fun & tactical positional play Coaches would stay at each station for the whole 30 mins and players would rotate around them learning each skill. (offer stickers or some type of token each station completed) 30 min game time allotment Teams switch after 15mins winner plays winner and looser players loose(offering balance or like teams to play each other) 1 min shifts blown down by one coach all change start with face off Program notes and feedback Pick a theme for each practice Include games and races Have stickers for rewards Game time practice Fox in Box set-up Tape floor or use cones as guide to players Create triangles Evaluation process Team Blue starts station 1 Team Red starts station 2 Team White starts station 3 Team Black starts station 4 8
