1 JUNIOR CRUSADERS HOCKEY GENERAL POSITIONING GUIDE PEE WEE 4 PURPLE In no other sport does a player go from playing defense to offense or offense to defense quicker than hockey In any given shift this may occur several times Each player regardless of their position has both offensive and defensive responsibilities This guidebook shows the basic responsibilities Any player having a question about the material should review the questions with a coach 1

2 Hockey has THREE zones 2

3 DANGER BOX DEFENSIVE ZONE Do not shoot the puck into the Danger Box noted in red in our zone The other team can more easily get the puck and take shots at our goalie Pass the puck to a Crusaders wing along the boards or shoot the puck to the boards If you are ever unsure of what to do with the puck in our defensive zone shoot the puck to the boards do not shoot the puck into our Danger box 3

6 CENTER SKATING LANE The center has the biggest skating area of all the positions. C 6

7 CENTER RESPONSIBILITY IN ZONES A big part of the Center s job is to support the puck. The Center may go into any area of the ice to help a team mate get the puck. 7

The responsibilities of the wings in our zone are to prevent the other teams defensemen from getting the puck, to be ready to receive LW a break out pass or skate the puck up themself Note: The wings do not collapse back into C the corners of our zone. 17 DEFENSE Puck in center players in center When the puck is in the middle of the ice in our zone our defensemen should be in the area in front of our net near the other teams players to break up passes and block shots 17

18 DEFENSIVE ZONE RIGHT Puck moves to right players shift to right When the puck is in our zone and we are being attacked we always have one defensemen in front of our net In this example the puck is in the right corner The right defense goes to the puck The left defensemen is protecting in front of the net 18

20 DEFENSE in OFFENSIVE ZONE Puck in center players toward center When the puck is deep in the offensive zone our defensemen must cross the blue line If the defense does not cross the line and the puck comes to them outside the blue line they can not shoot it back in or the play will be off-sides In this example the puck is in the middle of the ice. Our defensemen are across the blue line and in the middle of the ice 20

21 DEFENSE in OFFENSIVE ZONE LEFT Puck shifts left players shift left When the puck is on the left side the defensemen shift to the left In this example the puck is on the left side. The left defensemen moves to the boards and right defensemen moves to the center of the ice 21

23 DEFENSE in Transition Left When we lose the puck on left side When the other team gets control of the puck and starts moving it forward the defensemen on the opposite side drops back to center ice This allows the defensemen to provide back-up in case the other team gets by the other defensemen G In this example the other team has control and is moving the puck out on the left side and our right defensemen drops back to center ice to provide back-up support to our left defensemen 23

24 DEFENSE in Transition Right When we lose the puck When the other team gets control of the puck and starts moving it forward the defensemen on the opposite side drops back to center ice This allows the defensemen to provide back-up in case the other team gets by the other defensemen In this example the other team has control and is moving the puck out on the right side and our left defensemen drops back to center ice to provide back-up support to our right defensemen 24

26 Face off s (Center ice) Note defensemen up near face off circle not blue line LW Often the opposing team will push the C puck forward past our center RW With our D on the circle we can get to the puck quicker than the other team 26

27 Face Off In Our Zone Left LW C RW In our defensive zone the center should pull the puck back to our defensemen or shoot it to the boards Backhand if necessary Do not shoot the face off into our danger box Note the positioning of the right defense and right wing. 27

32 BREAKING OUT OF OUR ZONE Moving the puck out of our zone is one of the most important parts of the game If we can master this we are on our way to scoring goals 32

33 Break Out Right side Getting out of our zone When we gain control of the puck deep on the right side in our zone the right wing moves to the LW boards so he can receive a pass from the right defensemen The wing may skate the puck up, C C pass it to the center or left wing Note: The right wing does not go deep into the defensive zone RW 33

35 FORECHECK OFFENSIVE ZONE Taking the puck away from the other team in our offensive zone is critical to scoring goals 35

39 WHEN WE ARE BEING FORECHECKED When the other team shoots the puck into our zone and we are being attacked do not shoot the puck into our danger box The safe play is to shoot it off the boards or change direction of the play by passing the puck behind our net 39

42 MOVEMENT IN OFFENSIVE ZONE When the puck moves across the ice all players need to shift with it. It is important for wings and defensemen to move to the boards because the other team will often try to move the puck out of their zone along the boards With our wings and defensemen along the boards they will intercept the pass In this example the puck is moving from the right to the left side and the players LW LW RW C shift with it RW 42

43 OFFENSIVE ZONE WITH PUCK With control of the puck we try to set-up in a triangle This creates passing options C LW Players should move to open areas to G ready for a pass and shot It is important we have one player in front of the other teams net Once a shot on goal is made all three forwards should crash the net for a rebound RW 43

45 LINE CHANGES HOCKEY IS A GAME OF SHORT BURSTS OF ENERGY AND INTENSITY THE AVERAGE LINE SHIFT FOR A PLAYER IN THE NHL IS ABOUT 40 SECONDS WE WILL STRIVE FOR LINE CHANGES SECONDS IT IS NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE TO AWAIT A WHISTLE TO CHANGE WE MUST CHANGE ON THE FLY IT IS CRITICAL TO MAKE OUR LINE CHANGES ON THE FLY AT THE RIGHT TIMES CHANGING INCORRECTLY CREATES AN ODD MAN SITUATION AGAINST US ESSENTIALLY GIVING THE OTHER TEAM A POWER PLAY WHILE WE CHANGE WHICH IS SOMETHING WE WANT TO AVOID 45

46 LAKER DEFENSE CHANGE ON THE FLY Our defense changes only when the puck is on the other side of center ice We try to change both defensemen together It is important the puck is also traveling in the direction of the offensive zone It is important the players coming off the ice let the new players onto the ice first, then go onto the bench Never change when the puck is in our zone Defense should never change when the offense is changing PUCK DIRECTION 46

47 OFFENSE CHANGE ON THE FLY Our offense changes only when the puck is in the offensive zone or traveling into the offensive zone It is important to let the new players coming off the bench get onto the ice first Do not change when the puck is in our zone unless called off by a coach Do not change when the defense is changing PUCK DIRECTION 47
