Page 2 Open Morning Science Exhibition On Wednesday the 21 st of May our school held an open morning. We were privileged to have two VIP guests. Mr Neale Burgess MP & Mayor Antonella Celi who officiated over our egg drop challenge and presented awards and ribbons to our students. Mayor Celi quickly put on a lab coat and joined in the fun. Our students all wore lab coats and safety glasses for their experiments, just in case we didn t have an egg survivor in the egg Our mission was to make a construction/parachute/ capsule for a raw egg! The egg had to survive a fall from our platform to the hard ground below, without breaking. Students researched the egg drop challenge on the internet then designed their own elaborate constructions. Daniel one of our School Leaders, conducted his official duties of retrieving the egg from the floor, unwrapping it from its packaging (which wasn t always easy) to see if the egg had been broken or survived it s plummet to earth. Mayor Antonella Celi and Daniel then inspected the egg to see if it had splattered or survived. Alex was selected to provide a drum roll prior to every egg drop. He did an outstanding job and was chosen for his drumming expertise. Well done Alex! Whilst Alex was doing his egg drop Jacob and Tyson had a turn on the drums to keep the excitement going.

Page 3 Lesley- Ann a volunteer here at came to see our expo. Her son Ben dropped his egg from a really great height did his egg survive? He used some balloons to cushion the fall for his egg. Great Idea Ben! Skyla thought of using a long bread roll to put around the egg to stop it breaking! Very clever Skyla. and it worked!! Jemma and Cayden s Mother saw Cayden use polystyrene cups and lots of sticky tape to make a protective shell for his egg, and Jemma is making a milk rainbow with lots of colours and some dishwashing liquid!

Page 4 I would like to especially thank Laura Towey for her kind donation of 20 disposable lab coats they were fantastic. Marc Heron from Balcombe College also lent us 20 lab coats for the day. The college is going to do a science display later in the year for us. Thanks also to John Pincott who cut the wood and drilled holes into it for students to hammer and make the herb boxes that were given to the Mayor and Neale Burgess. Who says girls can t hammer! Hayden s mum came to help Room 2 with their experiments. Jarrod s Dad came to see him drop his egg and visited Room 7 where they had a wide range of experiments including invisible writing and make Stone out of bread!

Page 6 Science news from Room 2 In term 2 our class lessons involved visits to the local wetland known as Brim Brim Wetlands which is situated behind the school. Students are recreating the wetlands on the interactive white board and then making a real life Wetland habitat The children are learning about the environment and how to recognise the common features of animals, as well as learning about animal habitats. In class the student s labelled pictures where they identified the features of animals such as ants and echidna s, and the children even made their own ant habitat complete with live ants to study. Colouring and labelling the animals Safely transferring the ants into the habitat and covering them up! As part of Science Week we also visited other classes such as rooms 5 & 7 to see what fun experiments the other students were doing!
