Our Vision: Engaged and self-managing learners who interact positively in our community and have a desire to achieve excellence Newsletter Term 4, Week 5, 2018 E matahi ana e mataara! Principal s message: Dear Parents, caregivers and families What a great effort from our Aquabots teams at the national competition that was held in Nelson on the weekend of November 3rd and 4th. Eleven students represented our school and performed well beyond expectations to gain overall placings of second, fourth and seventh out of the 24 teams competing in the primary and intermediate sections. Our thanks go to Robyn Hamilton for the many hours of preparation that were required to enable our teams to participate in this fantastic event. Our swimming team also achieved some great results to secure second place at the Wellington region Intermediate schools competition that was held at the Naenae Pool on Tuesday, November 14. We are also very proud of those students and staff who were involved in the Writers Camp at Castlepoint, the Chanel Hackathon and the Masterton Athletics events this week. Tino pai rawa atu o koutou mahi! Our Kiwi Quizathon test was held on Thursday, November 15 and we request that all sponsorship money or donations are handed in to the school office before Friday, November 23 please. At our singing assembly on Tuesday, November 13, seven students were able to total more than $1 000 between them which is an outstanding effort. We are optimistic about reaching the target of $ needed to start stage two of the MIS adventure playground. Thank you all once again for your assistance with the Teacher s Strike Day on Friday, November 16. We are very hopeful that the school will be able to remain open for instruction on all available days for the rest of the 2018 school year and beyond. Naku noa atu, Russell Thompson (Tumuaki) Celebrating our success: Action from our Term 4 Options Programme Baseball buffs is a sport about speed, power and thought. There are four or five things to think about. Number 1 is to think and follow where the ball is going. Number 2 is to encourage other people and to help other people too. Number 3 is to stay low in the infield and to stay a little bit higher in the outfield. Number 4 is to stay safe and have fun. Thanks by Thomas Hemi
Yoga and Mindfulness. We were very lucky to get into this option, yoga and mindfulness. We have two lessons so far and we really enjoy it. Yoga keeps our breathing into contact and it involves just letting go of the outside world and all the distractions. Downwards dog, warrior and happy baby are just a few to name. We are really looking forward to the next few sessions. Written by Amy and Montana Room 6 SNORKS with Mr Veale. We were lucky enough to get our first choice for the option Snorks. This option is being held at the Masterton Town Pools and is taken by Mr Veale, Mandy and a snorkelling instructor who teaches us how to use snorkel gear and what to do when diving. For our first lesson, we learnt the basics of diving with snorkels and dolphin-dived the length of the pool. We also use flippers that help us glide through the water easily. Our goal by the end of the course is to play a game of underwater hockey and be confident using snorkels in the water. Lisa Gunn Room 5.
Old School is Cool For the past couple of weeks, I have been in the option Old skool is Kool with Mrs Jaquiery and Ms Geange. We ve had fun learning three Maori games; two are inside games and one is an outside game. My favourite is the outside game Maui Matau because it is a competitive game using big rakau and it teaches you your left and right in Maori. The other two inside games are ones you do with buddies. One involves a song and different actions using small rakau and the other one is a counting hand game. Katie Harris Room 5 MAHI PAI DRAW FOR 5th NOVEMBER, 2018 Thank you to these generous sponsors for our Mahi Pai draw: Congratulations also to these winners on Clareville Bakery Hannah Davies Room 7 Copthorne Park Driving Range Monday 5th November: Zach Lowe Room 8 McDonalds Cory Bracewell Room 8 Pita Pit Tommy Graham Room 3 Masterbowl Cohen Riddell Room 8 Pukaha Mt Bruce Kenya Riwai-Couch Room 8 Lone Star James Allingham Room 3 TECHNICRAFT AWARDS The Technicraft Awards for displaying the A.D.M.I.R.E. values in each of these Specialist Areas were presented in assembly on Monday 5th November Cooking Corban Simpson Room 7 Design Technology Dylan Knight Room 6 Music Reagan Herbert Room 3 Science Stevielea Scott Room 5
The National Science and Technology Roadshow 2018 Recently 30 MIS students attended the Science and Technology Roadshow held at Douglas Park School. We saw two shows. The first was titled, Am I living? It was all about what constitutes life. The second show explored temperature and combustion and was titled Fire and Ice. The themes for the exhibits included Astronomy, Ecology and Environment, Reflection and Refraction, Sound and Spinning and Whizzing. A very sincere thank you to all the parent helpers who assisted during this event. Irene McKinstry Science Teacher Student Voice At the science roadshow, there were so many amazing experiments to check out, including a lot of stuff about science. There were also shows at the start and the end. Which included volunteers. My favourite one was the chair which you got to spin and when you put your arms out you go slow and when you put your arms in you go fast. Logan Dahlberg Room 17 The thing I liked the most about the Science Roadshow was the three mirrors reflecting on each other which made it look like there were heaps of me. Sam Barrell Room 18 I had a great time, I wish I had longer time to do all of the stalls. I really liked the ghostly images stall. When you turned on the light a skeleton came on the chair. I also liked the kaleidoscope item, where there were three mirrors and they all reflected each other, it looked really cool. I really enjoyed the science show. Elle Corlett Room 4 Lily Rees Jacob, Charlie Lennox and Cohen
RANDOM NUMBERS Was the placing of our swimming team at the WRISSA competition held at Naenae Pool this week The number of school days remaining before the end of term four at 3.00 pm on Friday, December 14. dollars raised from the mufti day raising funds to go towards stage 2 of the adventure playground Please note our Strike Day is on Friday the 16 th November. The school will be closed for instruction.
