OYC N e w s l e t t e r COMMODORE JIM S COMMENTS Hello OYC members, Commodore Jim Juhl For the past several days the needle on my thermometer has been on the high side of average, and ohhh what a nice change it is from our long cold winter. As weather warms it s fun to watch the activity on Lake Norman increase. Fishermen and sailors seem to be the most anxious to get back out there and I have to say I m starting to get the itch to finalize the boat projects and splash our boat as well. 2011 is going to be another active year for members of Outrigger Yacht Club. Your officers have been busy planning a full calendar of sailing and social events for your sailing and social enjoyment. Vice Commodore, Sara Butler, and the racing committee have finalized most of the 2011 racing events. And yes, we are planning on another racing event to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The dates should be on the website soon. Many of our racing events are scheduled for the spring and fall, when the winds are best and power boat traffic is least. The West Marine Wednesday Night Series continues to be Lake Norman s most popular keel boat event, and the 18 race schedule will carry us through the summer months. On the social side of the ledger, Rear Commodore, Bill Hartwell, has been busy as well. He found the key to the secret Outrigger recipe files, and in his spare time, Bill dons his apron and chefs hat to test and perfect the OYC fare Continued on page 6 OYC NEWSLETTER JOHN GUTHRIE - EDITOR CHARLOTTE, NC 704-376-7874! 1
OYC NEWSLETTER VICE COMMODORE SARA S REPORT Happy New Year to all, now that we are well into the new year. These last several days of spring like weather has me motivated to clean the bird poop off the deck, dust the cob-webs out of the lazarettes, and pray that my outboard engine, affectionately known as "the squirrel" will run one more year. VICE COMMODORE SARA BUTLER We have the usual spring line-up with some changes to the order of things and some changes to make it not the same ol' race as it was in the past. To start things off, there is the "X ta C" race on April 9th. Rick Rowan is the race chairman, and there might be some changes in the starting sequence so it is not just a race with the clock. April 20th kicks off the first race of the Wednesday Night Series, and then on May 7th is my personal favorite, thetop Gun. Many thanks to our past Commodore, Pete Calame for all of his time and effort into getting the committee boat ship shape and ready for the racing season. Many, many thanks to this years racing committee: Doug Riley, Steve Battel, Neil Liner, Richard Mayberry, Don Corey and Rick Rowan who have volunteered their time and expertise for countless consecutive years to put a great racing calendar together. OYC OYC NEWSLETTER NEWSLETTER REAR COMMODORE BILL S REPORT REAR COMMODORE BILL HARTWELL REPORT FROM THE REAR COMMODORE January 31, 2011 The Chili Cook-off was held on Saturday, January 29, 2011. Everyone had a wonderful time. Weather was just right and we shared some wonderful sailing experiences and terrific chili. The chili cook-off winners were: First Place Roger and Martha Staley; Second Place Sara Butler; and Third Place Don Corey. The voting was narrowly close with just one vote separating each place. Don and Marilynn brought a video of the U-20 North American Championship that everyone enjoyed. The next scheduled social event will be the Frogmore Stew on May 7, 2011. As always, it will be held at the Mariner Villas Clubhouse. In the near future, I will be meeting with Pete Calame and Jim Juhl to plan a special night cruise event for our cruising fleet. I have heard certain of our members reminisce about the fun they had some years ago and I believe we ought to do our best to revive this tradition. SAILING Continued from page 1 Along with our traditional events, Bill is talking about having some on water social activities. Let him know if you have an idea for an event you would like to see on the OYC calendar. Before I go, I d like to thank each of you for your participation in Outrigger yacht Club. Our strength lies in having active members attend our racing and social events. If you haven t marked your calendar with your favorite OYC events, go to the web site and take a minute to note the dates and times of the things you want to enjoy with your fellow club members. Of course, if you have an idea for a race or social event that isn t on the calendar, just let Sara, Bill or me know.
