PRIVATE CLUB MATTERS JANUARY 2013 LET S TALK HANDICAPS Your Handicap Committee in conjunction with the Golf Professional staff is monitoring the handicaps of all of our members. This is particularly important at this time of year as we enter into the heart of our tournament season. One of our main objectives is to maintain the integrity of the handicap system and provide a level playing field for all participants in each tournament, giving everyone a chance to win. We ask your cooperation in making sure you post all scores. We also request that the leader of any member organized groups assign a member of their group to ensure all postings. The golf shop staff will post all Ladies Day and events and all tournaments organized and conducted the Club. We wish to remind you that if you are out of a given hole in a competitive environment that you post a score which in your opinion is the logical number you would have achieved. This will also help with the Expected Pace of Play that was covered in the December newsletter. The Committee will also monitor any consistent winners of all events we classify as tournaments. *See the list at the bottom of this article.* The USGA Handicap Manual recommends that penalties be enforced if this condition exists. All scores from tournaments in the list will be posted as Tournament Scores. We encourage our members to Play it Forward to enhance the enjoyment of the game and again, help with the Expected Pace of Play. However, make sure you post your score accurately for the tees that were used. We should point out that there is a term called Second Adjustment by the USGA for further adjustments in completion where players compete from a different set of tees. We encourage all of our members to contact any member of the Handicap Committee if you are aware of a situation which may impede the integrity of the USGA handicap system. PAGE 3 OF 6 GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH JUST A FEW THINGS RIGHT By Jamie Fordyce, PGA One thing that I often say to my students, is to swing the club properly you only have to do a few things right. Keeping in mind that you want to swing the club in a circle as you swing away from the ball, hence you need to stand in a position that ensures that a circle is the only path you can take the club away. The first thing is to rest the bottom of the club flat on the ground and the shaft facing the target; this is the natural position for the club and if set correctly will start back in the circle we want. Also at your set-up position, hold the club securely in your left hand, relaxed in your right hand with your left arm higher than your right arm at the starting position. The ball needs to be positioned off the left side of your face with all the clubs except the driver, which is off the left instep. The swinging of the club and the turning of your body is controlled completely with your left hand and arm. The speed of your swing is also controlled by your left arm. Relax your shoulders so you can complete your backswing. To maintain your balance as you swing the club, stand taller and closer to the ball than you normally would and bend your knees so your hips stay over your ankles as you swing. Remember that your starting position will determine what kind of swing you will make, any pressure on your right hand during or before the swing will throw your swing off balance causing needless misses. If you focus on these few things you will be able to hit all types of shots and you will be less anxious and more confident over the ball. CULINARY EXPO AND WINE PAIRING Have you ever thought while dining at the club, I wonder how that was made C U L I N A R Y E PO If the answer to that question is yes, then our new Culinary Expos will be the perfect night out for you!
