POOLESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL POMPON TRYOUTS 2011-2012 PHS Pompons are a dedicated group of exceptional academic/athletic students who support and represent Poolesville High School s outstanding reputation. PHS Poms is a very serious commitment. The PHS Pom team begins practice on August 14 th and continues to practice throughout the winter sports season ending in February. Our practice schedule in the fall is Tuesday through Friday: 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. We perform at every home Football Game. We perform at Basketball Games and participate in two MCPS Pom Invitational s and the MCPS Pom Competition in February. Our practice schedule increases as we enter our competition season. ******** POM TRYOUT INFORMATION CLINICS PHS New Gym Tuesday, May 31 3:30 to 5:00 PM Wednesday, June 1 3:30 to 5:00 PM Thursday, June 2 3:30 to 5:00 PM TRYOUTS PHS New Gym Friday, June 3, 2011 3:30 to 6:00 PM Tryouts begin at 4:00 PM.SHARP There are no alternative dates for tryouts no exceptions During Clinics we will review basic Pom techniques, leaps, turns, kicks, jumps, splits and learn a Pom routine that contains pom, dance, hip hop, lyrical, jazz and ripples. Participants must attend all three clinics in order to participate in tryouts! Required Dress for Clinics: White tops, black shorts, white socks and dance shoes. Be on Time or you will not be allowed to participate in the clinic All Cell Phones will be put away Hair must be pulled up in a pony tail short hair out of face Gum Chewing is not permitted Be respectful of your coach and captains or you will be asked to leave You will be issued a number that you will wear everyday
This is a closed clinic and tryout. No one will be permitted to visit or watch you. Attendance is mandatory on the tryout date. You must also attend the entire day of school in order to tryout. No sign-outs will be allowed and we will check. *First cuts will be posted outside the Athletic Office on Thursday, June 2 nd. If your number is posted you are not to attend tryouts. Dear Candidates and Parents, Thank you for your interest in the 2011-2012 Poolesville Falcons Pompon Squad. As a member of the squad, you can show your Falcon pride through performances, exhibitions, competition and community events. The qualifications to become a member of the squad are as follows: Maintain a 2.0 minimum GPA requirement, you must have spirit and enthusiasm, want to be involved, enjoy performing, be ready to work hard, and ready to assume the responsibility of representing PHS! Poms can be a truly rewarding experience, but it is also a large time commitment and can be costly. The squad requires earnest efforts and sincere dedication. Be aware of these facts as you prepare to take on the responsibilities of representing Poolesville High School. If selected to be a PHS Falcon pom, there are many specific responsibilities, obligations, and behavioral expectations that your child must accept in order to qualify for and to remain part of the squad. Parent Responsibilities: The Parent/Guardian permission form must be completed and signed by a Parent/Guardian before the first day of practice Tuesday, May 31st in order to participate.*mcps Form Number (SRS-6), Health Inventory also must be handed in on Tuesday, May 31st Make sure that each form has been filled out completely and correctly. All health and permission forms are available on the PHS Website & outside the Main Office in the Forms Display Case. You also can obtain this form from your Middle School. If your child does not already have a valid physical on file, make an appointment now and have the forms completed. Your child can not participate in clinics or tryouts without a current physical on file. If MCPS Health Forms are not handed on Tuesday, May 31st at the beginning of the clinic you will not be able to participate in the clinics or tryouts. Parent Requirements: If your child makes the pom squad, it is strongly encouraged that one or both parents and the student is required to attend a parent meeting on Sunday, June 5th at 2:00 p.m. (place to be determined). At the meeting we will go over parent and athlete expectations for the season, anticipated schedules, and we will discuss camp. You will also be asked to make a payment towards practice/camp attire and camp.
Team Member Participation Standards, Expectations and Responsibilities: Athlete expectations Our expectations for the girls on this team are very high. They are expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times. They are representatives of the school, the team, and the coaching staff and as such we expect them to behave as young ladies at all times. Violation of these expectations will result in disciplinary action, up to and including suspension and/or removal from the team. Some things to note: *Foul language will not be tolerated. *No excessive PDA s *Smoking, alcohol, drug use are prohibited at all times both on and off campus. *Courtesy to team mates, school staff, and all students is expected at all times. *Notification of any change in contact information MUST be made to the coaching staff immediately. Athlete responsibilities Those chosen are expected to be dedicated to the team. After academics, their team WILL take priority over their other activities. Absences affect the teams ability to progress, and unlike other teams we do not have the luxury of substitutions. Practices and games are mandatory. You will be on time and ready to participate. The only excused absences from practices are for illness that require the athlete to miss school or for school events that result in a grade. You MUST be at the practice immediately before any performance game, exhibition, or competition. If you are not there for ANY reason, you will not perform. Excessive absences or tardiness, regardless of reason, will result in disciplinary action including suspension and up to removal from the team. Summer Camp The pom squad will be attending summer camp. Camp dates are July 10th 13th. Camp will be held at the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus. Parent transportation will be necessary. Camp cost is about $330 payable in increments of $50 and $280. While all athletes are strongly encouraged to attend, summer camp is optional and ability or inability to attend will not affect decisions on squad placement. General Information: Clinic dates for this year are May 31st June 2nd (3 days). Clinics will be held in the schools new gym. At the clinics prospective team members will learn material that will be performed during tryouts. Clinics are closed to spectators. Tryouts will be Friday, June 3rd starting at 3:30 p.m. and going until the last one finishes. You must check in no later than 3:15 p.m. This will be a closed tryout and no one will be permitted in the gym. Thank you for your interest in joining one of the finest Pom programs in the county. We support our Senior Poms during Senior Day and we celebrate Big Sister/LilSister before games! We also participate in Poolesville Day in September and additional Fund Raisers.
DIRECTIONS FOR RETURNING PACKETS Below are the steps to completing a successful Pom application. Check them off as you go. Turn in the COMPLETED packet. ALL paperwork must be received prior to the beginning of the clinic on May 31st, 2010. You cannot participate in the clinics until all paperwork (specifically your physical, parent permission, and insurance information) has been received. 1. Read the entire packet with your parents and sign all forms. 2. Complete the information on the Personal Information Sheet form. Make sure it is signed before handing it in. 3. Read and sign the Student Parent Athletic Participation Contract and Parent Permission Form form. (HINT: It s in the STUDENT ATHLETE HANDBOOK) 4. Turn in a copy of your third quarter report card (current 9th 11th grade students only) 5. All must have a completed physical form. (If you are a current PHS student, currently active in an athletic sport, and have a completed physical form on file, you do not need another physical; however, a copy of your physical must be attached to your packet.) In order to tryout you must attend all days of the Pom clinics. You must also turn in the following form as noted below. Personal Information Sheet due on or before May 25 th. There is a Pom mail box in the main office of Poolesville HS for drop off, or forms may be mailed to the school to the attention of POM COACH. If mailing, please allow sufficient delivery time as all forms must be in school no later than 2 days prior to first clinic.
